AMD is finished: Bank hired to explore options; sale of assets possible

It's a shame AMD and Intel are the only decent microchip companies. At least this leaves room for another company to step up, and replace AMD, because since Intel has no competition they're gonna jack up the prices, and people will start looking for some other decent cpu's, or hell, even gpu's.
Any ideas who could be the next chip giant?
Well at least a lot of smartphone manufacturers (samsung, etc) are starting to make their own chip architecture and maybe they'll expand in that category and take the chance to make budget CPUs in AMD's place?
well this is shit

Do you seriously think being able to force SSAO in games is the driving force behind why people buy their cards? :v:
Hardly, and the crossfire idea is also very enthusiast based, even if it is a good idea it's hardly their main priority.
Most people just skim the latest benchmarks and see how cards that are similarly priced perform, then buy the cheapest one that performs the best.

In that case AMD video cards would be bought nearly all the time given that they're usually cheaper and nearly the same quality as Nvidia, if not equal or better.
What the fuck, I didn't know things would be this bad with AMD. They have some really good stuff going for them, and recently they've definitely become a competent competitor.
Please don't let this happen, I still need to buy my computer D:
because once amd is sold all the amd chips out there will magically disappear
totally
if anything, you're probably going to be getting cheaper chips since they're likely to go on clearance or whatnot

That isn't always the case you know, stop seeing things in black/white.

i bought a 6770 cause it was fuckin cheap and had a good price/performace ratio
There are some people (me included) who were stung by supposedly high-end AMD GPU's one time too many and refuse to go back for more.
what are you on about
If AMD goes under, the CPSC better break up Intel because its a monopoly
There are some people (me included) who were stung by supposedly high-end AMD GPU's one time too many and refuse to go back for more.
Honestly, I have never had any driver issues myself with AMD cards, but with both nvidia cards I had years ago I had issues constantly.
It's different for every person based on what cards they have owned and what was happening at the time, you can't say "company a which sells gpu's always has bad drivers".
Every AMD card I've bought has never died, nor had any sort of malfunction apart from a stock fan making annoying grinding sounds. Drivers never let me down.

On the other hand the last Geforce GPU I bought had an idle temperature of 60 C because it came overclocked at factory settings (it's not just because of where I bought it, the entire product line was designed like that because it lagged behind its AMD equivalent, and other Geforce cards are like that too). It also had a massive pricetag despite being quite weak even for its time. It destroyed itself trying to run at 70% load in a new, clean, ventilated computer case - the fan broke. Even though it wasn't near max load it peaked at nearly 100 C.
My HD 6850 hasn't had any problems aside from strange framerate issues in Dragon Age: Origins despite getting it at a bargain.
I hope they don't go under, I don't want Intel to control the desktop microprocessor market.
They won't die, it's more likely that some sort of proprietor will buy them and we'll see some sort of massive revamp. There's tons of electronics companies that would love nothing more than to own their won semiconductor business. Even though there's a high volume of sales up for grabs in the larger processor market place it is mostly split square between Intel and Amd, it would be much easier to buy one of the two than to make another competitor in the already Intel-dominated market if your a electronics company whose serious about vertical integration.
How about full driver support all the way back to the Nvidia 6000 series as apposed to being told to fuck off after 3 years by AMD?
Oh so they don't have an infinite supply of money and manpower? Who would have thought!
But I'm fairly sure they do have support pretty far back, at least partial.

nobody cares!
AMD are a pretty cool company but it'll be nice seeing who replaces them, I think it'll probably be samsung or some similar far east company

What does this have to do with high-end GPUs? Not to mention the 2/3/4 are still supported BTW, just on a "critical fixes" perspective: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/legacy/Pages/legacy-radeonaiw-vista64.aspx
I'm kinda curious as to why computer chips have such a small amount of companies making them. I'm assuming it's because of the expenses.

It's kind of like starting up an airline - very fucking expensive, requires very skilled labor. It's not like it's a small business you can simply start with enough determination. Maybe if you were in college and had a lot of skilled friends, but otherwise, you'd need to either have moneybags or get the help of a venture capitalist or ten. And chances are you would just go under very rapidly because you wouldn't have the manpower and resources to compete unless you somehow came up with innovative designs before starting the business.
I like AMD processors, never used their GFX cards, always used Nividia with AMD processors as they have cuda support.

Got it in one. Chip founderies cost something like a billion or so apiece.
Oh it's not like the thread is directly related to them and their hardware or anything.. no?
it is but people who constantly say oh x product worked perfectly for me! will always get a reply no x worked shit y always worked fine for me! and it just turns into a poop storm because nobody is going to back down, nobody cares that x y z worked fine for you because
the world isn't black and white

Omg Valve buy it omg!!
Say this got me thinking. If Steam did buy AMD not only would they then have an opening on the hardware side, they would gain 20+ years of R&D of hardware. They could fuck every other company over since they would own the APU's that are needed in their competitors systems. They could make a killing

Not getting constant driver updates isn't telling you to fuck off by any means
You can still stay on the old drivers if you feel you want to do so. Nothing is stopping you.

yeah valve could become our overlords!
I really don't think Valve has enough money to justify purchasing AMD.
I'm kinda curious as to why computer chips have such a small amount of companies making them. I'm assuming it's because of the expenses.
Insanely high fixed costs in manufacturing, combined with even more insane research and development costs.
You can't be a 'small company' in that kind of market. Not without high costs, products that aren't new, or some other corner cutting measures.

AMD has a market value of 1.4 billion and debt of 2 billion
Gabe is a billionaire
It does not matter if you like nvidia or amd or both, you will suffer either way if AMD crashes. Prices will go up, quality will go down. It does not matter who is better, as a consumer we need competition and lots of it.
