WASD for life :v:
Haptic & Neural interfaces are the way forward.
The PC is far too powerful to be replaced by a simple smartphone. This would never happen. The PC gets more advanced every year. Phones will not be able to keep up.
you do realize phones are mini PCs dont you
There are already concepts for plug-in button addons to some smartphones. They fit around the smartphone and plug into one of the slots, and give you access to more buttons and thumbsticks. There's also one that fits to the top and bottom of the phone, making it look vaguely like a PSP.
I'd rather just own a PSV/3DS. Won't drain my battery, and I'll have dedicated controls and optimized games designed around the hardware.
OH MY GOD MY HANDS ARE EXPLODING FROM HOW HARDCORE THIS IS
Haptic & Neural interfaces are the way forward.
Worth it!
If you get hardware that can run today's games well into a phone size, what makes you think there wouldn't be PC's/consoles running bigger/better versions?
you do realize phones are mini PCs dont you
You do realize Phones are no where near as powerful as a regular PC. Edit Although, Yes they are mini PCs. They are just no where near as powerful enough.
They're saying in the article that you could wind up running the game from your phone, and syncing it to your TV and wireless controllers. Not that you'd use the touchscreen for gaming. I guess they really underestimate the power required to do such a task. Batteries of a phone can't even store enough energy to do something like this, and unless we see hundred-fold jumps in the processing power, energy consumption, and a reduction in heat given off, this will never happen.

My cpu alone is 45C idle. My gpu goes to about 80. That's with air cooling. Imagine phones, shit will melt
Yeah good luck with that. I'll be right here when your phones melt from overheating when trying to run "hardcore games"
That will be the day I get a life then.
I think smartphones will replace consoles, and maybe be able to play something on the level of counter-strike source. All it takes is a dock with two USB and one HDMI connector.
except i use my computer for more than games
I remember reading this exact article in the last magazine I got from them and just laughing at the hilarity of the bullshit. Come on Popular Science, surely you don't believe this bullshit will happen anytime soon?
well if you are like me and own an experia play controls actually built into the phone (obviously) and is actually really fun to play minecraft and gta as you have a controller. This is probably the closest thing we have to what the thread title suggests right now. ------ BUT! things like this will not be replacing my pc any time soon I can assure you that.

Yo guys i got a new alienware gaemin rig with a 160 gee bee hard disk drive, 512mb of ddr RAM, and the latest pentium 4 see pee u at @ 3.5 obviously i overclocked it to 3.9ghz and upped the voltage to 1.37 volts of course my gpu is the Nvidia geforce 6800 GTX PRECISION OC supreme gaeman edition w/ 256mb vram and 16 vector pipelines can my rig run Oblivion the elder scrolls 4? Not to forget hertz audio
Did you guys read the damn article? It said the phone would act as the console, and the controllers and TV or monitor would be separate. It is completely plausible. I can envision phones becoming the one electronic device as center for everything. You guys are seriously basing future predictions, on current ideas and trends.

Unless we will be ok with downgrading from bigger machines with more performance to phones which are weaker. I don't see why someone would trade 360 graphics for a bit more than ps1 graphics. When phones reach 360 performance, next consoles (especially pcs) will be far ahead. I doubt a hardcore gamer will use phones as a console. Maybe casual ones but not hardcore ones.

I think the whole idea behind pc gaming is that if you can play an awesome realistic game on your phone, you can play an even more awesome and realistic one on a desktop computer.
Haven't smartphones progressed exponentially in the past few years? It could be likely they would eventually catch up.
They'll never catch up with whatever the current generation of computers are, for one simple reason- Computers can fit more in them.
Haven't smartphones progressed exponentially in the past few years? It could be likely they would eventually catch up.
You're forgetting that while phone tech does progress, everything else tech also progresses At the time we have phones that can run Max Payne or GTA 3, but at the same time, computers that run Battlefield 3. By the time phones can run Battlefield 3, we'll have computers that can pretty much render a Pixar-like level of graphics in real time, or simulate an entire GTA world where every house is accessible and destructable.
Somebody would have to find a better way to control the games then because that's one of the things that's holding it back.
Android 4.0 already supports some controlers, it's the hardware that is lacking for now. I can imagine something like the ASUS Padfone, like a docking station or maybe just a slit in the TV.
