Video says lazy programmers are to blame, but if the person who made it knew anything about programming, and how huge of a project a GTA game is, he wouldn't be so quick to throw that comment.
Rockstar have quite a lot less programmers than some other developers who make way less ambitious but somehow buggier games, so I'd say they do pretty well.
Not to mention the arse hardware it was put on, so I wouldn't be surprised if these things are fixed... The car thing especially shouldn't be a problem on the new consoles because they actually have enough processing power to handle more than a crappy instant orientation change for the pathing of cars.
He is spot on when it comes to police AI and chases though. The retarded cop spawning and auto-steering to side when you get bumped are a very lazy job that make it only unfair.

To be fair, the cops spawning ahead of you and trying to ram you has been a thing since GTA3. They also tried to chase you in GTA3 as well, probably better than in any other GTA game. Everything after GTA Vice City, the Cop AI has been useless for chases though. I've been dying for proper police chases since GTA2 but it just looks like it's not something the game designers give a second thought to.
In my experience, the cops in GTAV do try to chase you if you give them a chance, which is the biggest improvement since GTA3 (which was similar).

He makes some good points, but he is a bit of a hypocrit. He complains about the cops having "perfect handling" but also complains that they "don't chase". You can have one or the other, either they have perfect handling and chase you, or they don't and you lose them easily. Even if you had some players in copcars online try to chase another player without the hud, the chase likely wouldn't last long and you'll get away.
The way GTA3 and (apparently) GTAIV does it is the copcars get 'special handling' which includes things like extra top speed and acceleration. That existed in GTA2 and GTA3, where even if you had a copcar they would be able to catch up to you. Afaik it was removed in all other GTA's afterward and it showed, because the cops couldn't chase you worth a damn.
I'm not talking about chasing at all. Chasing is good. What isn't is that if they ram your butt you will be forced to go to side artificially. And the fact that they can catch up to you even if your car is the fastest one in the game. It just feels cheap how these things are handled. Cop AI hasn't been too good in previous games but that is not a reason to keep it bad. And that cop armies spawn even if you're on a dirt track in the middle of nowhere.
It could've been a lot better.

I agree that the forced steering is bullshit, but the part about chasing is the part you're not understanding.
They can either give the cop AI perfect handing to chase (they can go faster than their cars actually do, make stops or turns that aren't actually possible, etc), or you can let them have the car's normal handling but never actually chase because the car's physics + imperfect AI (because life-like AI doesn't exist) just doesn't allow it.
What they should do is let the police AI have perfect handling, but try not so much that it's blatantly obvious. They should be able to make a sharp turn without spinning out, but not turn on a dime at 60mph. They should be able to tail you in a chase, but not outrun the fastest car in the game. Stuff like that.

Use roadblocks and helicopters to stop fast cars instead of going over the speed of light to catch up.

As long as it runs at a resolution and framerate actually from this century I have hopes. I know nothing about GTAV because I don't play consoles anymore and just stayed away from its news, have seen no trailers and no gameplay save gifs of silly physics, because I figured I'd wait and play it the way it was meant to be played instead of having what a lot of people consider a masterpiece limited to ancient hardware standards.
But I have a question for people here, the engine it runs on? I personally hated MP3 but it was a really good port, GTAIV's port was terribad and LA Noire ran at 30fps which is pathetic in this day and age, and I was wondering what engines they all run on and if that can shine any light on how likely it is that the PC version can be made well with effort. If the vertical slice trailers and bullshots as are AAA standards for marketing hold actual hope that the PC version will be substantially improved.
Supposedly working on it for as long as they have definitely sounds good and the hope that it isn't a port but the "next gen" version, as if that term actually means anything concrete for PC which it doesn't, I want to play the game and enjoy it, Rockstar are known for being FAIRLY honest so I wanna give them the benefit of the doubt on this one. I would normally say preordering anything, especially something like this with all it's unknowns is really stupid, but in my position as someone that wants to make a video to report how good/bad the PC version is etc. I am considering it.
LA Noire ran at 30fps which is pathetic
It is not at all. The facial animations were captured at 30fps and are vital to gameplay. You can't just boost something like that to 60.
It is not at all. The facial animations were captured at 30fps and are vital to gameplay. You can't just boost something like that to 60.
Developers have all kinds of excuses why 30fps is ok, but in my opinion it is never ok. I don't see a reason why they couldn't have been captured at 60. Is the technology too advanced, is it too expensive, is it too much of a work load? maybe, I don't know how they were made in the case of that game, but developers really should be focusing on getting things to run at 60 rather than spending time coming up with excuses for 30.
It's entirely possible though that in THAT ONE CASE it's excusable if they were experimenting with imperfect technology they knew could get really cool facial animation better than anything else they had but had to sacrifice to make it work, it's obviously up to them, Let's just hope that particular facial capture tech is improved to work at an actual modern framerate soon.

