GunFox permabanned amute with the reason “Has apparently spent the last month trolling every user page he could find.”
Apparently so.
isn't that ban worthy?
Hence the ban.

I wish I had GM, just to read his RC thread, doubtless using the words "personal ban"

The answer is your question is an emphatic yes.
I don't see the problem. Cables shouldn't leak and cables shouldn't contain too much information.
The simple fact someone managed to grab cables should not make those people criminals. Instead, it should mean that those criminals (by now) that leaked those cables should be found and justice should be served.
This is one of the stupidest things WikiLeaks has ever done.
Instead of trying to contain documents exposing serious personal information of people involved in the thousands upon thousands of cables, or at least stating that they think such leaks are wrong, they did anything BUT take the moral high road. They just opened the door to harassment of certain individuals by the thousands.
I can't see how such a move won't cripple WikiLeaks's integrity and trust among many communities.
It's a tough situation, not only because of who's plain (which apparently was the Guardian, not so much WikiLeaks).
It's obvious that some secrets exist for a reason and can protect lives. On the other hand, the information can be used to bring justice to those that try to evade it. Ideally you can just release the information that a certain kind of injustice has happened without using certain names, while the full information relevant for the jurisdictional system is kept somewhere else.
The question is: Who do we trust that information with? If we try to distribute power/information to multiple people, there's a chance one of them will do silly stuff with it, like the Guardian demonstrated with its share of power. If the information ends up in the wrong hands, not only will the situations that could be changed for the better stagnate, but it also creates an atmosphere for safety that may give birth to similar incidents in the future.
Of course giving all the info to "the people" as done now is also full of problems like people in this thread pointed out.
I think WikiLeaks has a good concept and apparently also very good sources, but it falls short in its execution or management. If it wasn't for this incident I'd even say "But it's better than nothing", but I don't think I could say that to the faces of possible victims. Pizza jokes are one thing, but acts of vigilance that may occur are another genre entirely.
I think the moral of the story is this, if you are going to do something that requires tight lips and confidentiality, don't write it down on a damn piece of paper that anyone could grab..
Jesus, if you search his user page posts he has been trolling user pages for months.
EDIT: This is what? The second? The third? Time I have had to permaban him after unbanning one of his accounts? Maybe this time I will learn. Jeeze.
GunFox, you are wonderful!
It wasn't even Wikileaks that released them...

Yes but this is facepunch and reading articles is for scrubs. Instead, we skim over the title and then impose our personal views on the subject and then try and guess what happened.
You must be new here.

Doesn't mean I shouldn't tell them :v:

Wikileaks didn't release them, they just didn't secure their shit properly
Wikileaks didn't release them, they just didn't secure their shit properly
No this is different. Someone from the Guardian apparently leaked the password and it was available in some corners of the internet apparently. Now Wikileaks responded by dumping the rest of them, completely uncensored, out in the open. Before it was unknown for most where to find it. You must be thinking this is just an article about the former only maybe? I did too at first.
But on Friday it announced on its Twitter feed: "Shining a light on 45 years of US 'diplomacy', it is time to open the archives forever."
It then began publishing its remaining cables, grouped by the country they relate to. They include 34,687 files on Iraq, 8,003 on Kuwait, 9,755 on Australia and 12,606 on Egypt.

I don't want to be the dick of the moment, but I find that joke in bad taste.
I mean, I agree with Wikileak's philosophy that corporations and governments should be transparent and open, but I also believe that each individual person shouldn't have to face personal harassment as a result of transparency. I personally don't know the Pope, but I can infer that he's a pious and genuine man. Does his ascendance to the most respected position of the Catholic Church mean he should be ridiculed and disrespected?
Just my $.02
Read those details again. John Paul II isn't the Pope anymore.
Wikileaks didn't release them, they just didn't secure their shit properly
I know that they didn't originally leak the information, but:
The Guardian said the archive contained several thousand files marked "Strictly protect," indicating US officials thought sources could be endangered if identified. Some files also name victims of sex offences, people persecuted by their governments and the locations of sensitive government installations, said the paper.
One cable dated December 2004 contains the telephone numbers of key figures at the Vatican, including the then Pope John Paul II.
That's WikiLeaks actually leaking info anyway.
On a related note, this completely demolishes the sting of the US diplomatic cables. Instead of cherrypicking corruption to display in the US State department, they just dumped everything on their servers and asked people to look through the thousands upon thousands of documents that weren't publicly available. It's already a good piece of work doing research analysis through a regular cable release.

well there is that child rape thing that's been lingering around him
;32079150']I never liked wikileaks, and like them less now.
I never liked Assange, he's a massive douche.
I respect Wikileaks the organization.
I never liked Assange, he's a massive douche.

Assange shouldn't be as big as he is, he has become bigger than Wikileaks which IMO is bad. It detracts from the stuff Wikileaks does.
Is there anything interesting in these new cables or is it just the usual "The North Sudan ambassador likes to wash his hands after touching a dog"
Hey guys remember when wikileaks actually had a purpose for good.
Yeah, me neither
Hey guys remember when wikileaks actually had a purpose for good.
Actually yeah, I do. I still do.
It is a really shitty year to be a spy.
I hate to say I told you so.
But the first thing I worried about when I heard about the leaks was that Wikileaks is not secure enough to protect these files.
;32079003']A few months ago he left 6 insulting messages on my account page. I've deleted them, though.
One of his posts on your wall was this:
The cave floor called, it wants its batshit back.
Considering you called for the nuking of Israel and North Korea and also advocated stoning as a valid punishment, I'd say his post was pretty accurate.

Reminds me of some 20 y/o who got the ability to ban whoever they wanted after whining about it like a baby... oh wait.
