On the other hand maybe aliens DO have multi-gorillaian watt broadcasters?
They are alien after all :v:
You miss the magic in the film.. of a daughter who transforms her childhood love of the stars into a diminishing career that turns out to be more than anyone could have dreamed of..
Plot summaries are one thing, but seeing the raw emotions as this epic story progresses is something else.
Imagine only reading the summary of 2001: A Space Odyssey.. You'd completely forgo the beautiful alignment of cinematography, music, and art of Kubrick.
Is it bad I basically did this with 2001 as well and haven't seen that film either?
... let's just say that I used to spoil basically everything for myself when I was younger because I thought I'd never see it due to it being too old.

You also get to hear my favorite line from the movie that I use constantly and no one has recognized the reference.
"First rule in government spending, why build one when you could have two for twice the price?"

Headcanon for a megastructure communication device.
Take a small pulsar say (PSR-B1919-21)) that's ~2km in diameter with a 1.337second pulse period. Build an "aperture" structure in orbit around the pulsar that's matched with the puslar's beam. (For a 1.337sec orbital period, the orbital radius would be ~2*10^3km).
The aperature would have to be 4.7Mm in diameter at that distance (assuming a 50° beam angle of the pulsar).
Whenever the pulsar is directed back at Earth you either close or open the aperture structure to encode data.
0.74 bits per second datastream.

wait hold the fucking phone it actually has a 1.337s period what he fuck
wait hold the fucking phone it actually has a 1.337s period what he fuck
Millisecond pulsars are a thing too with periods of 1 - 10mSec.
However you couldn't do the "Aperture" megastructure idea with these as the orbital radius would be inside the pulsar.
And then in a decade we find out it's just two rocks of unknown supermaterial banging into each other, the space equivalent of marbles.
this is almost certainly not aliens and if it were aliens, they would have sent out the radio signals 3 billion years ago. Whatever's there is probably dead
And if it was aliens, they'd have gone beyond mere physical bodies into something stored in the alien internet and beyond that into beings of pure energy and then integrated with the fifth dimensional fabric of spacetime and are probably wondering what all the fuss is about.
