I'd love to teach a dolphin to communicate like we did with African Grey parrots... Would be awesome to have "smart" dolphins.
No man we're miles above them do they have a god damned space station?
I actually thought about this, and I have an idea.
Early hominids survived because of their intelligence. We could not outrun a lion. We were large targets due to the fact we stood tall. We were not particularly fast or strong for something our size. About the only thing we had going for us physically was endurance running thanks to sweat. We could, however, sharpen rocks to use as weapons and tools and could out-think predators, going to places they cannot reach and such. Through this, we thrived and spread. Eventually the pool of hominids narrowed down to those most adaptable to the varied climates and challenges of the world, Homo Sapiens. Once we were comfortably seated as the dominant species, we were able to grow in both knowledge and population, eventually reaching what we have today.
Dolphins, on the other hand, were perfectly adapted to their environment through physical means. The knowledge probably only went into whomever could catch the most fish, starving those who were not smart enough (just a guess, and not a good one at that). They have no need to adapt their environment to suit them. It is already perfect. Thus, I'd imagine that they have no clue about any of the technical aspects we excel in (mathematics, problem-solving, etc.). I would bet that nowadays (if they are intelligent to the same level we are) they are philosophical, examining the world and keeping note, but not really using that for anything.
I call it "technical-intelligence" and "philosophical-intelligence." Once again, though, we won't really know until we crack their language.

It's from Futurama.
When dolphins get rights and become citizens, will we have to pay them reparations for all the tuna nets?
We grant them this and they repay us by killing a trainer?

(killer whales are dolphins)
When dolphins get rights and become citizens, will we have to pay them reparations for all the tuna nets?
They would be citizens of the Ocean. I guess Shamu and all their buddies would be Citizens of the US, or whatever country they lived in. What would we pay them in? Best we could do is pardon them.
It's good to see fellow sentients are on their way to gain rights. Hopefully our comrades, scientists, will figure out how to communicate with them soon. It would lead to greater understanding of the universe by human beings.
And hopefully, it'd help shatter ridiculous concepts such as religion.

they're dolphins
Think about this.
The average dolphin is smarter than humans probably were in the stone age, and are likely far more capable at a successful society than some Amazonian and Congolese tribes are.

they're dolphins
That's what they want you to think.
I remember that guide on how to have sex with dolphins, if that's anything to go by then yes.
ah here we go; http://www.sexwork.com/family/dolphins1.html
He's right I have a gif of a dolphin mating with a human.

So? That doesn't matter. What matters is that they are conscious, self-aware beings most likely capable of cognition, forming cultures and other such activities, making them similar to humans. Therefore granting them rights would be the right thing to do.

sentience =/= sapience and meta cognition, buddy.
Sentience is reacting rationally to external stimuli.
Sapience is to act with judgment and philosophy.
Meta Cognition is to understand how and why one thinks.
Dude... Apes are not that smart. Why do you think they rob people and won't look after their kids?
Not to be racist but most minoritys do that too.
sentience =/= sapience and meta cognition, buddy
I'm pretty sure they're all of that.
Not to be racist but most minoritys do that too.
What have you done! Don't start a shitstorm. That's not what this thread is supposed to be about.
I'm pretty sure they're all of that.
I'm pretty sure dolphins aren't meta cognizant.
Metacognition implies philosophy of life and memetic culture. Dolphins are sentient and intelligent, but they are not anywhere close to the level of human metacognition. To understand the very act of understanding is far above anything else.
[editline]06:36PM[/editline]
Additionally, I'm not sure how you expect to grant rights to creatures that have shown no capacity to understand or respect rights. Are you going to put dolphins in jail when they kill other dolphins? Are they going to be running their own jails or do we just put the criminal dolphins in zoos?
What happens if a dolphin assaults a human? Will there be an equal punishment as were a human to assault a dolphin?
I don't think you understand how ridiculous you're making all of this.
Dos anyone in this thread realise dolphins are killing machines? They are the only other thing on this earth that kill for shits and giggles. They aren't friendly, They will kill you.
Yeah dolphins are pricks.
A dolphin killed my father and raped my mother!
Dolphins contain very high levels of mercury, they are poisonous and not safe to eat. Besides that we knew they were smart for years so people should stop killing them.

They have language. And as the article states, they have a culture that they teach to their young. How do we know they don't have philosophy? I think it is rather egocentric to think that because they were classified as an animal that they don't have these things. We cannot understand their language, so how can we (you) make judgments like this?
Fucking
Awesome
I want to talk to them :3:
Dolphins are dolphins, people are people.
