Why not bolding the actual number ?
Someone doesn't like reading :v:
Aliens need to come here already and give us all the good technology to travel to other planets and have 8 billion songs stored on our iPods. Then it can be like star wars and shit. That's our only hope of being alive during easily accessible space travel.

I'll be on the alien planet while you'll be figuring out how to mute your iPod Nano Super touch screen tablet edition.
Here we go, classical Facepunch "I know most" Scientist debate.
That's pretty awesome. Only a matter of time before we officially make contact.
That's pretty awesome. Only a matter of time before we officially make contact.
i wouldn't be surprised if we made contact a long time ago and they're just not telling us
Yeah, everywhere from less than one to a million year I would say.
That's pretty awesome. Only a matter of time before we officially make contact.
If it's anything like Harvest i think i'll decline.
You can find an interactive version of the equation where you can input all the different values yourself: http://www.activemind.com/Mysterious/Topics/SETI/drake_equation.html My result: 1.1879999 civilizations in the galaxy. (Those are not decimals at the end)
fl is the fraction of planets in ne where life evolves Question: On what percentage of the planets that are capable of sustaining life does life actually evolve? Answer: Current estimates range from 100% (where life can evolve it will) down to close to 0%.
In other words, this "estimate" is just a random number trussed up with a fancy equation
What?
They were talking about the chance of intelligent life occuring. As in the chance of humans occuring was incredibly small.
This just in, we aren't the only planet with intelligent life on, in the infinity-sized space. :downs:
Galaxy =/= universe and how are you even sure the universe is infinite? Some theories suggest otherwise.
Here we go, classical Facepunch "I know most" Scientist debate.
Didn't you know? About 20 top NASA scientists go on Facepunch.
This is pretty late. Drake's Equation is well know, didn't you ever have even basic astronomy?
The flaw with those two scenarios is assuming that at least one of those two events happens easily, when in reality, both are next to impossible. That's not to say that I don't believe life exists outside of earth. Just that several thousand seems like a very high amount in our galaxy. We should probably hope for less, we have no idea what they would be like.
The universe is not infinite.
You best be trolling.
This seems like a very tame, conservative estimate compared to the amount of stars with habitable planets orbiting them.
what is this based on [editline]02:36AM[/editline] if they're using the drake equation than the results are pretty pointless
I don't give a shit about iPod storage space. I'll be on the alien planet while you'll be figuring out how to mute your iPod Nano Super touch screen tablet edition.
I don't either, that's just my way of saying they'll bring technology.
Number of known intelligent species in this galaxy: 0
We're never going to come into contact with it, though.
Way to stay optimistic!
You best be trolling.
It isn't. It just expands infinitely (until the collapse, that is).
Come on, colonizate mars faster, i want those mass relays.
Are you nuts People like you will just bring Saren closer to finding the Conduit.
generic snarky remark
phone home.
Galaxy =/= universe and how are you even sure the universe is infinite? Some theories suggest otherwise.
It's quite sure, the universe is not infinite. It started with big bang and is till then expanding but not infinite. But because of it's huge size, you can make approximations and say "it's infinite" so your equations become easier.
Now they should estimate the number of unintelligent aliens in the galaxy
Now they should estimate the number of unintelligent aliens in the galaxy
earth's population
I can't wait to visit the Krogans.
I can't wait to visit the Krogans.
Sell your testicals to them to make huge profit.
