ITT Tech shuts down all its schools; students might get loans forgiven
In case there is anyone here not familiar with ITT Tech, you can find loads of horror stories about the "education" they offered here.
looks like they made this with their ITT web design degree
If you're interested in game devving, you also don't need to go to a specific school for it, you can also get a comp sci, art, etc. degree from any decent university and then make your way into the field.
Much less risky too.
I'm not specifically interested in game design but I'm going to community college to transfer to a state university (not 100% sure about where, I'll begin looking as they visit my school), saves a dickload of money. My mate paid 20k (he has to live there) for his first semester at a university, and I pay about 1500 or so including books.
[sp] also the ITT tech commercials are ones I remember from before I stopped watching TV, they're fucking everywhere. By the way, if a school adverts itself often, it's a bad sign. [/sp]
Forgive my ignorance but aren't all Universities in the US "for profit"? So I'm not sure what the difference is here. Do they receive no financial aid from the government or what is the difference exactly?
They are universities that were started and currently operated by government organizations. They are subsidized by the state government so they are usually less expensive to attend.

one exception though, there are companies who hire almost exclusively from one or two schools, at a job i just interviewed for 3 out of the 5 people i would be working with graduated from my school, half the executives were from my school and most of their researchers were as well as one of my old professors
Yeah, networking nowadays is vital. LinkedIn is practically required for job searching.
It helps if you have professors who network well and can give you a leg up in competition versus other schools.
This is hearsay but if you manage to get on really good terms with the superiors and possibly the interviewer of the company you're staging and learn extra tidbits of their criteria, interviewing becomes only a formality.
There was a school called "The Bradford School" that the recruiters shoved down our throats in junior and senior year of high school, I wonder if that will be closed down too.
The Bradford School visited our highschool a ton as well, and a lot of the students bought into it.

I never did, me and my friend discussed it a while ago and it's just a big scam. I don't get why for-profit schools even exist.

Quite simple: profit. There's a lot of cash to be had in higher education considering how student loans get handed out like candy.
The number of people in this thread attending/defending for-profit unis is kind of depressing. No accreditation = no bueno, it's not that difficult.

During elementary school (Or whatever the ninth grade is called) a for profit high school showed up to our school (All schools are free for students but they are still for profit somehow) and the only things they said were "The teachers are really nice and each week we have an iPod raffle". I shit you not.
Just try to find a non profit college in America.
Go ahead. I'll wait.

when people say "for profit university" what they really mean is "these credits are only good here"
if your credits don't transfer anywhere else, run away

Basically, every single state college is non profit. Some private colleges are non profit as well. Look at the list of colleges and universities in California, for example.
Unless you mean something else by non profit.

You mean like all the public state colleges?
The only reason I went to a for profit college was because due to my Aspergers I didn't have the living skills to go to Digipen like I wanted. I don't know whether I'm boned or not, I'm hoping that my portfolio and recommendation letters from my teachers will be enough to get a job since I'm probably in the top 3% or so of programming students at this school from what I've seen.

Digipen? making games?
trust me, nobody cares about your school... just your portfolio and some luck are needed.
A school like digipen -- if you're able to and can afford to go to it it looks great and you're more likely to get a job out of college with it due to the career fairs and whatnot. Otherwise, its not that big of a deal because if you get that very expensive piece of paper called a diploma you might have to wait longer but you'll still probably get what you want given enough time.
I feel like you have to be kind of dumb and naive to seriously get suckered in to one of these "schools".
All you need to know is simply is this place accredited? No.
Uncovering the scam is barely surface level, I feel bad for some 18 year old kid who goes gung ho into a garbage place like this.
On a grander scale it's even more scummy that places like this are even allowed to operate. But I guess when it comes down to it don't be a sucker.
I regret looking into Lincoln Tech a while back, someone I know went somewhere else when he determined Lincoln was shady and when I looked into it myself they started blowing up my phone every other week. I tell them I'm no longer interested but they keep calling my phone in some lame attempt to enroll me through annoyance.
After hearing stories like this I am so glad that I wasn't suckered into Devry or similar schools and went to the local community collage instead.
This whole Digipen thing is the first I'm ever even hearing about it. What is it?
I know it's mainly because of greedy assholes, but why can't we have a program in the West like Norway or whoever has it does?
And by that I mean education is free, there's no student dept or anything like that because they want to have productive, functional people contributing to their society, as opposed to enslaving their youth to payment plans and all that.

Because it's not in the best interest of politicians to have well educated voters who see through their BS. If people are too stupid to vote in their own interest, they have permanent job security.
And what becomes of a nation when it is composed entirely of people working against their best interests?
Rod Serling said it more eloquently than I can.

Thankfully Canada isn't as terrible as the US seems to be education cost wise. And isn't as fraudulent. Reading myittexperience.com really makes me angry and confused how such a scummy company can exist, and for so damn long too!
