For fucks sake stop treating him like some romantic hero. He's releasing the secrets of another country. That makes him an asshole, not a hero.
I'm curious - Everyone is saying Assange is doing this to "fight the government" and what not, but has he actually stated so? I've seen everyone claim that's what he's doing, but I've never seen evidence by himself claiming why he's been doing all this.
Anyone got a source with a few quotes by him explaining his reasons and explanations?
I'm not casting doubt on any of it, just curious to what he himself actually says about all this.
The now infamous Wikileaks recently released a cable from Afghanistan revealing U.S. government contractor DynCorp threw a party for Afghan security recruits featuring trafficked boys as the entertainment. Bacha bazi is the Afghan tradition of "boy play" where young boys are dressed up in women's clothing, forced to dance for leering men, and then sold for sex to the highest bidder. Apparently this is the sort of "entertainment" funded by your tax dollars when DynCorp is in charge of security in Afghanistan. DynCorp is a government contractor which has been providing training for Afghan security and police forces for several years. Though the company is about as transparent as a lead-coated rock, most reports claim over 95% of their budget comes from U.S. taxpayers. That's the same budget that DynCorp used to pay for a party in Kunduz Province for some Afghan police trainees. The entertainment for the evening was bacha bazi boys, whose pimps were paid so the boys would sing and dance for the recruits and then be raped by them afterward. That's your tax dollars at work -- fighting terrorism and extremism in Afghnistan by trafficking little boys for sex with cops-in-training.
In fact, the evidence linking DynCorp to bacha bazi was so damning, Afghan Minister of the Interior Hanif Atmar tried to quash the story. Upon hearing a journalist was investigating DynCorp and the U.S. government's funding of the sex trafficking of young boys in Afghanistan, Atmar warned any publication of the story would "endanger lives," and requested the U.S. suppress the story. Atmar admitted he had arrested eleven Afghans nationals as "facilitators" of the bacha bazi party. But he was only charging them with "purchasing a service from a child," which is illegal under Sharia law and the civil code. And in this case "services" is not used as a euphemism for sex; so far, no one is being held accountable for the young boys whose rapes were paid for by the U.S. taxpayers.
As if this story couldn't get any more outrageous, Atmar went on to say that if news of the incident got out, he was "worried about the image of foreign mentors". In other words, why should something as piddling as the humiliation, objectification, sale, and rape of some children tarnish the good name of DynCorp and all the work (read: money) they're doing in Afghanistan? After all, bacha bazi is growing in popularity in Afghanistan, especially in areas like Kunduz. Why shouldn't U.S. government contractors be able to win local favor by pimping young boys?
Of course, this isn't the first time DynCorp has used U.S. tax dollars to support sex trafficking. In Bosnia in 1999, Kathryn Bolkovac was fired from the company after blowing the whistle on DynCorp's staffers pimping out girls as young as 12 from Eastern European countries. DynCorp settled a lawsuit involving Bolkovac, and her story was recently featured in The Whistleblower, where she was portrayed by Rachel Weiss. It's a happy ending for one DynCorp whistle blower, but will there be a Bolkovac in Afghanistan?
It's time American taxpayers demanded a zero tolerance policy on our money being used to support child sex trafficking overseas. Tell the UN Mission to Afghanistan the time has come to crack down on those who buy and sell boys in bacha bazi, whether they're Afghans or U.S. government contractors, security personnel or citizens. No one should be able to traffic children so sex and get away with it, and that includes repeat offender DynCorp. We have a right to demand our tax dollars go to fight trafficking, not support it. And we have a right to demand the U.S. government and their contractors be held accountable for exploiting the boys of Afghanistan.
It would be fair if he released secrets from other countries, such as Russia. But shitting up just NATO is a bit of a douche-move.
I sit on the fence, but I could be persuaded to help the cause.

Holy shit, child traffiking? Does the U.S. Government know what the shit their assocoiates are doing?
For fucks sake stop treating him like some romantic hero. He's releasing the secrets of another country. That makes him an asshole, not a hero.
Subjective shit we're talking here, you dislike him, some people like him, deal with it.

