companies arent allowed to make profit these days huh
not if ur apple!!!!
I could have sword the earlier editions of the iphone had a much higher cost to manufacture
companies arent allowed to make profit these days huh
There's making profit and then there's ripping people off. They'd turn a healthy profit selling these things for $300/piece without contract.

ok well the fancy GTX 680 or whatever graphics card you use certainly doesn't cost $500 to manufacture
why is it suddenly a bad thing when apple does what every other hardware manufacturer does

people are going to buy these, why turn down the bigger profit margin

It's not ripping people off if people are actually willing to pay the price...
Anyways I don't see a problem with this at all. If people are going to buy it at such a price, why would you bother go any cheaper? If you were in charge of Lamborghini where a Gallardo only cost $10,000 to produce (I'm not sure how much it actually is though), why would you sell it for $20,000 when you could sell it for $200,000 as there are alot of people willing to pay alot for one?

A 150-200% markup because of the logo on the back of the case is not standard practice industry-wide. Yet, Apple does it with literally everything they make. Apple could turn a healthy profit on the iPhone 5 selling it at just $300 per unit, yet they launch the base model at $500, and they do it simply because people will rip themselves off over the logo on the back of the case.
Their computers are the same way, you can build any Mac to the exact same specs for half the price. Buy it from Dell for 75% the price. Same machine, same specs, even the same OS if you go to the trouble of buying OS X. Yet people pay way more than they should because it's got an Apple case.
THAT is why we're annoyed at Apple's pricing. It has nothing to do with them wanting to turn a profit, that's fine that's the whole point of running a business. They just take it a bit too far and most people don't seem to give a damn.
Besides, iPhones are priced the same as every other phone. On contract they go for the same price as all the other flagship phones, and off contract they are expensive as balls just like every other phone.
I would imagine they are probably marked up quite a bit too, but since it's Apple we better call them out for it.
people are going to buy these, why turn down the bigger profit margin
Sell more units at lower price, make more money long-term. Or, sell fewer units at high price, make less money long-term. If Apple were to release the base iPhone 5 for $300 they turn a healthy profit on each unit and they'll move more units than they can produce. They literally won't be able to supply enough. They'll also undercut their competition like hell, the flagship Android phones are also selling for $500 and up, and that undercut will drive many to switch on over.
Valve made more money off L4D2 in two days than they had since it launched when they dropped the price down to just a fiver over a weekend. You don't need a crazy markup to make money, matter of fact it often hurts more than it helps.
this is why i feel like there should be a maximum markup for products
That wouldn't really be fair, they're not forcing anyone to buy it after all. They should be allowed to attempt to make as much profit as possible.

their computers are overpriced I'll give you that but if you think that somehow their phones are overpriced then you need a reality check
The GS3 with no contract is $550. it costs probably around $200 to manufacture. that's close to the base model iPhone 5 in terms of pricing
so if you're annoyed at the iPhone's price then please never buy another smartphone again or else you're a hypocrite
Take end cost, divide by 3, get rough manufacturing cost. I'm fairly sure it applies to the majority of products on the market.
So yeah, 1:3 ratio. Or lower. I doubt there's a lot of things sold for less, unless the manufacturer sells them.

Of course, you made all the parts out of scrap plastics and metals with your bare han..
oh wait.

Nine-hundred fucking dollars.
And before you say something like "Well its a more powerful phone" just remember that its made out of the shittiest plastic South Korea could find.

AT&T has it for $549.99

I could see them maybe gaining more sales by dropping the price. But at the same time, I can see them losing sales. I know people who literally just buy the more expensive products by default, and all these people prefer Apple products over their competitors. Go figure.
this is why i feel like there should be a maximum markup for products
A maximum markup? What the fuck? Just don't buy it if you don't think you're getting a good deal for your money.
I'd like to see how much Android phones like the S3 cost to manufacture before having an opinion on this, I'd imagine it's about the same.
I'd like to see how much Android phones like the S3 cost to manufacture before having an opinion on this, I'd imagine it's about the same.
The closest I could find is the Nexus One BOM price which was $174. Relatively close. Can't find anything on the GNex or the GS2/3
And people are willing to pay for it. It's all part of their marketing anyways. Make something expensive and people will perceive it as being a better product, even if it's not.
That's actually why they price it so high. People think it's a better product.
that's actually a lot more expensive than i thought, i thought they could build them for like 10 bucks each
You're confused. That's how much they pay to the people who built them.
They just take it a bit too far and most people don't seem to give a damn.
now i'm no capitalist scum
but you're annoyed because other people are willing to buy something at a cost you wouldn't?
how about you mind your business seriously

Pretty damn sure graphics cards or any processing equipment requires a highly regulated environment with highly trained workers.
Also because facepunch hivemind reaction towards apple.

What sucks is people who keep ignorantly buying it at such a overly high price, screwing over intelligent people who would legitimately want to buy a iPhone 5, knowing its overpriced, but unable to buy it for a reasonable price.
The intelligent suffer from the ignorant masses.

yuck
since when was intelligent synonymous with being cheap?
am I the only one who finds it interesting that the manufacture cost stated here is the exact price Apple lists on their site?
something seems off

Are you kidding me right now?
What makes something a "legitimate want" for an iPhone? It's a luxury product. It's a toy for adults.
why are you guys so mad about it tho
