Smartphones Will Become the Only Device Hardcore Gamers Need

This is fucking stupid. Now, when tablets become more powerful, I can totally see myself using a tablet as my main PC with a bluetooth mouse and keyboard or something. Smart phones, though, are just too small to be practical for gaming.
I'm going to be depressed if smartphones kill off handheld gaming. Because they're kind of shit if you have an attention span longer than ten minutes. And like having good controls.
Let me guess, they think "hardcore gamers" are those who play Temple Run all day?
There will always be games that push hardware limitations. We will never have a handheld that can run it's current generations games at max settings and when it does happen it would allow people to push hardware even further, rendering what was what "high-grade" "standard".
In the future the pc, phone, tv etc will all be one, you'll still have seperate screens for tv, computer etc but your phone will act as the processor and interface with the keyboards, mice, monitors, cameras and other accessories
A lot of current console and PC game genres, like first person shooters, weren't around in the early years of console and PC games. Why? Because the hardware wasn't yet developed enough to allow for those kinds of games. That's why you had things like text adventures and so on back then.
It makes me think that right now mobile phones are in the same situation. Right now people can scoff "My phone will never replace my PC" because mobil phones are in their early stages while PCs are mature devices.
What happens in the next couple of years as mobil phones mature? It could be an entirely new and previously unimagined game genre, or genres, will come into existence. These new game types could become the popular games, taking the place of old styles like first person shooters.
I think most people missed the point of the article.
They're saying that phones will soon be powerful enough to run full 3d, triple AAA title games.
At first I was like fuck no, but then I read the article and it actually sounds pretty awesome.
Having an xbox in your pocket that you pair up to your tv and a controller when you want to play.
I can't see that though. Unless we will be ok with downgrading from bigger machines with more performance to phones which are weaker. I don't see why someone would trade 360 graphics for a bit more than ps1 graphics. When phones reach 360 performance, next consoles (especially pcs) will be far ahead.
I doubt a hardcore gamer will use phones as a console. Maybe casual ones but not hardcore ones.
The best phones can ever hope to do is replace handhelds, and even then, handhelds have the advantage of standardized hardware that, like consoles, can get more usage out of the same parts by being a dedicated gaming platform. Phones have countless different models, all with their own software, hardware, and controls, all of which are replaced by newer models much more frequently than handhelds.

Smartphones will never be "hardcore". The whole point of smartphone games is to keep them quick and easy yet entertaining [sp]for 15 minutes[/sp]. Most smartphone games that you actually need to play for a long time don't do too well.
[SUB][SUB]Also couldn't stop laughing at that title. One of the best titles I've seen in a loooooong time.[/SUB][/SUB]

Yeah, it would be awesome if it were logical and possible.
The PC is far too powerful to be replaced by a simple smartphone. This would never happen. The PC gets more advanced every year. Phones will not be able to keep up.
Never say never.
Never say never.
Seriously thought, chances of happening it are smaller than 0.01%
Honestly, what I gathered from the title was that smart phones will eventually be powerful enough to replace your desktop PC because you won't need something that big. You just connect your phone to a monitor, mouse and keyboard and you're done.
I don't think they're saying you're going to be playing starcraft 2 on a phone real soon or anything.
Yeah no, whoever wrote this article pls die
I think smartphones will replace consoles, and maybe be able to play something on the level of counter-strike source. All it takes is a dock with two USB and one HDMI connector.
The problem is, that a phone will
a) never run the same graphical fidelity as is standard
b) to actually be a viable alternative to a console would have to have a console or PC based control schema bundled with it. Making an app controllolable only with a controller would be senseless unless the controller is included in the box with your target devices.
Both the pc and console do that. Phones on the other hand come bundled with a different, third control schema these days - touch.
And well I think everyone can safely say, that as far as real time game controls go
KB+Mouse>Controller>>>>>Touch
And it's not due to touch based controls being immature or new. It's a limitation of them from a technical standpoint.
The only market smartphones might dominate in the end, is the hand held market. Mostly because most people only want to lug around a single device. So a dedicated hand held gaming console mighthave issues.
nothing will ever replace 2.5d PC RTSs
They say "hardcore gamer" and have the guy carrying a Kinect...

1. No, it's not going to be running modern games. So what? People play CS 1.6 and BF1942, it doesn't take good graphics for a fun game.
2. It's not fucking hard. Phones as it is already have MHL (HDMI over it's microUSB output) and USB OTG (USB input over it's microUSB output). Just have a dongle that supports running out a few USB female plugs for KB+Mouse, and then an HDMI output that you can convert to DVI/VGA. Set the phone on the desk, plug in your keyboard and mouse, plug in a monitor, and now it can be taken to LAN parties without any fuss.
It doesn't take a genius to think of this. Hell, if you really wanted you don't need to do that, you can just run with a bluetooth gamepad (phonejoy, sixaxis, wiimote) and play a metric fuckload of games right now.
I don't believe in touch-based controls for hardcore gaming because instinct depends upon tactile response. I do believe that we are rapidly coming to a point where smartphones can be viable for delivering the computing horsepower to be a gaming platform, and that the capability exists to make controls far better.
I felt like I was reading an article out of Popular Science in the 90's. So much dreaming.
I can agree that downsizing is good. You can minimize a full mainframe down to a single albeit shitty 1U server running linux but that took over 40 years of work and advancement to pull off.
The reason you will NEVER see a phone do the duties of an ATX form factor PC is that the phone requires you to use low power components (CPU, I/O, video, etc.), otherwise your battery dies in ten minutes instead of five hours. Unfortunately you're mad to NOT use low power parts in mobile electronics and we all know what low power means for the most part: Ass performance.
Just look at ANY laptop which is purebred (parts like the CPU and video use specialty low power chipsets) compared to your gaming laptops like the XPS (which use desktop-grade components). You'll see the differences.
Just stick to letting our phones work as controllers and HUD's like they should be.

tl;dr don't be stuck in the past, smartphones are viable as mini-computers with some creativity.

The screens are tiny and desktops will always be more powerful for one simple reason:
let's say that you have a phone. This phone is INSANELY powerful- They've somehow managed to get 1 tb of RAM into it, and they made a processor as powerful as ten current ones that's only the size of a sim card.
Now, take all that technology, and imagine how much MORE of it you'd be able to fit into a fullsize computer..
omni tools.
Hardcore gamer and Angry Birds are two things that do not fit in the same article.
I think that they're confusing "hardcore gamer" with "average console user with a PSN/XBL account."

Yet a full-sized PC will still be more powerful. Whoops.

So it'll magically stop working on PC's?

"Hardcore gamers" are apparently extreme casuals/regulars.
they don't get it do they? A hardcore gamer is going to be wanting the very best system even possible (Compter for raw power, or console for mass popularity). They'd play at home with a big system, something actually power, and they'll play to win, and only to win, and at the highest difficulties because that's what they do. Not play something like Mario kart or angry birds, but something like TF2/Quake/StarCraft.
Wow, thats pretty cool.
even if that does get to play CSS or whatever it'll still be very behind, so I really don't see it replacing anything like the article tries to act like it might. It gives the vibe it is.
Playing Fps's on a smartphone, fuck it.
Playing Fps's with console controls, fuck it.
Together with a healthy trend to better gameplay instead of better graphics I very well can see this becoming a thing.
Together with a healthy trend to better gameplay instead of better graphics I very well can see this becoming a thing.
How about a trend where gameplay, physics, audio and visuals are all good? Why degrade one part of a game to upgrade another? Instead upgrade what needs upgrading. Mobile hardware has unnecessary limits that will only hinder game development.