LA Noire felt like a bit more like an experiment in some regards though because they way they chose to do the faces probably isn't going to be revolutionary or practical. It's impressive, but not impressive like "wow this is going to revolutionize games," it was just cool and uncanny and sort of a one-off thing.
The tech they were using with aniamted textures and 30 fps point clouds and shit probably isn't going to be practical for most games when compared to simply mocapping somebodies face using bones, weights and tracking points.
They could have done 60 fps but the file size and production costs of having 60fps point clouds and dynamic textures probably prohibited them from doing so.
They don't support mods, but they don't try to make it hard at all. I like their system of coding things, they make their code as modular as possible, and then they leave it open because why not. So that's why they encrypted the EFLC data files? To make it 'easy' to mod?
Ever since Hot Coffee came out for SA R* has had a massive raging boner for making modder's lives as difficult as possible.
That guys ranting aside, cop cars lurching foward to hit you, cops knowing where you are when they shouldnt, and the lack of fat cops are just anti fun
I never had a problem with the cops or getting away from them. it's shockingly easy if you're on the run in a fast car.
hide under bridges, go through alleys, drive off cliffs, get out of the car and hide in places they can't see off the road, the AI is pretty exploitable.
Hopefully, they could fix up the police so you see cops on patrol either by foot or by car. And maybe just nerf their and regular enemy accuracy by so much that they aren't so "cheap". This is more of a GTA Online problem, from my experience anyway.
Now would be a good time to actually add the Sixth wanted level to bring in the army, for when you've really pissed people off.
Oh, and Crouching. The lack of Crouching just bugs the hell out of me. It would be more useful than that sneak walk they added which only changed your stance a bit.
Wait, the sixth wanted level doesn't trigger the army in this one? What?

I remember the cops being a fucking pain in the ass on gta vice city due to the spikes but the spawning in front of you thing has been there from the beginning however it was less obvious in the previous iterations.
There's a reason why people complain about the vehicle related issues. The police has been dumbed down so much honestly its cheap.
One thing that annoys me is if you stand by people for long enough they fucking call the the cops on you.

I thought my friend was exaggerating this problem. That is until I watched him playing, and someone called the cops on him as he walked by their house. He was on the road, the guy on the porch called the cops and sicked his dog on Trevor. What the hell game?
I only tried this with Trevor, but i'm pretty sure it happens with Micheal and Frank too.

because of the facial animation?
As much as I found it awesome the detail we got in faces with that game, I still feel like it wasn't as good as it should have been

There are only five wanted levels in GTA V, and the army appears in none of them. Unless you go the army base, but that's only a localized response
If it will actually have the graphical improvements like the trailer kind-of shows It'd be awesome to play on the PC

Hope there's a "more realistic police" mod for PC, where tanks will arrive at 6 stars.
To me, the wanted system feels unfinished; why did they stop at 5 stars and not bother to add army stuff on 6?

People were able to mod the Console GTA5s pretty easily shortly after launch.
And GTA4s files were not encrypted, they just had a different storage system then previous games.

Maybe the performance really suffered when they tried it due to console peasantry?
Maybe the performance really suffered when they tried it due to console peasantry?
Makes no sense. How could it suffer if they replaced cops with armymen and cars with tanks?
I hope the video editor from GTA IV comes back.
