The ads aren't all bad, just mostly
That is one thing more people should do.
Not rely on ads making them money.
It is a huge risk to take.
Yeah I think people getting paid is good. Obviously I don't think Smosh/PewDiePie/Insert annoying youtuber here making buckets is good, but I quite like some of them and it's nice that they can make a living off making videos. I'm thinking criken, Ashens and I don't think they're particularly popular here, but I quite like some of the yogscast channels.

I am not a big fan of lets players making money, unless they have permission from the creators.
Anyone using other peoples content really.

Makes me think of Kickstarter as an alternative
I use ad block, does that count as lost revenue when I view a youtube video?

I wish I could filter adblock for some of the channels I like, so I know they getting money.
That'd be nice but nothing is stopping you from disabling it, viewing whatever, and enabling it again. Uncheck box. Watch. Check box.
that there is a lot of value in the 3-to-5 minute video
Oh no maybe people'll have to make longer videos and have some kind of q-q-q-quality!!!

People who watched just one of their video, subscribed and never watched any of their videos again.

Ha, I'm one of those who subcribed to them and watched some vids and then never came back. I don't know why I'm still subbed to them, but then again so am I subbed to like 600 channels, so yeah. Had my account for like 4 years or something. I'm glad for their succes tho, they seem like cool guys to meet and hang out with.

You can kinda do this, you can tell it not to run on a specific page (like a channel) but youd have to watch the videos on the channel page itself which is inconvenient
Or just pause it when you're about to watch a vid, again slightly inconvenient but it supports your favorite youtubers while filtering the ads on the rest
or maybe get a real fucking job
or maybe get a real fucking job
A "real" job doesn't pay as nicely though.
A "real" job doesn't pay as nicely though.
And a "real" job isn't as huge a risk when it comes to income.
A "real" job will also support you for much longer than making videos on youtube most likely will.
What on earth happened to going to work
A "real" job will also support you for much longer than making videos on youtube most likely will.
Depends on how they spent their money. And they can still get a normal job.

fyi there are jobs white people just don't want to do them
Depends on how they spent their money. And they can still get a normal job.
Not if they make videos fulltime.
or maybe get a real fucking job
Who made you the supreme ruler of deciding if a job is real?
Not if they make videos fulltime.
I mean when making videos will stop being profitable.
I mean when making videos will stop being profitable.
Oh, in that regard you're right.
While making money off of youtube is nothing new, I hate the trend of even remotely popular channels riding off of the fads, like those godawful video stills. It's not like this is the first time it's happened either, remember when everyone and their mother decided to start reviewing things? They realized they could make a significant amount of money and abused the hell out of it. It went way too far and people ended up reviewing shit like frozen dinners. Now, years down the line, most of those people have fallen into obscurity, hell, their haven, TWGTG, has slowly torn itself apart from the inside.
I'm sure most of these channels will be around for as long as they keep making money, but basing all of your livelihood on something that could very easily burst per-se, and treating it like your business is going way too far.
Also, "President of Smosh" :v:
Hey, let's not rail on these guys for making money off ads. Or for the shitty content on YouTube.
I'll be blunt, we're acting entitled. No other internet site allows people to upload, for free, videos literally over an hour long, in 1080p, and to allow people to watch them for free. And you're not being denied access to the videos unless you pay. You just have to deal with the relatively minor annoyance of watching a short ad, most of which you can skip, at the start of some videos. Oh, and Adblock removes them completely. I mean, hey, yes, you've got to feel sad over the fact that most of the videos with the greatest number of views are complete shit that any intelligent person couldn't possibly enjoy, but it's not like it's directly losing you money, or like it's affecting your life in any major way. Nobody's forcing you to watch that garbage with a gun to your head.
Who gives a fuck how people on YouTube make their money? If we start defining what jobs should be paid and what shouldn't, you can kiss the entire film, video game and music industry goodbye, for starters. Not to mention professional sports.
The main reason there are entertainers?
They get paid.
or maybe get a real fucking job
They are doing what they enjoy and getting paid for it with no skin off my back, who cares.
I want to make money off youtube if I could. Me and my friend were thinking of starting a let's play channel even. What the hell right? Who cares if some people think its stupid as fuck. It's equal opportunity, and you don't have to watch it if you don't want to.
Multiple streams of income is something EVERYONE should be thinking about. To make it actually successful you'd have to make it your job and be diligent.
You need some kind of unique angle to be successful. There are a lot of Let's Play videos, yours will be lost in the crowd unless you figure out something that would make yours special.
The good news is it could be anything. Maybe you have a good voice for voiceovers. Maybe your videos are funny, maybe you're especially good at the game. As a viewer I can tell you the thing that gets me to stop watching a video and look for something else is when the video is generic. That is, there is nothing notable about how it's produced, about who is in it or speaking over it, nothing special about the content...when it just looks like something someone did when they were bored.
