Thieves cut the power
what do you mean THEY cut the power they're criminals, man
they can also just look up during daylight and see a star too
They won't, Too much smog :v:
How so?
a symbolic act that pacifies the climate debate, like when big tax avoiding companies donate money to charity to make people forget
This is an awareness campaign. Nobody is seriously trying to suggest turning off your lights for an hour is going to somehow save the planet. As soon as the advertising campaign for earth hour begins they can promo not just the hour itself but the entire issue like crazy - they get interviews, celebrities, get it being talked about amongst people irl, etc. If it takes a rather pointless excersize for it to be discussed then so be it - don't bother participating.

Its funny how its all EARTHHHH HOUR. Yet theres only one light being turned off. gg.
Did i get them all? :D Wheres my prize!
Oh, it was earth hour? Well damn, I missed my chance to turn literally every electronic gadget in my house on.
I forgot. Again.
Oh, it was earth hour? Well damn, I missed my chance to turn literally every electronic gadget in my house on.
Butters, you're supposed to be grounded. Get off the PC!
Earth Hour is so ridiculous, it does more damage than good.
I think you mixed that up with time adjustment. Read the OP maybe?
I'm not familiar with how power stations work, but I sort of imagine them outputting a base amount of energy into the grid that's going to be put out regardless (again, correct me if i'm wrong) and excess is either stored or dissipates. Would turning off lights really affect that? Wouldn't it either have almost no effect on electricity generation (which would be the thing causing any sort of pollution) or possibly even be wasteful depending on the grid architecture? I guess it's just a symbolic sort of thing anyways. The message is kind of muddled though, romanticizing a lack of electricity is kind of luddite-ish.
The power company tries to match their generation capacity to the demand. When you have a large abrupt change in demand, it can actually cause severe damage to generators and the power grid in general. When you have a generator at a given load and suddenly drop the load to zero, it could start to overspin because the power turning the generator would remain constant while the demand dropped off. If no sanity checks were in place to slow the generator down, it could severely damage itself or explode. The inverse is also true, if you have a generator that immediately goes from a low to high load, it could stall, overheat or have mechanical failure; Like the generator shaft breaking from sudden extreme axial loads.
isn't earth hour bullshit anyways? wouldn't all those people turning things back on just make it worse? As it spikes for a moment in how much electricity is used to turn lights on?
Oh, it was earth hour? Well damn, I missed my chance to turn literally every electronic gadget in my house on.
Fight the power, TestECull
Not being funny, just wondering why?

How does it exactly? I've never bothered to participate but just curious.

I think you mixed that up with time adjustment. Read the OP maybe?
Turn off all of your electrical appliances and devices connected at home all at once and then switch them all back on again, then have fun replacing all of your fuses. Sudden electrical fluctuations have never been a good idea, especially in countries with shittier power infrastructure. (not to mention the fact that it provides practically zero difference in power consumption, so you're stressing your infrastructure for no fucking reason) edit: oh and I forgot to mention the amount of people who light up candles during earth hour is massive and causes an increase in carbon dioxide emissions
I participated in Earth Hour by turning my cars lights off when I was driving last night Kidding, but this shit is so dumb I didn't even realise it was on until now, and even then I never saw the pro's to turning everything off for an hour

But most people just do it because 'lel hashtag earth hour'.

As for spikes of high demand - that's what hydroelectric power plants are for (at least in the UK anyway).

They wouldn't had managed to got so many countries into this shit if it wasn't support from the United Nations. That's why all the countries want to jump in on this shit
Oh, it was earth hour? Well damn, I missed my chance to turn literally every electronic gadget in my house on.
Your posts always make me think you're as dumb as donald trump but then I realize that's not him in your avatar.
The whole point of this thing is just dumb. It's like having an hour of not eating from your fridge because of the limited food inside or something instead of thinking how to fill it again or how to reach another fridge. We need these resources and we can't stop our industries, so they'd better promote space reseaches maybe instead of this crap.

Turning off a few thousand watts of lights isn't going to cause much problems.
I turned off every light in my apartment to save electricity and went for a drive with my car to pass the time and waste gas. Did I do earth hour right?
wat do you live in a car
Sorry, english isn't my native language I meant fuse
This shit is dumb, cars are the reason for "earth hour" not electricity.
man i hate this shit its dumb i do the exact opposite just to spite them
