they could pull a Microsoft and call it Half-Life 360 then tie the ending with the events that led up to the Black Mesa incident
literally the entire game is based around that so it'd be impossible not to
I just read that it costs 900 euro to apply for a trademark. Sounds like an expensive hoax, if it now is a hoax. I'm actually think it something else to be honest.
They need someway to end the Half-Life 2 Story Arc thats exciting for new and old players that can set the game up for future releases while having fresh gameplay that doesn't have rehashed Half-Life 2 mechanics.
What's wrong with rehashing game mechanics if they work well and don't cause many problems? Valve did that with Half-Life 2, the suit mechanics are directly from Half-Life 1 (granted it's just an upgraded suit). You have medkits and suit batteries lying around, headcrabs jump at your face and you can dodge the attack, vehicle sections, obtusely different gameplay styles towards the end of the game (Xen and the Citadel), trains and many other things. Episode 1 is basically the same as Half-Life 2 in terms of gameplay, it's just that Valve had had a bit more practice by this point with Half-Life 2 and the Source Engine's capabilities, so Episode 1 had a few nicer things in it. Episode 2 introduced a nicer variety of environments, expanded on the Cinder Block balancing puzzle that Valve have a hard-on for with the bridge full of cars. Then there's the Magnusson devices which you have to use in the later part of the game in a bizarre take on a tower defense game. So that leaves Episode 3 to introduce something new, maybe it can showcase a lot of the fancier effects and other fancy gadgets Source 2 has to offer, or maybe it can allow the player to experience snow/ice related combat in the icy Siberian landscapes where the Borealis is. Maybe the gravity gun can pick up snowballs and you can roll them down a hill and run over a squad of combine soldiers as the ball gets bigger and a bigger as it picks up more and more snow. Or maybe you can use the snow balls to have another balancing puzzle on the Borealis that's hanging off a cliff and you have to balance it at one end to stop the ship falling?

They did expand on some earlier gameplay concepts but the newest part, the strider battle, was only a small part at the end. The only other new concept was the loot cache locator which gets boring quickly. You've got to remember that lots of older players have played Half-Life 2 quite a few times. The suit concept is pretty much standard now but that's because it's not really a gameplay defining feature. At this point people expect the new Half-Life to introduce something new and reusing balancing puzzles (which made their way into every other FPS once other people made Physics Engines capable of it) isn't going to satisfy anyone.
Why should it be?

You have no idea what was really going to happen after Episode 2, so why couldn't it be important and large enough to encourage an entirely new game rather than an episode?
Am I making myself clear?
By this point i don't care, i just don't care. HL3 has been flashed in my face too many times and i've run out of hope for it. I'd be happy if Valve released a half arsed, 3 house CoD singleplayer of a game just to be done. The gaming community needs another white whale to endlessly talk about.
I like how rather than discussing why the trademark was removed (or really why it was given in the first place), everyone on this thread has proceeded to bitch about whether it should be called Episode 3 or Half-Life 3.
Yeah it did but it remained the same both leaks while the Half-Life 3 one had 6 employees added and the "Half-Life 3 Core" added the second leak. Doesn't mean it's coming out soon though, just that it's in development.
This. They created a new HL3 related group within the last 4 months.
I'm sure they said they're done with episodes but Episode 3 is still the title for the next Half-Life.
Just to end this debate, it would, should and will be HALF-LIFE 3. Why? "Source Engine 2" That's all. /thread
Just to end this debate, it would, should and will be HALF-LIFE 3. Why? "Source Engine 2" That's all. /thread
That doesnt make any sense whatsoever. [editline]4th October 2013[/editline] Also, they said they were done with and that the episodic MODEL was a failure. That wouldnt effect the naming.
depending on the details of the trademark it could mean they are simply changing the logo or what have you

They're both the same kinda fruit, just shut the fuck up about it.
by the time hl3 comes out I'll be rotting and I'm only 14
It doesn't matter how anal most people are, it matters how anal valve are. [editline]4th October 2013[/editline] Like, why would they have Half Life 3 be the conclusion to Half Life 2? That makes no sense.
what makes you think that half life 3 is going to conclude the story?
Every single pessimistic post about HL3 could have been applied to HL2 in the past years ago because so far both games have taken about 6 years to come out. Really this is just a rehash of the wait for HL2, people are gonna claim that its gonna suck and it will never be good and then BAM! We get a mind blowingly amazing game from valve that everyone that is a HL fan likes at least. And then we wait through another 6 years of pessimism.

Combine, Rebels, Xen creatures, Antlions, Zombies, maybe even bandits like I'm not saying "This will happen" nor does it fit but who the hell knows what they are cooking.
Life is cruel.
the obvious solution to please everyone is to put "2: Episode" in a very tiny font before the 3.

The same will most likely happen to the Portal 3 trademark.
Maybe they want to outdo Duke Nukem Forever. So, uh, at least 8 more years.
That's only possible if you have an OHIM account.
Where does it say that? It just says that IF you already have an account and select bank transfer they won't debit your current account. If you already have an account you can select the last payment method "Current Account with OHIM (CA)". The same thing happened with "Corgis Unleashed" (which was trademarked under Blizzard's name by someone else). No money was exchanged to get it to show up.
Gabe confirmed himself that it's now called Half-Life 3.
I distinctly remember that they said "yeah we're ditching episodic" but they're keeping the title Half Life 2: Episode 3 in order to provide closure on that whole arc. After that they're through with the shit
