• German MPs warn losing Britain will be "disastrous" for Europe's economy
The commission alone has the legislative initiative in the EU. The commissioners each represent one member state, but they are all required to work in the interest of the EU. The commissioners are NOT elected by the member states, which is one of many examples of the EU being as democratic as the Soviet Union. And no, the EU parliament does not represent the member states even if they're elected in there. In 2009 the voter turnout was just 43,24%, which suits the Commission just fine. You can't blame the people of the EU that they don't participate in the elections, news media hardly covers it and the whole system is far from transparent. They basically don't know what they're voting for. Also the only time countries like the UK and Denmark have voted to join the EU was back when it was called EC. At that time it was not clear what they could expect, and many politicians claimed it would never become a federation. Now, 40 years later things certainly have changed: The EU has turned into just that. It's about time countries get to vote whether they want to become a part of a federation or not.
True. Unfortunately, this system was designed by the member states themselves. After all, it was the national governments that come together, negotiate, and signs the EU treaties which outlines the design of it. Without a proper democratic government that has any meaningful power, it will always the lack of legitimacy and attention from the public, which explains the low voter turnout. This suits the member states just fine.. until now. It's either to roll-back or to federalise. This half-arse status quo won't work any more.
What worries me that people like Germany and the US are more concerned that the UK leaving the EU will hurt them either economically or diplomatically. They have a right to have their best interests at heart, but so does the UK. I don't think that the UK should stay on behalf of making others' lives more convenient, rather it should stay or leave based on their subjects' best interests.
I am not racist
Yeah you are.
Because of the EU we let in thousands of immigrants (mostly illegal) each year. Which means that there are less homes and jobs for people in England. And the UK Border Force just doesn't evict them from the Country. Which means that English people become the minority in their own country. This is happening, there is proof, the fact that London now has more foreign people than English. I am not racist, but, It's England. Not, every-other-country-land. The government can hardly support English people, let alone everyone else. Leaving the EU will be the best thing that ever happeneds. And joining it was the worst idea anyone could ever make.
London has more citizens born in other countries than in England?
Yes, I am sorry I will not be able to find the source. I read it in the news paper.
Was it the Daily Mail?
Yes, I am sorry I will not be able to find the source. I read it in the news paper.
Why do I have a feeling it was the Daily Mail?
Yes, I am sorry I will not be able to find the source. I read it in the news paper.
If it's the daily mail, don't bother looking for it. EDIT: YOU COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS
Got it, read away: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2246288/Census-2011-UK-immigrant-population-jumps-THREE-MILLION-10-years.html
Holy fuck it was.
If it's the daily mail, don't bother looking for it.
Its a government census.
LESS THAN 90% WHITE? UTTER SHOCK UTTER HORROR
Minorities in England? May as well take off the Queens head and dissolve the country, all hope is lost.
Its a government census.
With facts being spun by the media, as always. "White british" could mean a lot of things. If they decide that you need to be white and born as a Brit, it effectively takes away all legal immigrants from the EU and outside and all the people who are born in Britain but have a darker skin. That's a lot of people.
The basic premise in the UK should be, ALWAYS DISTRUST YOUR NEWSPAPERS! Look into the issues yourself, instead of being swayed by popular opinion, written by some smug who doesn't have anything related to a basic knowledge of government function i.e. Daily Mail.
Whats more important: Look after people from other countries or looking after our own Navy, Army and RAF?
So immigrants can never be British people? What about their children? Are they still from other countries because their specific tribal ancestors never crossed to England?
White British means one thing. You have 'white' colored skin, and you're born in England. Not Scotland, Wales or Ireland.
I see.
I see.
Wow how did I miss that? That's some intense nationalism and xenophobia.
Yes, obviously. Because to be British, you have to be born in Britain.
No that's not how it works at all. If I moved to Australia tomorrow and eventually got sole citizenship in Australia, I would Australian. That's how national identities work.
Why is every uk citizen can't wait to leave the EU and be subject soley to an "uncodified constitution" aka what ever the fuck parliament wants?
London has more citizens born in other countries than in England?
Latest census shows that "White British" is no longer the dominant "race" in London. However, most of the other make up are 3rd/4th gen immigrants or people who don't class themselves as "White British" (the Irish, Welsh, people who don't like the term British etc). Its people reading stats as they want to. [editline]11th January 2013[/editline]
With facts being spun by the media, as always. "White british" could mean a lot of things. [editline]11th January 2013[/editline] In this case, the Daily Mail (and many other tabloids) are abusing the stats. [editline]11th January 2013[/editline]
And I am certainly not racist, but, the government actually grants asylum to thousands of illegal immigrants that shouldn't even be here and just take a lot of money to be looked after. People from foreign country's that work and provide for the country, should be allowed to live and work here like anyone else. Like Australia and New Zealand, you should not be allowed to enter the country unless you bring something to it; Work, Business, ETC. [editline]11th January 2013[/editline] Yes, obviously. Because to be British, you have to be born in Britain.
Tip of the day: NEVER EVER EVER EVER start a sentence with "Im not racist but.." It might be an issue of semantics but if you grant someone asylum they are not an illegal immigrant. If they are seeking asylum they cannot be an illegal immigrant either as they are in the process of determining their immigration status. Also do you really want to be compared to Australila, a country infamous for being xenophobic.
You are a very wise and well informed person. With what seems like a good base of general knowledge, I like that. But, with the whole Asylum thing, I just think its bad because they take illegal immigrants in this country who shouldn't be here and they then fight for asylum and win. Making them legal. They are illegal, they broke the rules and should be deported immediately. Also, I didn't know Australia was xenophobic, but, I like how they're so strict with border protection and only grant you access to stay if your going to benefit there country. It's how it should be.
Well said! What most people forget about illegal immigrants is the ILLEGAL part of the phrase. Someone in one of these threads said that high immigration rates was a compliment of how awesome your country is. That is like if someone comes over to your house and says "Wow, what a great house!" and then moves in without your consent, takes from your refrigerator without contributing to the grocery bill, invites his family to come on in, and then cries foul when you say you can't afford nice things anymore.
