Microsoft Dev Explains Why Windows is Slower than Linux

It's gotten better, but you can't claim that they aren't just continually adding on to a really shaky foundation.

No, because I'm not claiming the foundation is shaky. Programming an OS isn't like building a house, you can't stop making these ridiculous comparisons like the analogy perfectly works. You can always modify the foundation. If there's a problem with the dynamic memory? Change the code for dynamic memory allocation. In some cases pieces will be completely re-written but starting from scratch is a ridiculous idea.
The issue with Windows is that it has SO MUCH legacy code that's simply been coded over. There's layers of stuff going all the way back to DOS.
What Windows needs to do is pull an OSX, break backwards compatibility, provide a virtualization layer but slowly ween the userbase off it. Also ship with a fucking decent terminal please, cmd.exe is disgusting.

You do know that the base of Windows takes up around 15GB, right? My entire root partition which holds all my applications (aside from Steam), my OS, my drivers and my configuration is 15GB.
Linux is tiny compared to Windows, it can even run on CDs (why doesn't Windows do this yet? It's so useful). It's becoming a problem and Microsoft doesn't seem to care to remove the bloat. You can buy a 32GB surface tablet, and it'll take up half your space, leaving you with just 16GB of useful things.
Pretty sure that Windows will slowly die off soon enough. Developers are putting focus on Linux now. And to be honest, a lot of PC gamers today prefer Linux over Windows. Only reason they're still with Windows is because of the games.

My Windows 7 took only 10 Gb and I didn't bother to strip it down to the bare minimum. It's still inexcusably large, but the truth is that Windows is by design a more complete OS than most Linux distros.
I think all OSs will die off tho, because everything released today is worse and worse.
FUck computers I will go be a sheep farmer.

It was never a problem before. 15GB when most hard drives are around 500GB was not a big deal. It's only now becoming a problem that they're deciding to put windows on extremely tiny storage spaces. As for running it off of a CD, that is occasionally useful and I think windows 8 is supposed to be able to do that on a USB stick.

Please elaborate on what you mean by `complete`? Ive always thought many Linux distro's to be more complete and functional than default Windows.

None of this justifies a 15GB OS.

is a large OS a bad OS regardless?
is a large OS a bad OS regardless?
No, it's bad because it has a lot of bagage for an OS that supposedly scales from Phones to Servers.

You can install it off of a MicroSD card if you are so inclined.
I stick with Windows because I like the GUI. The fact that it plays games and such is a bonus. I genuinely just like it.
None of this justifies a 15GB OS.
I'd say it does, to be honest. If your OS takes up ~2% of a user's hard drive you're probably not going to consider it a problem. The issue in my opinion is that they didn't cut that down for their tablets, which I would consider a problem.

Or in other words "I don't have any experience with alternatives and/or are afraid of changes"

sudo su
apt-get update && apt-get upgrade
Bam, system is getting updated.
The big problem is that while we can understand that, it's completely cryptic to a layperson. Normal users don't want to learn what is essentially a new language to do tasks like that when they can go into Windows Update and tell it to update stuff by clicking a button (or checking things off on a list if they wanna be specific.) You really need to put as much stuff into a GUI as possible for normal users. It's ease of use.
Even among us who know our way around a computer, it's just... that much more brainless. Terminals are great for giving experts the control they want, but I don't want to learn any commands if I don't need to. Even when juking around in my system, I'd rather go to the Computer Management utility than open a command prompt, know what I mean?

Give me one good reason the base install of Windows is 16GB.
Or in other words "I don't have any experience with alternatives and/or are afraid of changes"
Yo man is wrong. Linux is hippie system for short. Why would I want to try out something new??? Windows has all my games, Office, Firefox, and Powershell. Windows 8 has good release cycle and is cutting edge technology. Yo man is wrong.
Or in other words "I don't have any experience with alternatives and/or are afraid of changes"
Or in other words "Maybe if I insult people with different opinions they'll see how objectively superior my choices are!".
Or in other words "I don't have any experience with alternatives and/or are afraid of changes"
in other words you need a reason to try and feel superior to someone
over an operating system
hmm

Not neccesarily a hippie system. Me for instance like the control I'm getting. It's also really satisfying to use once a person understands how it works. Really, if all of my games were on linux, I'd never move back to Windows.
Or in other words "I don't have any experience with alternatives and/or are afraid of changes"
More like "I don't want to sacrifice my familiarity and games compatibility to gain some small performance boosts which barely effect me as a home user"
It's quite a hassle to dualboot though.
Not really. Use an SSD and changing between the two takes 20 seconds at the most.
And then this thread became a linux vs windows thread.

I don't think he is trying to feel superior to someone else. Infact I think he is pointing out the fact that people who use the excuse `it has everything I use` is not an excuse anymore to not trying out something new and different. After all progress consists of things that are new and different.
Or in other words "I don't have any experience with alternatives and/or are afraid of changes"
Because I'm obviously just a mongoloid for not sharing your opinion, right? And I've obviously never worked with an alternative before, despite assisting in setting up a Linux print server for my high school.
linux is a hassle to use for me

I think where he implied he was superior was with the "afraid of change" comment.
There's a lot of reasons to switch OS's, from whatever to whatever, but to say people aren't doing it primarily because of fear is, i think, wrong. There's a reason I've stuck with windows, even after I've done linux installs. It certainly wasn't fear.

Windows is going no where, even Steve Jobs said once it would be stupid to say linux or mac os X would take over as a OS dominate, I think honestly that microsoft needs to get their shit together
