LHC to shut down for a year to address safety concerns

I just spoke to my tutor at UCL who works at the LHC, he said its all bullshit, they knew this was going to happen for ages they are still going to do a year and a half of low energy runs before it shuts down for a year. http://twitter.com/JonMButterworth, its a bit hard to find, but its in there somewhere.

oh fuck oh fuck were gonna be poor
It's like they're doing it on purpose so that they activate it at full power in 2012 just to mess with the "end of the world" believers.
I'd do the same.
Wouldn't we all.
How Ironic if it actually did end the world though.
:irony:
You are an idiot and a dumb idiot at that. :colbert:
Have some more boxes.
You are blind! You are avoiding the TRUTH!
edit:
You are truly a mad man!
I'm also pretty sure the human race didn't make any huge leaps by blowing up experiments for no good reason.
We wouldn't know how to liquify gas if it wasn't for Cailletet's accidental explosion, which led to his discovery of the critical point of gases.
I just wish they would destroy this thing.
I just wish they would destroy this thing.
Why?
That would have meant this was a monemunetal waste of money, and so far they are doing exactly as they planned.
I think we're forgetting:
If it blows up, it's chemistry. If it stinks, it's biology. If it doesn't work, it's physics.
Nice one scientists. Now where's that cure for cancer?
...that's because it's not being running at the power required to achieve results you ding bat.
Tell me if I'm wrong, but the LHC is not new tech, it's just FUCKING HUGE compared to normal particle accelerators.
Still it pushes current technology to it's limits.
The incredible size needs it to use or invent new technologies because the old one from "smaller" particle accelerators weren't suitable for the LHC's size.
Also the LHC is a young accelerator and uses newer technologies than those accelerators which already exist for 10 years or more.
They are dealing with enough power to run a small city like Geneva for a month each time they turn this on and run it. 14 tetra volts is just a huge amount of energy, couple that with the tonnes of liquid helium and you have a pretty volatile mix if anything where to go wrong (not explode but fucking go crazy)
14 TeV. That is 14 Tera - not tetra - electron volts - Not volts.
Also, that's the energy of one proton-proton collision and equals a Mosquite at a few MPh. But since they are working with 10^9 or even more protons per beam, the total energy in one beam equals a Boing 747 at many 100 MPh.
And the actual problem concerning "safety" is, they don't want to risk a superconducting magnet to lose it's superconducting phase again so it burns out and breaks a whole into the cooling system which then will release tons of liquid Helium (which is EXPENSIVE).

Then you better don't use your not working Computer :)
What?
It says in this article it's running at half power and still getting good results so far, it's getting final repairs then going to run at max

My orignial post's intention was to say that they did not use the LHC to perform much experiments to begin with, therefore shutting it down did not make too much difference.
What's the possibility of something going wrong with this thing and sucking the world into a blackhole?
Just wondering, I really never looked into this thing just heard about it, wondering how stable this thing is.
Its ridiculously stable, it's more likely that a velociraptor will spontaneously be created from the proteins in your liver and anus.

but that would be fucking badass!
Not if it formed from within your anus
anusraptors
i guess you could say... the LHC is having some troubles thank to candle ja-... xD
It's not going to function in our lifetime.
It's functioning right now.

It's presumed that thanks to Hawking Radiation the microblack hole would evaporate almost instantly since it's so small.
Damn, I was expecting results soon. :saddowns:
I wasn't expecting anything for a while to be honest.

It is low, approaching zero very very fast - If not even zero. Seriously: The world's largest particle smasher called "Universe" (tm) does it's smashing experiments everywhere at everytime now for about 13.7 billion years.
For me, that sounds like it's safe - Or did earth got sucked in by a BH during that time? No.
