At some point everybody started calling Smileys "Emoji"
emojis specifically are the pictographs, stuff like :-) arent emojis
emojis are words, just not in the traditional sense, which actually makes this kinda exciting news every time some dictionary announces they're putting in webspeak or whatever I see people on all sites get super pissy about it like "boohoo its not a real word", dictionaries catalogue the evolution of language. As far as I'm concerned, emojis are used often enough to be considered part of our modern language
I don't see anything wrong with the creation of a global pictographic language, and that's why I love unicode.
At some point everybody started calling Smileys "Emoji"
thats because thats what they're actually called according to the consortium
I want to die.
I want to die.
Do what your heart tells you to do 😂😂😂👌👍💯
i still see a bunch of ascii squares tbh
"a picture is worth a thousand words"
Do what your heart tells you to do 😂😂😂👌👍💯
😂😂 :suicide:
i still see a bunch of ascii squares tbh
Do you have KB2729094? If yes then it's an issue with font fallback in Chrome, though I think it should support that. Windows 8 and 10 have native support for coloured fonts, so for me they render as small pictures (where the "app" supports it too).
thats because thats what they're actually called according to the consortium
i am pretty sure that emoji was just the japanese word for emoticon until this set of characters got super popular over there then across the world
Best choice out of all those imo.
I think my only problem with emojis(and by extension anything like 'I'M SCREAMING') is that you're...not actually doing that? At best its a little giggle.
I associate this emoji heavily with the "black Twitter" fad which is something that really needs to be stopped.

To be clear, this is Oxford Dictionaries, not the Oxford English Dictionary. It's a stretch to say that an emoji is a "word", but Oxford Dictionaries focuses a lot on cataloging newer slang. Also, the fact that people on this forum hate on emoji but then go like :downs: :smug:  without realizing the hypocrisy is hilarious. It's the same exact thing.

You know Oxford because a laughing-stock when you see shieeet like this. An emoji is not a word, get it straight!
Word of the Year is an image.
i think it is pretty neat how pictographs have made their way back into our language, that was probably something people weren't expecting 50 years ago [editline]17th November 2015[/editline] emojis and emoticons are a pretty important step in the evolution of our language, and that they're universal means that they're also an important step in global culture
Early in our history, we communicated with hieroglyphics (pictures). Then we went on to written languages with words (and eventually, mail). Then came the telegraph, allowing quick transfer of short messages. Then came the telephone, where we could speak directly with the recipient. Then came email (mail) Then came the cellular phone (an improvement on the phone). After that came text messaging (short, quick messages like the telegraph). And now, emojis, which are basically in the same category as hieroglyphics. We have come full circle, gentlemen.
lumbersexual :v:
Best word I've heard of since "masturdating", which is "when one partakes in an activity usually associated with dating (dinner, movie, etc.), alone".
Oh come on why couldn't we get lumbersexual
I didn't care about the Emoji until I saw what was passed over. Why could we not get 'they' as referring to an individual of a nonspecific gender? I'm an English major and I feel as if they is a perfectly succinct way of referring to a nonspecific person for the dozenth time in an essay. It's perfectly fucking clear who they is, so long as they were the direct object of the previous sentence or group of sentences (or, as often in essays, entire damn paragraph). Writing he/she absolutely murders the flow of a sentence, as does s/he or any such variants. It's fine on a legal document, but it looks horrifically out of place in a 8 page essay which I've spent days crafting to grammatical and implicit perfection.
😓 best emoticon ever. That's right, emoticon, keeping it old school up in this bitch. 😟
