so... how long can this thing sustain flight for? it's fucking radical
I don't believe this will have trouble over water. The company says that it can hover up to 15ft. (Note this is not the limit, just the highest the pilots are willing to push it) 15 feet is will above ground effect, so it should work fine over all environments. The only possible thing I could see giving it problems is absurd amounts of fresh snow. Like 20ft + of powder. In that scenario the snow would start collapsing under the fans and your stability would suffer. Other than that this thing should have no problems.
i'm pretty sure the air blows outward
You'd probably get a bit of a vortex ring going on, a bit like with a helicopter kind of like this [editline]27th August 2012[/editline]
Well helicopters and little RC multicopters can hover over water so I don't see why not. However, it seems to skim over the ground at times on the skids, so I think if you wanted it to go over water you would have to turn up the thrust to avoid hitting the water and getting swamped. It would also blow mist everywhere.
I think the low flying with this thing was more for safety reasons for the pilot, since it's still a prototype.
Reminds me of this:
According to InnovationNewsDaily, Aerofex has no immediate plans to commercially launch a manned hover bike but instead sees the technology as a test platform for new unmanned drones.
aw they're no fun :l
My god. We actually might be able to get hover-boards by 2015 if technology keeps going at this pace.
the thing is the human race as it is right now is perfectly capable of making hoverboards, along with flying cars and whatnot. The problem is that they're impractical due to costs, needless mechanical complexity, safety issues and god knows what else As Leonardo da Vinci said, “simplicity is the ultimate sophistication” [sp]see also: “I didn’t have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead.”[/sp]
I'd love to drive this on the highway, until I get beat up and run over for spewing pebbles and rock all over everyone's vehicle.

Why is Master Chief flying that gunship?

Does it float from pressure built below the fans or can it fly higher than that?
