Whales+stilts=Armageddon.
We just can't compete.
The dolphin mega-cities are hid behind Somebody Else's Problem fields.
I understand potential cultural differences, but their culture would seem pretty stagnate if it doesn't facilitate communication and advancement like ours.
And when I say communication I mean our desire to communicate with them. The beady-eyed fuckers.
Well, thanks for the debate, but it appears to have boiled down to silliness.
Fair enough, I'm game:

You're thinking of narwhals

Dolphins are NPCs.
♫ So long, and thanks for all the fish! ♫
♫ So sad that is should come to this. ♫

Tom Hanks is smarter than a dolphin, dumber than a volleyball.
I loved that movie.
Actually I love all Tom Hanks movies.
How long have we known about dolphins?
Dolphins have also been known to kill porpoises for reasons which are not fully understood, as porpoises generally do not share the same diet as dolphins and are therefore not competitors for food supplies.
Dolphin murderers, they need to be brought to justice.
Dos anyone in this thread realise dolphins are killing machines? They are the only other thing on this earth that kill for shits and giggles. They aren't friendly, They will kill you.
I bet we used to do that when we hadn't evolved as much, too.
Was anyone else reminded of that article about the octopus who used a coconut shell as body armour?
I highly approve of this decision.
It's good to see fellow sentients are on their way to gain rights. Hopefully our comrades, scientists, will figure out how to communicate with them soon. It would lead to greater understanding of the universe by human beings.
And hopefully, it'd help shatter ridiculous concepts such as religion.
Although dolphins do not have a language doesn't mean we can create one for them which involves whistles and squeaks. As it dolphins assign names to each other through certain noises such as squeaks.

PETA has nothing to do with dolphins if they are no longer animals by social classification.
PETA has nothing to do with dolphins if they are no longer animals by social classification.
So, your saying that this will save the dolphins from PETA?
Even still, communicating intelligence is not difficult. Either dolphins are keeping secrets or they haven't the capacity to do so. They have been around Humans long enough to pick up on at least a few cultural traits that could facilitate communication, provided they have been paying attention and have the ability to pass this information to the next generation.
Why would they want to communicate with us? They live in a practically utopian society with everything they need. Top of the food chain, and able to kill whatever predator messes with them through teamwork, they don't really have any reason to want to learn.
Besides, your earlier analogy about different human cultures being able to communicate is invalid. All human minds, regardless of language, work the same way, so once you find a comfortable middle ground (pictures, sign language etc) it's fairly easy. But dolphins can't easily draw things, or use sign language that we can understand.
Also it's rather arrogant to simply assume that dolphins must be stupid because they don't have the same thought processes as we do. I'd imagine some dolphins feel the same way about us as well.
Very interesting, this concept. Although I doubt that they're at the human level of sentience yet.

Same with humans, but we keep trying to find aliens and other sentient species.
Sentient species always question their existence and the purpose of life.
And once the dolphins learn how to use the internet, we're totally fucked.
They need arms and dextrous hands first.
And once the dolphins learn how to use the internet, we're totally fucked.
This is a message to all Dolphins on behalf of Humanity:
Fuck you

Maybe dolphins do question their existence, but just don't look for it in the stars? They can hardly build telescopes or rockets. They might wonder if intelligent life exists in the darkest depths of the ocean, where they can't reach because of the pressure.