Better question would be - Does the US Government care about what shit their associates are doing?

I saw it on the Daily Show/Colbert Report (can't be assed to find the clip right now) but he said it basically boils down to him being a "combative bastard," or something to that effect.

So... he's just doing it because he can and he's a spiteful person, basically? Not for any grand crusade against government corruption or for opening the world to truths?
I'm kind of disappointed :smith:
I don't know if that's what he actually means, but saying "I'm a combative person who hates bastards" kind of gave me that impression.

He claims under the flag of truth and transparency, even though the knight in shining armor keeps secrets himself and isn't transparent either. That's whats become my biggest issue with him now. If you're going to go on a high horse, make sure you bring all of you with you.
THIS JUST IN: Wikileaks leaks some government documents.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to be charged with spying by the US

Do as the Romans do. God fucking dammit at least get it right.

Every idiom has different variations. He got the point across.

This just in, 2001: A Space Odessy released!
Challenging authority is not terrorism.
Honestly though I'm pretty clouded on the whole situation, although I feel the website attacks are crossing the line.
But this is what people are being taught now it seems.
OP updated, I'll be on every so often to update until about 3AM EST.
Don't charge him with espionage, if you want to destroy a figure head. Destroy his image, muddy it, show the Knight in Mother Fucking Shiney Armor is really just another human being and he'll lose his ability amaze.
[editline]10th December 2010[/editline]
But this is what people are being taught now it seems.
They're not even taught to think for themselves, both sides are like,
Gov't:"Hey, he's a terrorist! Listen to us!"
Wikileaks:"Hey, they're corrupt! Listen to us!"
Anyone with half a brain and the ability to read would know that the leaks, have done nothing, they have not provided anything substantial. They're over-glorified bits of data because the government was taken by surprise and is trying to stop it now. That is why its garnered so much attention. Its fucking Twilight all over again!
I just think it's rather ironic that the US, who has been known for spying on other countries because of these leaks, is being charged for the same thing.

Did you mean that? Otherwise it doesn't really make any sense.

Yeah, Assange is being charged for spying by the US, who is notorious for Spying on everyone else.
Also to the above it's actually almost a week old at this point, and I don't think it really belongs in the OP. If anyone objects I'll be glad to add it without question.

Are you fucking kidding me, IT'S REAL?!
Hoooolyyy sshhiittt.
You're creating a rule for everyone else not to make wikileaks related threads.
If anyone doesn't like this idea. Don't post in here. And continue using other threads. That's stupid. This Megathread OP is a MOUNTAIN of test. Fuck that. There's also information about Julian assange's background not in the MEGATHREAD.
I like this:

If you haven't heard, they're making a Wikileaks spinoff called "Openleaks", but they'll leave the editing and publishing to the professionals.

It was used in 1984 to prosecute a U.S. naval intelligence analyst who was jailed for leaking photos of a Soviet aircraft carrier to Britain’s Jane’s Defence Weekly magazine.
Legal experts in Washington claimed an alternative would be to charge Mr Assange with theft of government property. The law makes it a crime for anyone who receives property known to have been stolen with intent to ‘convert to his own use or gain.’

This thread seems ok for minor stories (as if any can actually be called minor) and for general discussion but for announcing news and then discussing and debating it (which is basically all that happens in and the point of (IMO) ITN) it is useless. No one is going to be able to follow so many discussions going on in the same thread.

I like how we "KNOW" its assange. Assange doesn't comment on the shit he sees. The "anonymous" staff member is just shrowded in secrecy. Have you read about Assange's past life? Atleast we have something to work with.
His past co workers? Hahahah, god knows how Julian's rape case is going to go? It'll turn out that he walks away from that charge. But during the hours spent behind bars, the government is thinking of ways to flawlessly beat him in court.
And watch, the court will win in their favour. And we won't hear about him again-- perhaps only his supporters.
