It's impossible for me to even imagine the fury and hatred those people would have felt as the People's Liberation Army murdered thousands of families they should have protected. It would feel like the ultimate betrayal.

To be fair, a large number of PLA soldiers refused to carry the orders to open fire. There has been instances in where the people were trying to protect PLA soldiers that did not shoot but were mobbed by the civilians anyways.
