Content creation, good lighting, good materials system, animation system, physics these are the things that will make me consider using Source 2, along the way they will hopefully release source code too.
Even if it's just a demo, the potential for HL plot advancement is still ripe. It even says "SPOILER ALERT!". Why's Atlas broken anyway?
There's not a vast amount of plot in the VR demo, it's all largely just a batch of quick, interactive punchlines that take advantage of the graphical fidelity and sense of presence - punchlines that would be dulled by knowing them beforehand. Hence the spoilers.
I wish that valve releases that portal tech demo, but it seems like an impossible dream
I'm pretty sure they will... but you know... when the headset's out.
how are you getting 'photorealistic' from that footage
it's recorded footage of a projected screen showing side-by-side, distorted demo footage
Hype can play tricks on your eyes
Are they going to be streaming the glNext thing, I assume not.
The name makes me think it has to involve a trick with a camera. Only thing I can think of is this

In other new valve just released some sales info, not sure if this warrants a thread.

or "sales" because half the games are F2P stuff.
MGR sold better than watch_dogs on PC.
For once, everything was right in the world.

Ars Technica collected that information, wasn't released by Valve.

Same. It starts in 30 minutes from this post. Hopefully it'll give us some interesting stuff on Source 2 and how versatile Vulkan will be.

Well, they did say that Dota 2 becomes the first Source 2 game, so it was kinda expected.
Many will be disappointed though

There will be cheaper steam machines.
I'm hyped. I'm real fucking hyped now.
Valve, PLEASE show some interesting Source 2 shit.
If the HTC Vive is affordable, I really wanna get it when I have the money.
they are showing dota on source 2
Those prices are not very competitive with consoles
You are forgetting the cheaper PC games compared to the expensive console games though.
Those prices are not very competitive with consoles
Of course they aren't, its largely why the steambox is considered a flop well before this when they first announced hardware partners/prices a long time ago (not to mention the undying boner they have for Linux)
Steambox would have been successful if valve actually took ownership and released a proper standard themselves, maybe priced around $500-600 at-cost or at a slight loss with the goal of making money on steam/controllers/etc. Instead valve just didn't want to actually own their concept and let the "free market" fail at making a thing that anybody can afford or actually want.

People consider it a "flop" because they expect the sales to actually compete with the consoles, with up to 50-80 million sale numbers. But that's not what they are trying to reach, otherwise you would see lots of marketing everywhere.

Jesus, $500? I know mid-higher end PC is an expensive platform but you won't be bridging consoles with a pricetag like that. Waving the tag ALIENWARE in all caps like it's a selling point wont do you any favors either, unless there's a big calling for that i'm unaware of
