Deploying the Army could easily result in disaster, you'd only need one rioter to fire at them or even some of the more organised agitators to don combats and fire into a crowd.
I don't think you understand the situation in the UK with guns. Hardly anyone has one, never mind uses them. Plus, these are just kids rioting.
Maybe the police should offer some sort of amnesty, 48 hours to return anything you stole before they start mass arresting.
It's because some guy got shot by the police, now people are freaking out and causing havoc.
People are being too pessimistic, I think nearly 3x the number of police should be enough
There's not much stopping other thugs travelling to London from around the UK to get involved.
The army are trained in non-lethal crowd control, as when they'e deployed to N.Ireland/Afghanistan/Iraq etc, they're massively outnumbered on the ground by civilians.
Obviously sending them in with guns is out of the question and will never happen. The question is simply what you arm them with if you do send them in. I don't think London really has thousands more riot weapons just lying around.
The rioters don't have guns, at least not 99.9% of them
A squaddie getting set on fire then.
It's also fairly simple to obtain guns in the UK, just not handguns. Yeh the kids arn't going to be the ones doing any shooting, but somebody who really wanted to cause change? (for the worse) This is the best chance they've had in ages.

APC with a big water cannon on top.

Not guns with live bullets, possibly rubber bullets, tear gas and water-cannons will put them in order.

Unlikely, anyway we are all assuming, and I think we are justified in doing so, that if the army was deployed the rioters' numbers would thin out to about 12

If I was a rioter who's just there for the fun of it, like most are, not really wanting to go head-to-head in combat. I'd be on my way home when the army rolled up with APCs, tear gas and other methods.
1337: Liberal Democrat deputy leader Simon Hughes welcomes the increase in the number of police on London's streets, saying there clearly weren't enough officers last night.
Speaking on the the BBC News Channel, he adds that "youth clubs should not be closing down" and "community sports clubs should be staying open, not closing" in order to help prevent trouble.
Lol.

Just give them a baton and a shield, the change in uniform from police to armed forces will be enough to scare people.
When will people realise we aren't allowed to use tear gas in the UK.
Just give them a baton and a shield, the change in uniform from police to armed forces will be enough to scare people.
If there were hundreds of batons/shields spare in London, then more police would be using them and fewer would simply be in uniform.. fact is London doesn't have more riot gear than they are using. Riots on this scale on such a wide scale just aren't expected.
An Army presence would definitely help the situation, not only for appearance like you said but for numbers too.
Surely where a rioter is seen using force with a weapon it isn't unreasonable to use non-lethal force such as tear gas or rubber bullets?
if it's anything like northern ireland, no it won't
When will people realise we aren't allowed to use tear gas in the UK.
police are issued CS gas by default aren't they
When will people realise we aren't allowed to use tear gas in the UK.
We are.

OI! Leave Iceland out of this. Atleast we were peacefullish.
if it's anything like northern ireland, no it won't
I wish people would stop saying this. It isn't.
When will people realise we aren't allowed to use tear gas in the UK.
They can use CS spray, but that's just like one of those pepper spray launchers. It is still tear gas nonetheless.
Wait wait we are? I thought we discussed earlier about how they weren't allowed to be used. Oh wait it was flash bangs that we aren't allowed to use right?
May be late but http://m.flickr.com/#/photos/pixel-eight/6024429000/
A couple making tea for the police protecting their street
I wish people would stop saying this. It isn't.
not saying it actually is, just pointing out that "SEND IN THE ARMY" isn't a fail-safe solution to any civil conflict
I don't think tear gas is useful against a large volume of people, from the videos it's not looking like the close combat clashes at previous protests, it's more people running towards the police, lobbing a brick or two, then running back.
might move to London and start the revolution early..
Fucking hell.

Regardless, what is or isn't "allowed" is always subject to change, usually based on responses to certain situations.
I don't think it matters that much. The extra police should be sufficient. I think it probably peaked last night. Although don't quote me on that.

For posterity.
Is it just me or is the difference between the riot police and the regular police shocking? Not in terms of equipment, that's a given but the small shield guys never hold their line and break easily where as the tall shield guys are robust?
Regular police will probably have refresher courses once a year after this. Or standard bearers. In fact, sign me up as a police commisar.
