They aren't confirming anything about the suspect's descent, it's not yet confirmed that he was of Middle Eastern ancestry.
Not confirmed, but huge numbers of news outlets are saying that he is.
Shooter identified as Omar Mateen Several news outlets have identified the gunman as Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old from Fort Pierce Florida. The Washington Post said his identity was confirmed by relatives and law enforcement officials, though Orlando police have not issued an official statement confirming the identity of the suspect. The shooter was killed during a shootout with police, as they broke into the night club to rescue 30 people held hostage there. No motive for the attack has been offered by police. The Guardian has not been able to independently verify the identity of the shooter.

The New York Republican congressman Peter King, a member of the House homeland security committee and chairman of the sub-committee on counterterrorism and intelligence, has told CNN his sources have told him Omar Mateen, the suspect in the Orlando shooting who has been named by media outlets using anonymous sources, was “from Afghanistan and we believe he is trained in the use of weapons”. This contradicts other reports, that the suspect’s family is from Afghanistan but he was born in America. The Guardian has not yet been able to confirm the identity of the suspect. Asked if the suspect may have been affiliated with the Taliban or might have worked with US forces in Afghanistan, King said: “I really don’t want to go any further than that.”
It is overwhelmingly likely I think that he is a Muslim and of Middle-Eastern descent. The real question is whether he was acting as part of a cell or as a lone wolf, and whether he was trained or not.
Believe me,if ISIS goes through with their possible attack during the Euros in France then this will only lead to further radical right wing support in the world
This might not be the worst mass shooting in U.S history. But it's definitely the highest of the decade. This is fucking horrible.
With the current death count is the worst mass shooting in US history, second being Virginia Tech
With the current death count is the worst mass shooting in US history, second being Virginia Tech
Holy fuck it actually is?
Yeah CBS just reported the same thing. Although, I'd still be careful until official confirmation via the FBI.
32 were killed in Virginia Tech, which is the highest.
Oh wow, for some reason I assumed there would exist someone in american history that surpassed Breivik, but I suppose I was mistaken.
Seems like 2016 will be a shit year. Even shittier than last year.
Seems like 2016 will be a shit year. Even shittier than last year.
Oh please... we experienced far more worst. Where were you in 2015?
Oh wow, for some reason I assumed there would exist someone in american history that surpassed Breivik, but I suppose I was mistaken.
I believe the worst ever was in South Korea. A soldier went crazy, stole a bunch of weapons from the armory and killed I think 50 people
The father claimed his son spotted men kissing and was extremely angry about it while the father wasn't.
Oh please... we experienced far more worst. Where were you in 2015?
This guy just made the worst mass shooting in US history, I don't think anything from 2015 could top this, at least not in the first world
This guy just made the worst mass shooting in US history, I don't think anything from 2015 could top this, at least not in the first world
I don't really think it needs to be a competition tbh
32 were killed in Virginia Tech, which is the highest.
No the highest was 45 in 1927 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bath_School_disaster [editline]12th June 2016[/editline] The previous worst
I don't really think it needs to be a competition tbh
It doesn't and it isn't
I believe the worst ever was in South Korea. A soldier went crazy, stole a bunch of weapons from the armory and killed I think 50 people
Breivik killed 75
It's so weird hearing about this being from home. This shit never happens in FL
Such terrible news to wake up to.
Clubs are already well-known hot-spots for criminal activity and terrorism so it isn't really a "loophole" or anything like that. Their door security (entrance) should have prevented this.
Assuming he didn't walk up to the bouncer, shoot him in the face and walk on in.
This guy just made the worst mass shooting in US history, I don't think anything from 2015 could top this, at least not in the first world
In the US yes but in the west no.
I think so, yeah. Wasn't the previous "record" death toll at a mass shooting event the Virginia Tech shooting?
Yeah, VT followed by Sandy Hook I think.
This might not be the worst mass shooting in U.S history.
Without any doubt, this is the worst mass shooting in US history.
But it's definitely the highest of the decade. This is fucking horrible.
Paris? Utoya?
Without any doubt, this is the worst mass shooting in US history. Paris? Utoya?
Pretty sure he still meant in the US
The father claimed his son spotted men kissing and was extremely angry about it while the father wasn't.
Source? While I think everyone suspects strongly that this is a religiously motivated hate crime we would like some hard proof.
Pretty sure he still meant in the US
Yep, I meant U.S in that post.
I don't really think it needs to be a competition tbh
Yeah on the news a reporter asked "Is this one of the top 5 shootings in the US?" and I was like, that might not be the best phrasing for that.
I can't believe I missed this until about 20 minutes ago.
Source? While I think everyone suspects strongly that this is a religiously motivated hate crime we would like some hard proof.
Msnbc right now are saying it on live television. But the father keeps denying religious ties.
It amazes me that there are souls in this world as fundamentally repulsive and ugly as this man's.
Gee, what a horrible disaster. Not believing any "mights" or "likely" until it is 100% confirmed though.
