The End is Near: Major File Sharing Sites Begin to Fall

im glad they stopped those evildoers, that'll teach em'
From my impression there's a lot of people with only so-so knowledge about the net, so they don't know Dropbox-like services or how to use your own computer for filehosting, so they rely on these services to share projects with clients or co-workers, despite the ads and captchas and whatnot.
I mean whenever I encounter them I of course show them some alternatives (they usually happily investigate), but I still get the impression there's a lot of people relying on these services for perfectly legal means. I don't know what's the ratio to pirates tho.
Either way I'm sure this will only lead to alternative services of the same concept or an even better one (like a kind of BitTorrent All-In-One client that packages all the tweaks people google up for when they want optimal identity protection and speed). Necessity is the mother of invention and the net is full of capable and creative people united across the globe.
TL;DR
You don't cure this disease by treating its symptoms.
Fuck. You. SOPA. AND. PIPA.
seriously, im infinitely pissed at the FBI and Lamar Smith right now. he started it all, he should go away and never come back.
There goes the Internet my friends, download as much as you can.
We will probably end up in the Dark Ages where we share USBs, CDs and DVDs with content or watch movies together instead of by ourselves in our rooms. Or start spending actual money for once.
2012 has given us a large turn of events on the Internet, MegaUpload was ripped off the Internet, other file-sharing sites are removing their services, and what will happen in the future is unknown, but can be predicted.
I predict that file-hosting sites will no longer exist. We will go back to torrenting stuff, and sharing files not over the Internet, but with actual, physical mediums. This might allow us to talk about the stuff we share a bit more than the usual, "Thanks for uploading/sharing!" comments.
Either way, 2012 is truly, a dark time for the Internet.
Shit people'll buy stuff and be social I'll take my own life now!!

Even though this has nothing to do with PIPA/SOPA, or the government, at all. These sites are going down by their own hands.
You guys sure do love to overreact when your precious are at risk.

There is a website on the Internet
They call Megaupload
And it's been the sharing site of many a pirate
And God I know I'm one
My Government was an asshole
They took Megaupload down
My Government shut down sharing sites
On that ol' Internet
Although people might think it is the end. It actually isn't, there will ALWAYS be ways of sharing on the internet.

Ironically enough, that song was taken off YouTube about a month ago for copyright claims and it had 14,000,000 viewers. (I know your link is a different upload though)

It's the principle.

Not everyone in the world has access to American television and movies.

So I bet you're okay if the government barred the sale and purchase of cars because a few individuals were stealing them?
fucking cunt nuggets!
So I bet you're okay if the government barred the sale and purchase of cars because a few individuals were stealing them?
That makes absolutely no sense. Try again.
So I bet you're okay if the government barred the sale and purchase of cars because a few individuals were stealing them?
That is incomparable to the Mega-Incident, now if it was a car dealer knowingly selling stolen cars, then yes.
That makes absolutely no sense. Try again.
It makes perfect sense. Innocent people are being harmed because a group of people are participating in illegal activities. Megaupload and FileSonic going down, in no way, affects pirates, just like if the sale of cars was illegal, people would still sell and buy them, under the table.
It makes perfect sense.
Cars are not bits of data which can be copied and reproduced perfectly millions of times over.

MegaUpload rewarded people for uploading illegal content. FileSonic and its sister companies are disabling sharing on their own accord.
Try again.
How about we don't base news on rumors? Where's the source any of these sites are being investigated by FBI?

A car retailer selling both legal and stolen cars would be closed down very quickly.
I blame the lack of services. Sure, I can watch TV episodes on my actual TV, on the actual channel, but I can't do it my way. My way is watching it OFFLINE, save Internet, and I can't be on the computer all of the time, so I copy it on my phone and watch it elsewhere.
If such a service existed, and it worked well, people wouldn't torrent as much. A
Also, I don't have WiFi either.
The success of the Itunes store and other online stores, you know places that CHARGE MONEY, proves this is true.
If the corporations in control gave the people what they wanted, the people will pay. The problem is they don't want to give the people what they want, the corporations want complete control.
They want you to have to watch a show on Tuesday night at 8 pm only on your television. Why, when you can just as easily watch it anytime, anywhere? They are too lazy to adapt, that's why. If they only spent one tenth the amount of time and effort developing a new, modern business model that they spend on fighting piracy then this whole thing wouldn't even be a problem. They'd have money rolling in by the truckload.

Taking it too literally.
Megaupload was taken down in accordance to U.S. law violations, yes, but the fact of the matter is the government is still actively trying to combat piracy although the only people they are harming are the innocent people who used the affected filesharing hosts.

Tough shit. If you knowingly upload files to a shady site, you deserve what's coming to you. There's no excuse.
Hopefully torrenting sites will still be around guys? Right?

Hell, look at Hulu.
$8 a month for access to plenty of on-demand shows, plus ad revenue. I can't imagine how much they make a month.
To all you people going "HURR THIS IS THE END OF THE INTERNET AS WE KNOW IT", no it isn't you moron. These sites are temporarily pulling the ability to share files until this whole Megaupload thing has blown over.

I agree, and any file worth uploading should be uploaded to several sites. But still, it's a matter of principle. Megaupload was long due for a takedown and I'm still fine with sites hosting loads of illegal content being taken down, but when it starts affecting the wrong people for the wrong reasons...
I guess the only thing left to do is buy these products legitimately.
All of those poor dead links.
