Young cannabis smokers run risk of lower IQ, report claims
Yes my terrible agenda of dispelling ignorance by demonstrating why people are completely wrong
Yup.
I can't get over one thing in this study. How come turning 18 is a magical point in time that makes a drug safe to use. That's just complete bullshit. And they never tell how much that drop is. At least I didn't see any mention in the article. It could be 5 points for all we know.
Well clearly I'm so sorry that you don't like my comparison. Here's a better one.
that's not even a comparison!
[editline]29th August 2012[/editline]
and maybe you should apologize for being a condescending passive-aggresive dick instead!
Again, the media attacking the weed.
18 years old?, AGE DOESNT EVEN EXIST LOL
why are you being so hostile? and like i said, weed & anti-depressants is a very stupid comparison. if you were just making it in a mocking manner than it's a pointless comparison.
It's a poor attempt at Lankist mimicry
Yup.

"For example, researchers found that individuals who started using cannabis in adolescence and then carried on using it for years showed an average eight-point IQ decline."
and the 18 mark is not absolute, it varies from person to person blah blah blah but basically it's because your body transitions to a normal adult body around that time. Some functions expand for a while longer but around 18 is the turning point
I imagine that, much like alcohol, as long as you don't do every single day it's fairly harmless.

Really
Really
You don't like me so I'm clearly reaching and pretending to be something you don't like
Your logic is impeccable

"They found that those who persistently used cannabis - smoking it at least four times a week year after year through their teens, 20s and, in some cases, their 30s - suffered a decline in their IQ."

how am i being irrational? if you read my posts you'd notice that i'm actually on your side in the way that i'm defending this studies credibility and not treating it as some attack on a drug i enjoy. read your posts in this thread on the other hand, then talk to me about rationality.
I must've missed that. Well, why is everybody getting worked up over an 8 point drop? IIRC the margin of error on a standard IQ test is like 15 points. Think about it.

Okay buddy
Key word here: "Scientific study"
That means such things are taken into account, okay?
Seriously these people are professionals do you not understand that

it's hard to like you, let alone respect you when you approach every argument with a dickhead condescending tone

i don't think there's anything wrong in finding out the potential harm that a widely used substance can cause. the most important thing to do with ANY drug is to educate people on both the possible beneficial and detrimental effects

The irrationality stems from you immediately going 'oh oh ignore him' because I said something you don't like

i said to ignore you because you're clearly biased here and others could portray the same points you're attempting to far better. and noones gonna learn anything from you mate, not with the attitude you have

That's not what I meant. If the average drop is half the margin of error, then the drop is nowhere near enough to make a damn difference you smartass.
I like Lankist
Again with the assumptions
You wouldn't like someone pretending to be him though
And that's what I am to you because you don't like me
I don't care except that your comparison is faulty. I hardly even see lankist's posts and I've never noticed a posting style he has, if any
I think it's a bad idea to use any intoxicating substances before your brain is fully developed.
That's not what I meant. If the average drop is half the margin of error, then the drop is nowhere near enough to make a damn difference you smartass.
Uh, yes it is
The normal margin of error on political polls is 3-3.5% and everybody flips their shit over a 1% change day-to-day.
Seriously this is an established method of science. It relies on logic and natural progression to discover new things. If you really think the scientific method (you know that thing we base all our studies on) is faulty, you should go to the media with your wondrous views
I think it's a bad idea to use any intoxicating substances before your brain is fully developed.
i agree, but no matter what it's gonna happen. i mean, i drank, smoked weed & smoked cigarettes for a long time before i was 18 and still continue to use all 3 pretty heavily and then some. the thing is to educate people on what these things will do to help people know it's a bad idea or at least to mitigate the damage. would i have smoked less weed if i'd known the adverse effect it's (probably) had on me now that i'm an adult? probably not but still lol
That's because you approached the discussion with a "I'm right and you hate me for that" attitude.
Protip: On an internet forum your opinion has as much weight as everyone else's.

You mean like in real life??
You should read my posts instead of trying to get in my head. I've been in it for decades longer than you have.

How did you go from what I said to me discrediting the research. I never even hinted at that. Maybe you should try reading other people's posts.
When science lands a rover on Mars, discovers a new species of animal, or innovates a new medical breakthrough

Oooh fiesty
Here's the thing: That was a post demonstrating it does make a difference. You said, quite clearly:
"the drop is nowhere near enough to make a damn difference"
It does.

Because if its not something good about science, they call bullshit because science can never be wrong.

i can see how some people can be skeptical when it comes to studies concerning marijuana considering the campaign of misinformation against marijuana that has been going for so long.
You wouldn't like someone pretending to be him though
And that's what I am to you because you don't like me
So are you saying this is my default position on people I don't like?
Oooh fiesty
Here's the thing: That was a post demonstrating it does make a difference. You said, quite clearly:
"the drop is nowhere near enough to make a damn difference"
It does.
Let me repeat that again: Where do I discredit the research?
Did I say that they're wrong? Did I say that their methods were incorrect? Did I say that the IQ test is inconclusive? All I said was that the drop is, as you quoted me, "nowhere near enough to make a difference". I don't really think that your IQ dropping 8 points will turn you into a mindless drone. Hence the comparison with the margin of error.
