Reason why Americans aren't doing as good as other countries is because all the other countries only focus on training their kids to take tests. In places like Singapore and China, there is a shitty to non-existent literature course and there are no extra-curricular activities. According to the economist, a Singapore diplomat said that the only thing their students do well is taking tests. Everywhere else, they fail.
To rephrase that in a way that doesn't have sickening levels of American exceptionalism, it's because the rest of the world treats school as a way to teach kids math, science, biology, and other skills relating to everything while America has been moving more and more to a "push kids out the door with just enough knowledge to get a job" method of schooling

Other nations do better than the US because the US has an abominable education system. You don't have to have a degree to teach, RIGHT AWAY, you can see there's a problem. You don't have to actually know shit you're teaching, just act like you do. Most other countries don't let you do that. Before too long, education is going to be exploited by the market I bet, and it's going to be hailed by right wingers as a god send and feared by everyone else with a braid.
I volunteer for his opponent, Jerry McNerney. According to what I've heard about 1200 more republicans have already voted than democrats. There's no guarantee who they voted for but in general you can probably see where this is going. Democrats better get off their asses if they don't want this guy to win. [editline]21st October 2010[/editline] Even with his extreme views it's amazing how many people support him... :sigh:
Warhol getting argued with by the bigger men on ITN campus is amazing [editline]21st October 2010[/editline] by men i mean just HumanAbyss

Like Literature, the arts, maths, and theatre. Not watered down bullshit like the US has. Europeans pride themselves on education, unlike the Americans. In places like Singapore and China, there is a shitty to non-existent literature course and there are no extra-curricular activities.
uh, what? Not really
According to the economist, a Singapore diplomat said that the only thing their students do well is taking tests. Everywhere else, they fail.
source
From my knowledge, the biggest flaw of the American educational system is that people achieved that learning in school takes actually very little effort, thinking it'd be fine and dandy, everyone hates to learn anyways... Except this way they don't learn shit. A classmate of mine spent 10 months in the USA, where he attended High School. For example, he knew more about geography then the teacher. And by the local standards, he's no extraordinary student.
Obama as expected, didn't do shit about our major problems and it looks like none of the other candidates would get much done either so I'm just going to kind of not give a shit about elections this go around.
Saying Obama did nothing is stupid. You can't change a country in a day, it's like people were expecting Obama to be elected and then wake up the next day to a whole different place where everything is beautiful and everyone is rich and schools work perfectly and all that stuff. Out of Obamas promises, 122 is completed, 236 is in the works, 41 has gotten a compromise, 82 is stalled and 22 is broken. that's five and a half times more completed promises than broken, and if we include the ones that are in the works, it's over 16 times more. Source: http://politifact.com/truth-o-meter/promises/ And regarding communism: As of now it just doesn't work. There's no denying it. It looks wonderful in theory, but as soon as we actually try it out, it fails. And regarding the actual topic: abolishing public school would be incredibly stupid, but what else can you expect from these guys. Public schools in America needs to be improved and needs to be better funded, but abolishing them would only make bad into worse, as poor people wouldn't be able to get in, creating an evil circle (can't get in -> no education -> no job -> no money -> can't get in).
We got Rand Paul, O'Donnell, Palin, and many others held up as the example of the Tea Party's valued conception of "Common Sense". The fact that a lot of people are buying this nonsense is very sad.
Oh look, it's a high profile conservative hating public schools for something other than science curriculum. [editline]22nd October 2010[/editline] That's refreshing.
Every time I hear about a Liberal or Democrat making a comment like this I ask myself how much stupider can they get, and somehow, each time, they manage to top their last comment with this one being the stupidest. But I know sometime soon someone is going to make a comment that makes this one look smart. It just boggles the mind that there are people in this country that think like that. But, somehow they manage to go even further and further to the right.

there is a difference because at least one uses some logic and looks at how the world works, not to say i like democrats but they are a lot better then republicans in using logic

You failed inside your failure. Congrats bro
I'm about to go to the McNerney - Harmer debate, should be interesting.

In places like Europe, people view education as a useful tool. In America, this is what people not from America fail to understand. In the US, everything is about getting a job. Because in the US, homeless people can go through IV league schools and become successful doctors. There is a mindset that no matter how far in a slump you are, you can always climb out of it. What I'm saying is, that education is viewed as a way to get to college. After you breeze through college, you get a job. College here is only viewed as a tool to get a higher paying job than people with only a high school diploma. In most places, people with only high school education can't get very good jobs.

[editline]26th October 2010[/editline] you should go to school to learn, you should enjoy learning. Learning is not a bad thing like so many people seem to think. And with the ridiculous cost of colleges and universities, making it that far is likely to put you more in debt than most people ever get out of. That's another problem. Only found in the states.
Well, in most school systems the majority of kids believe school is a chore.
Well, in most school systems the majority of kids believe school is a chore.
True, but in most school systems they pull something out of it.

American Uni is where people go to sell themselves to wage labour.
