I didn't even bother to think Down syndrome was something that could be reversed.
It's the symptoms that are suppressed. The extra chromosome is still there.
Gotta learn fast? Either way if it can be adapted for humans and in turn make their stimming so much less noisy I would be eternally grateful.
Incredibly sensationalist article. It does not reverse downs syndrome. It just dampens some of the traits that develop for patient during early childhood when the brain grows the most. If I remember correctly, the prefrontal cortex pretty much stay the same as in ordinary downs syndrome, which means that patients will pretty much behave the same. It did show good improvements in hippocampal development, which will definitely assist in some cognitive tasks regarding memory and navigation.
They still need to test and make sure it doesn't make you relentlessly crave chili dogs, although I'm sure no one would mind if it worked anyways. [sp]Also, off-topic, but I think HelixSnake's brain itself has become glitched. He makes amazing glitch/scripting showcase videos, but he also frequently makes (widely regarded as) dumb posts here on facepunch. What's up with that?[/sp]
It's the symptoms that are suppressed. The extra chromosome is still there.
Wish we could detect it as a fetus and change them genetically but that shit is scifi compared to today
None of you know of the Sonic Hedgehog protein?
I'm really surprised that nobody does know about this. I seem to recall there was controversy about this kind of naming for proteins and genes and so on because it was felt to be frivolous if they could have severe clinical effects. "Your son has down syndrome because his body can't produce sonic hedgehog correctly", for example.
So what you're saying is that it's no use
i refuse to take this
So what you're saying is that it's no use

i refuse to take this
Get a load of this quote-fest going on. Ah well, might as well join in. You know what they say, the more the merrier!
I always thought sonic was the cause of Down syndrome.
Get a load of this quote-fest going on. Ah well, might as well join in. You know what they say, the more the merrier!
Great!
Can't wait for people to start saying that downs syndrome vaccines cause autism
So much for that.
Not been proven to be safe =/= been proven to be unsafe.
There's a fucking protein Called Sonic HEDGEHOG
Also, off-topic, but I think HelixSnake's brain itself has become glitched. He makes amazing glitch/scripting showcase videos, but he also frequently makes (widely regarded as) dumb posts here on facepunch. What's up with that?
It's only happened twice. Most of the posts I made since I got unbanned on Garry's birthday have gotten funny or agrees, but my stupid GTA topic threw that off.
I wonder. What sorts of bizarre shit happens when you allow creatures with this to reproduce? Sure things are suppressed in the parent(s), but they are still there.
So what you're saying is that it's no use
Pretty much. It could help develop a treatment to lessen the effects even further. Whether it is ethical to use in unborn/newborn children will cause some discussion.
This will never happen for humans.
Now they all have Up Syndrome?
Some clinicians and scientists criticize giving genes frivolous, whimsical, or quirky names, calling it inappropriate that patients with "a serious illness or disability are told that they or their child have a mutation in a gene such as sonic hedgehog."
It's just culture, only difference is that it's modern. I see no problem here.
This will never happen for humans.
Never is an almost unthinkable word in the realm of scientific, medicinal, and technological innovation and breakthrough.
wait.... is this basically a vaccine-like drug that reverses autism? [editline]6th September 2013[/editline] too bad it won't work in humans
wait.... is this basically a vaccine-like drug that reverses autism? [editline]6th September 2013[/editline] too bad it won't work in humans
Autism and down syndrome are not the same thing
So much for that.
That doesn't necessarily mean that it isn't safe for humans, just that haven't proven it safe yet!
"You're Too Slow" [sp] minded [/sp] I'm so sorry
First time I've ever been pleased to be a ninjad
Apparently, there is criticism of the name because Doctors don't want to tell parents that their child has a mutation in the sonic hedgehog gene.
