Although there's no denying that her winning was also political. But at least she deserved it the most that year.
Eurovision is freak show
You think Muslims need pest control and now you think drag queens are freaks. Really covering the bases there, eh?
(S)he won because looking different? Godamned it, there were so many better performances that should have won. I kinda wished the Netherlands won because that song was great, I really enjoyed it and it wasn't way too over the top like most Eurovision songs
Next year the UK needs to hold an actual rave, with XTC and cocaine and a shit DJ.
What is it Sargent
You're secretly a frenchman.
It's funny seeing all of the people who are angry about it are people who lost :v:
My top 10 (Alphabetically) were:
Armenia, Austria, Greece, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, and Sweden.
Austria had fantastic vocals, and I am happy to see them win.

bring back donk then hold 2016 eurovision at a rebuilt wigan pier
This is pretty fucked imo, the televoting counts for literally nothing

Before juries people kept complaining about bloc voting, and they would again this year. Jury is there to prevent that.

The problem is the juries seem to completely overpower the televoting, making it pointless. They should tweak the ratio a bit so the televoting still has a chance of making a difference.
I can't really appreciate the music in Eurovision, but as far as presentation goes I was pretty happy Austria won. Loved the lights and screen and the bearded lady was pretty.

The picture even says that it's 50/50 both, but then the actual results say differently.

They probably think of us Europeans as a bunch of weird village oafs.
I'm really curious what the Americans think of us about all this tbh.
Someone in this thread compared it to American Idol but it doesn't seem the same. I don't know anyone who cares about American Idol, and I bet that if you posted an American Idol thread in SH it'd be met with complete indifference from us Americans.
Best losers EU but that's ok, at least it's an achievement in a way, we have been noticed ! YEAH :suicide:

I'd say it's more like a Superbowl version of American Idol, where you root for your states team or something, although I don't know if it's Superbowl level crazy with viewership numbers.
I'll quote a reddit post which really hits the nail on the head on the whole ordeal
The answer is - it's complicated and multifaceted, because even though for most people it's just a laugh, Eurovision is kind of a big part of what modern Europe is and how it got that way. It means completely different things to different generations and nationalities. I can try to offer some of my understanding of it; I'd appreciate corrections and nuances I'd missed.
So, some history: In post-war Europe, a prime priority by those scarred by the war was to tie the European nations closer together so that the petty national squabbles would be less potent ground for exploitation by xenophobes. (By and large, they succeeded; blind hatred has been reduced to hackneyed jokes and stereotypes, and nowadays most of our right-wing animosity is against Muslims and generic forriners and I guess that's progress?)
The Eurovision network was one of the institutions built to try to accomplish this. It isn't actually the name of the contest, it's the name of the actual video network that was created to link the European broadcasters together. A production comes in "on Eurovision" in the same way it might have been "live via Early Bird satellite" in the 70s, when productions coming in live from far away could be a big deal. Most everyone in Europe will instantly recognize the Eurovision jingle.
Eurovision is operated by the European Broadcasting Union, which is kind of like a network/affiliate model, and is a very separate entity from the EU. Anyway, by far the best-known Eurovision production, to the extent that people will call the programme by the name of the network, is the Eurovision Song Contest.
When it was originally set up in the fifties and sixties before the widespread introduction of irony, this was real popular culture. Songs that won the Eurovision would be bona fide hits (and some of them have very lasting appeal, like France Gall and Åse Kleveland (dat voice) - though my favorite is a 1980 song essentially making fun of the contest).
With the development of a more independent youth culture in the late 1960s, it gradually began to shed much of its mainstream relevance as a musical event, but it was still engrained as a tradition, something you'd watch primarily because it's a big deal - like how you still watch the Olympic opening ceremony even though you don't care about sports.
So now throughout Western Europe, it is an occasion, something you generally will watch, maybe arrange a small party to watch together. But you still won't really care who wins unless it's your country, and that's just as likely to be anger at next year's license fee being increased or other productions slashed to accomodate the major expense of hosting it.
(BTW, gay people are stereotypically vastly more invested in this than others. Some of my gay friends have actually travelled to Denmark, and there are long debates about participants and songs on Facebook. I don't know why, and I don't feel qualified to speculate about the appeal.)
With the fall of the iron curtain and the inclusion of more Eastern European countries came the participation of countries where a lot of people view this more like Western Europe viewed it in the 1960s - as a very important thing - and in the case of the more primitive nations, a honest-to-Aliyev propaganda tool. This is something Western Europe is partly confused and partly amused by.
TL;DR: At the least, people watch it because it's a tradition and a huge and lavish TV production and show. There are a bunch of different additional reasons which are complex and varied, and intertwined with the Old World becoming a modern Europe - in a quirky and fun way.
Jan Ola Sand (Executive Supervisor of ESC) actually said that eurovision has a bit less viewers than Superbowl.

wow, Georgia votes has been disqualified because all jurors voted the same and it's (quote) "statistically impossible, so this means they broke the rules"
I'm really curious what the Americans think of us about all this tbh.
"No wonder why we left Europe." - The Average American mindset after seeing a bearded lady win a singing competition.
The funniest thing about Eurovision is that people's SMS are essentially meaningless - decision of Jury is overwhelming. If their votes would be eliminated, I seriously doubt that Austria would get first place.
Take a look here for example - According to voters, Poland was first, but according to Jury - it was 25th, resulting in no points. The entire system is flawed, because without Jury it was a contest "Look Who Has The Most Emigrants Over The Europe (Turkey, Mostly)"
Anyone believing it's still about best song is deluded.
If you believe people voted on Poland because they had the best song and not because of this...:

Largest non sports viewership of any program, apparently. I'v read between 180m and 600m depending on the year. Its easily the most watched thing in Europe.

80m this year with an average of 125m according to our tv commentators.
