Young cannabis smokers run risk of lower IQ, report claims

My grades went up when I started using cannabis (D's and C's to A's and B's), then declined again when I quit.
Yeah heavy usage DOES tend to turn people stupid. it's not a sure thing by any means but anyone who has been around drug people a lot know this is true
Of course, I didn't use it heavily. Every other week or so.
Automerge broken.
Can those things be attributed to cannabis or to the social implications of the use of the drug? If one lives the lifestyle where they smoke frequently it stands to reason that other factors could come into effect - e.g. diet. When compared to something like cigarettes is it any worse? Does vaporization or consumption have the same effects?
Also, doesn't one's IQ drop with age anyway?
You heard it here first. Eating munchie foods and listening to Bob Marley makes you dumber.
If weed becomes a problem in your life then that's your fault, not marijuana's. Sure I would LOVE to smoke every day but I don't because I can control my habits, just like some people control their drinking or whatever.
Alcohol is legally available to most Europeans years before it is to Americans :v:
That's because Europeans are wrong and they don't know anything about biology or human development!!!
Edit: It's a joek guise :(
Eh this kind of scares me. I remember being tested when I was younger and I had an IQ of 136. I'm not sure if it's because I haven't been in school for a year or because I smoked a lot, but I'm afraid that maybe I'm not so smart as I once was.
I hope this study isn't accurate.
Yeah, not surprising because usually minors can't handle it and make it more important to them than doing good in school.
Anectdotal evidence doesn't exist... but I have seen what smoking a lot of weed can do to people in the long run. It's not good.
I'm partial to a joint on occasion, but I used to know a guy that would smoke 3 or 4 a day. He went from being a charming, intelligent and fucking hilarious mate... to a mumbling, grumpy leech. All he would do was sit and smoke. People that say it's harmless are full of shit.
I miss that guy :(
Agreed, it's really hard to smoke weed that often and not get lazy.
It's not about weed being neurotoxic, it's about the fact that it can lead to a lot less motivation in (especially young) people. If you don't care about education or getting a job, you're not gonna do well in it, and smoking weed all day is a fast-track to not really giving a fuck about anything.
Some people can do it, it's just not so common. Heavy use generally = bad
I am 100% sure that cannabis is not the direct factor of the IQ decrease, but rather the subjects' lack of desire to learn and apply their knowledge (due to cannabis). Basically, I don't think cannabis itself lowers the IQ, but rather the subject allowing themselves to 'slack off' due to their usage.
Edit: Essentially, this study suggests that people with weak willpower will slack off when using cannabis.
I knew a few friends in school who became stoners, I did notice they became dumber and slower and more zoned out a lot of the time. Then again I think it was only temporary.
I had a few stoner friends aswell.
I was amazed at how they actually zoned out completely and took them like 5 seconds or more to answer a simple question. All along with one of those faces that makes you look like you are currently seeing the end of time.
You heard it here first. Eating munchie foods and listening to Bob Marley makes you dumber.
No, but drug usage is generally associated with poverty which is associated with a poor diet.

This.
No smart ass with his/her "hurr weed is natural, weed is good, wont hurt you" and no multi-billion dollar study can deny that weed CAN make you turn into a dimwitt.
The things I've seen will always prove me otherwise... Oh man :v:
Yea not surprised
The recovery in IQ when they quit tells me that it appears to be a motivation problem, rather than an actual physical thing. It would make sense that it would affect younger people who's priorities aren't set in stone.
IQ has nothing to do with motivation or the knowledge one has, it's a measure of one's ability to solve a given set of tests.
I smoked marijuana 4 times.
I appear to have gotten smarter, with an increase in "good" grades during the much harder A-level exams (although that might be becuase I actually revised for them. That said, I do sometimes find it hard to find the right word I want to use- although I'm putting that down to a much larger than usual vocabulary).

I really don't think smoking marijuana four times would have an effect on anything.

Smoking cannabis four times is not going to do anything to you significant

I think things messing with your brain when it's still developing do more damage than just a lack of motivation.
And here I was told weed could do no harm. I would like more studies showing the negative effects because they certainly do exist.
I know it's probably been said before, but this could easily be fixed by regulating it like Alcohol or Cigarettes. Although, I'm really not surprised...

I don't think that of the thousand people they used, they all came from the same ghetto neighbourhood.
"Weed doesnt hurt you"

It is relatively harmless, that guys just a tool.

how do you know this
100% sure is a mighty strong conviction there

the data is consistent with both hypotheses.

I'd put money on it being the drawn out after effects of the high, for a couple of days after it you can feel a wee bit mentally sluggish, after 3 or 4 days though you're good.
so does weed make you stupid or do you have to be stupid to smoke weed?

That isn't exactly a scientific analysis there...
I can also attest to knowing people who have turned into grumpy, unmotivated slugs because of long term over use. Being high is addictive, some people have a really hard time stopping and become dependent.
