That demo is actually quite good. I'm impressed.
you need to consider how hard it is to push 4k 90hz at any reasonable visual fidelity. [editline]5th March 2015[/editline] i am happy about the 2400x1080 thing because my current desktop monitor is 2560x1080. i have a pretty good measure on how games will perform with it
I understand what you're saying but that's a rendering issue, more powerful hardware and/or better game engines can do that. I don't even know if the technology is there for 4k screens that size that could do 90hz, but if it's possible it would be cool to have it in the display, even at a higher price. You can always upscale resolution if your rig can't handle it, right?
Steam Machines are mostly based on laptop hardware. Kinda disappointing. No real ITX build there
do you think they still have time for showing off l4d3?
Isn't there a second showing of the VR set tomorrow?
Isn't there a second showing of the VR set tomorrow?
Tomorrow is an expo day too, so they're probably still demoing the whole day.
Let's wait for the steam sales then :suicide:
I haven't been this hyped about a valve-related thing since...Hell, ever.
Steam Machines are mostly based on laptop hardware. Kinda disappointing. No real ITX build there
Steam Machines appear to be the casual player's gateway to the PC market, it's a home console - not a PC.
What casual player is going to spend $1000+ on a home console though?
The same people who are interested in a new PC that can play games, but don't know how to build one. A lot more people than you might think.
do you think they still have time for showing off l4d3?
If it'll be anywhere then I'm guessing there'll be a small ARG right before an E3 reveal. Really though, how cool would a L4D viral marketing campaign be? CEDA, government coverups, lots of potential but I wouldn't get too hyped.
It's a weird nitpick, but I wish they'd chosen something less Xbox-y for the controller's face buttons. Or at least different colours.
Agreed. I never liked how the Xbox's ABXY layout caught on for the PC; I will never be able to get used to it due to having used the Nintendo layout all my life. At least Sony controllers have completely different symbols on them; it's not nearly as confusing that way. Still, I'm liking the looks of those VR controllers. They look to essentially be just Wiimotes with those Steampad discs on them, which could be interesting. I wonder what kind of motion tech they're using; here's hoping it's something that can compete with STEM, which I've lost a good bit of interest in ever since the price skyrocketed from initial expectations and they went with a goofy button layout. Plus the whole "never finished Sixense-Source integration" thing from the Hydra days.
I want the steam controller.
For some reason I think arcades are going to make a comeback. VR-arcades.
Playing a "lightgun" game (like Virtua Cop) with something like Valve's VR headset would be pretty darn awesome
4k OLED panels aren't financially feasible for mass distribution at a cheaper price like this just yet. maybe in the future
I don't know, I think LG might push small higher-res OLED displays, but when I was at CES I got the impression Quantum Dot displays where what a lot of them where looking into, which isn't very good for response times IIRC; I'll ask next time I'm there about small format displays. I mean LG looked like they where certainly staying in the OLED market, they talked a lot about their smartwatch, and their curved phone displays where also P cool.
With Valve joining the VR market, I'm getting more stoked for it. Gaming in general has been really boring me out lately, and VR is getting my interest back in gaming.
Those prices are not very competitive with consoles
Eh, the starting Alienware, iBuyPower and Syber steam machines are relatively competitive with console pricing. Especially when you consider the cost of games. You could do a lot more for a lot less, but that's what you get for a prebuilt.
And it's exactly what I need. I can't get some certain games to run at decent and/or stable framerate on lowest settings, and I really want to play those games.
I seriously doubt there's that many people out there that casually play games and are willing to spend $1000+ on hardware.
You should meet some of the people I know in life. More money than sense.
I wonder how shipping is going to work with this hardware being sold on Steam. I sure hope they work international shipping with as few taxes as possible.
I wonder how shipping is going to work with this hardware being sold on Steam. I sure hope they work international shipping with as few taxes as possible.
probably being shipped from the individual manufacturers, valve doesnt have a warehouse iirc
probably being shipped from the individual manufacturers, valve doesnt have a warehouse iirc
i believe valve has a small warehouse for Valve Store goods, but it might be part of someone else's warehouse [editline]5th March 2015[/editline] "Once your order is processed it will ship from our warehouse located in Washington State via one of the methods below."
You should meet some of the people I know in life. More money than sense.
Well, then the Steam Box is perfect for them. It'll make it so they have more sense than money!
I'm sorry... which gpu are they including again?
I'm sorry... which gpu are they including again?
It's a custom GPU made specifically for the Alpha so it doesn't have an official name.
It's a custom GPU made specifically for the Alpha so it doesn't have an official name.
Just checked it again... apparently it's a gtx "m" which has a similar perfomance as a 750Ti/660.
It's based on the 860m http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-alienware-alpha-spec-analysis
