IDs have their uses. Most Europeans would consider a voting system that doesn't require IDs to be absurd, I think. However, the issue is that the US isn't some relatively small European country. By introducing compulsory IDs you are risking disenfranchising tons of people. The obvious solution is to have the federal government cover the costs, but since that would be a massive expenditure, it won't happen until the advantages demonstrably outweigh the disadvantages.
Even in the UK, a really fucking tiny country, I can't remember ever needing ID to vote. Not in the General Election, not in Local Elections, not even the EU Referendum. And getting an ID is super easy here as everyone is capable of applying for some kind of free ID. You just rock up to the polling booth with your name and postcode. Job done.
Not to mention that slave labour is still legal as a form of punishment
The beautiful irony here is that the US government has an ironclad prohibition about purchasing anything made with slave labour. Pretty much 100% of the combat helmets used by the US Army are made by domestic convicts for pennies, and it's work or sit in solitary for refusing to work, so that sure sounds like slave labour to me. Modern America is a land of hypocrisy and paradoxes.
