I never thought witcher games were my thing, tried 1 for a bit and gave up on it and completely passed 2.
3 however has got me excited to play through both of those
I love the story and characters enough that I'll probably play 1 and 2 for that alone even if i weren't to like the gameplay.
Witcher 1 has the lovely writing and characters, just not a very good... game or combat part. I was fucking addicted for a week or two before W3 released. I want to complete it after W3, and then W2 finally.
I was SEVERELY disappointed when I realized how they dealt with the game difficulty settings
i.e. " lets make everything take more damage, do more damage, and dodge more often "

I'm doing my second playthrough on Death March (the hardest) and it still seems fair. I always know why I died, and how I could have prevented it. That complaint is only valid if it leads to the same fake difficulty battle of attrition stuff that TES is notorious for.
Where's the fun in playing on death march? It is no more satisfying nor challenging because of the blatant sliding scale difficulty.
Nothing gets changed, modified, or added that enhances the gameplay except the most base, artificial elements that make you load the game more often and, quite literally, spend more time hacking a giant HP bar down.
I was just disappointed they fell into the same trap as every other publisher in the last decade.

Playing through lower difficulties meant fights were trivial as soon as I hit level 10ish, because common enemies had about 2 or 3 fast sword swings worth of health.
I love everything about this game, but it's sorely in need of a patch to fix combat AI. Sometimes combat can be really buggy and lame, especially when enemies just stand around and come at you one at a time instead of using their power in numbers to overwhelm you.
I was playing on Blood and Broken Bones difficulty, and it just ruined the rewarding factor when I'd jump into a group of enemies, only for 3 of them to keep circling around or standing idly by (or worse, run into obstacles like trees etc.) whilst one comes at me.

In lower difficulties, all the fights in the game become hack n slash, just mash fast attack to win. With the higher difficulties, you actually have to use decoctions, bombs, signs and potions to survive and you have to learn the individual timings and attack patterns of different types of enemies to effectively fight them. In a sense it forces you to get good at the game instead of mashing mouse one.
I gotta admit the broken AI sometimes is very annoying and can be used to cheese the battles even at Death March, because you can bug the enemies into inactivity by running them to their encounter areas edge.

ah; those first time havel fight memories in dark souls
gargoyles are pretty damn annoying in w3
I like how hard some of the enemies are at higher levels. Blood and broken bones feels like a perfect difficulty
I think wraiths are one of the best designed enemies for fucking your shit up in numbers
This is probably the first series of anything that I've enjoyed every new installment more than the previous. The people who said this game was overhyped were dead wrong.. Even the side quests are interesting. When does that ever happen?

Somehow the game actually blew my expectations away and I watched it from the very beginning when the hype train started in 2013. Really happy CDPR fought for their vision of the game
Never played the original or the second but this game is the fucking bomb, only part of the game I don't enjoy is the that a lupperkin is apparently a flying fetus ghost and not some leprechaun like creature i wanted it to be :(
