• The End is Near: Major File Sharing Sites Begin to Fall

Oh well thanks assholes. Because the amerricuh guvermet thinks it's used for piracy exclusively, I lost a crapload of files. And I'm not even IN the US.' And they were important, work and school related files.
Although people might think it is the end. It actually isn't, there will ALWAYS be ways of sharing on the internet.
Fucking this. And they're investigations, not actually shutting down shit.
Dropbox actively flags and suspends accounts which are generating tons of downloads, letting a hundred people download a movie or something off of your dropbox gets you suspended pretty quick. Dropbox is really cool about it though and your public folder is just no longer public. Dropbox is pretty much what you should use if you want to back up your own files, that's what it's for. The problem is that these hosts were all quite naive and didn't realize that being an American company with servers in the USA hosting pirated content is a fucking stupid idea and pretty much is just asking for you to get picked up by the FBI. It was absolutely bound to happen and with them attempting to profit from copywrited material(this is why we have copywrite laws, this actually hurts artists) they were just asking for it. Rapidshare is a Swiss company and would have to be shut down by Switzerland, you people are all overreacting as sites have always been shut down and a case against Megaupload would have taken months or even years to develop so it's not just because SOPA/PIPA/ACTA.

Are federal agencies in the US liable when things like this occur?

We still got dropbox, guys!
I wonder what the legal implications of this are. Surely it has resulted in millions of dollars worth of damage. Are federal agencies in the US liable when things like this occur?
Its covered under seizure of property laws, they're all on servers.
Except that shutting down upload sites can be politically contentious and now might have seemed like an opportune time to take advantage of the situation.
Or Obama might've given the go ahead to show we don't need draconian policies like PIPA and SOPA to stop piracy. Plus the charges aren't all piracy in Megaupload's case. There's other fraud charges.
I guess that that the server I was going to build WON'T be delayed till next year Say, who wants an FP exclusive file sharing site?
Seems like this was on the burner for a while and they decided to whip this out as soon as SOPA and PIPA effectively died, just to go 'Well, we didn't need those stupid laws anyway, we can still take your site down without it and there isn't a thing you can do about it'. Megaupload had it coming though, they made money off of downloads, most of which was copyrighted material.
We might need some "liberation" soon

I dislike the fact that our government thinks it has free reign over the internet.
Dear American government, FUCK YOU! Yours sincerely, Everyone else in the world.
Dear American government, FUCK YOU! Yours sincerely, Everyone in America.
And so begins the era of internet prohibition, courtesy of ACTA. Give it five years and the hypocrisy will be realised and all will return to normal, just like alcohol prohibition. I hope.
And so begins the era of internet prohibition, courtesy of ACTA.
i was wondering what the cultural kickoff point for the 2010's would be, and this seems like a pretty good contender
i was wondering what the cultural kickoff point for the 2010's would be, and this seems like a pretty good contender
Wish it wasn't something as bad as the end of the (free surface) web. [editline]23rd January 2012[/editline] Guess darkweb sites will become the new speakeasies.
yep one warez sharing site was shut down so the entire internet is over totally not overreacting
I guess that that the server I was going to build WON'T be delayed till next year Say, who wants an FP exclusive file sharing site?
punchserv.com :v:
[B], he should go away and never come back.
Why not go all out and just say you want the man dead? Go away where?
I dislike the fact that our government thinks it has free reign over the internet.
It sort of does, ICANN is based in the US, and ICANN controls all the domain names or something to that extent. ICE already forced ICANN to block access to some Chinese counterfeiter's online shop a while ago, what's to say they can't somehow declare ICANN vital to 'national security' and take it over?
If they touch dropbox I will be pissed.

It's important to protect "intellectual" properties, while at the same time try to pass it off as not a removal of personal access to free information.
punchserv.com :v:
I'm being serious, I have all the parts for the server ordered. It was originally going to be a game server, but I can easily throw some on some extra hard drives and host a file sharing site.
Meanwhile the Pirate Bay is still as strong as ever.
Back to floppy disk piracy!
Either way, this destruction of the internet will lead to two things, both being good. 1. It will cause you to go outside. 2. It will cause you to fight your corrupt goverment perhaps?
