I guess officially it has passed Titanic.. But if you take in all the factors such as the 3D ticket prices being more and the currency what it was worth when Titantic was out, I think Titanic still comes out on top.

And that's not counting the "shock-and-awe" and "fight terror with terror" lines that made no real sense in context and were obviously shots at America's campaign in the Middle East.

There's also some very imperialist themes of noble savages needing a "civilized" man to lead them and show them the way, but that's probably a result of Cameron's own ignorance and lack of literary sophistication than any real intent.

The only reason those old films didn't have explosions and sex is because you didn't have CGI back then, and you couldn't show sex in movies.
