The technical reason is that pigs can't be slaughtered in the way their religion requires (and that it says not to in their religious text). The fact that pork is often parasite ridden (usually from the fact that they eat anything) and isn't so obvious about it when it spoils is probably another motivation for it to be banned.
It is like Roald Dahl's poem 'The Pig', from 'Dirty Beasts'.
Pig realises that he is born to be eaten by humans, turns on the farmer, and eats him instead.

My pet warthog actually knocked over our chain link fence and tipped a trashcan over to eat a pet rabbit we disposed of, ate all of it. But otherwise she was a sweetheart most of the time, they'll just do anything they can to get to where they know food is.
