Talking ysterday at the announcement of Microsoft’s acquisition of Skype for $8.5bn, Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s chief executive said that he could see huge revenue potential in the online video chat service, especially in the video advertising area. Tony Bates, Skype’s chief executive, who will now become the president of the Microsoft Skype division, said: “We think advertising is a powerful monetising stream for us.” Ballmer than revealed that the acquisition had come about after both companies had been discussing Skype using Microsoft’s sales team to ramp up advertising on the internet telephone service. Neil Stevens, Skype’s vice president and general manager of its Global Consumer team, would not reveal exactly how the increased level of advertising would affect those making video calls but did say: “The key thing will be not to get in the way of the calls…We need to find a clever way of doing it [inserting adverts].” Currently Skype users see limited advertising messages on the top of the video screen when using the service on a Microsoft powered laptop. However, it has yet to take advantage of more lucrative video advertising. Bates also batted off claims that other companies, rumoured to have been Google and Facebook, had also tried to acquire Skype in the last few weeks. He said: “We were very focused on our IPO [Initial Public Offering] and had an unsolicited offer [from Microsoft].” Skype has been downloaded 700 million times and has 10 million paying customers. Ballmer joked that lots more things in life would be better and easier if conducted over video calls, such as school meetings and family reunions. “There are better ways to do these things…and Skype and Microsoft will power them together,” he quipped. Analysts told The Telegraph that Microsoft’s purchase of Skype, the largest deal in its 36-year history, is part of a broader push into the consumer world.
Source At least we won't have to buy subscriptions.
So now before I can videochat, I will need to watch 30 sec and and the more ads ever X minutes unless I buy premium? Nice :v:
As long as they don't do something stupid and put adverts into the calls every 15 minutes.
I feel really stupid, but I have a broad economics question relating to this. When company A buys company B for XYZ dollars, well what happens to the money? Company A now owns company B... does the money technically go back to company A?
Microsoft says Skype "will suck."

(or it could be a for-stock acquisition, where shareholders receive the money in form of stock in the new purchasing company)
I hope they crack down on Skype spam. I fucking hate getting like a bunch of spam messages every time I stay on for more than 20 minutes.

Nice :v:
I hope they'd do it the same way as with Messenger. Because editing a windows file, so well known advertising domains are automatically redirected to 127.0.0.1 is fairly easy and removes 99% of all the advertising :haw:
If they do something really stupid I'll just switch to Steam chat, since it basically use the same protocol as Skype after the upgrade.
Not surprising at all.
Skype's already gone from a program I loved to an unstable, wonky and bloated thing. I hope this spurs someone to make a spin-off with a simple, non-resource whoring flair.
Imagine if Ads interupted calls: "I'm afraid I might have....Buy Windows 2010 Office for all business needs"
From the maker of A-Patch comes S-Patch... :v:
Well it was obvious the adverts were coming, how else were Microsoft going to make any money off of skype?
Skype was pretty cool, it had some dumb stuff but for the most part it was ok. I guess that's all over.
I'm okay with this, as long as they make sure their adverts don't annoy me. They probably will though.
Do share.
Hey, I'd like in on that as well. The advertisements to chat with friends are annoying.
That file is the hosts file. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_%28file%29 Here's one example how to use it to block MSN ads (untested) http://www.techmixer.com/remove-ads-from-windows-live-messenger/
The current adverts are already annoying
The current adverts are already annoying
What current ads? Am i the only one who has no ads?
I don't really care if Skype has ads as long as the whole damn user interface is upgraded. Skype's interface is just bloated and disgusting, also the program itself is a power whore.
The interface was fine. Then the new one was put in place ands its all crappy.
There are dozens of viop programs what's so special about skype?
Honestly, I thought they were just going to kill it.
Thank you Micro$oft. I don't know what I'd do without adverts.
I've never had spam :smug: I didn't even know it was an issue
I once helped an Eastern European woman help write an essay for her real estate course :v: [editline]14th May 2011[/editline] I was about 12 at the time so she probably failed.
Open Programs and Features. Select Skype 5.2. Uninstall.
