AMD-65's are a completely different ball game than AK-47's. You can't compare the two. It's like trying to compare an AK-47 to a vz58
The vz58 has its own receiver design and doesn't borrow much from the AK other than the gas tube driven action. You can't even take it's magazine out and use it for other rifles as I think it's fixed to the rifle. With an AMD-65 there is much more parts commonality with AKM's. Magazines can swap, the safety selectors can swap, pistol grips can swap, forward handguards, etc. So actually, no it's not.
The VZ58 has a detachable magazine, but it's shaped differently. VZ58.................................................................................................AK47
The VZ58 has a detachable magazine, but it's shaped differently.
It's different enough that it won't work in other rifles other than VZ58's. All AKM mags will fit in 7.62x39 AK patterned rifles.
Yes but the AMD-65 is ugly as fuck and looks like the retarded half cousin of the Kalashnikov, where the AK-47 is gorgeous So, completely different animal. [editline]22nd January 2015[/editline]
The VZ58 has a detachable magazine, but it's shaped differently. Look at the front lip of each mag. The AK-47's magazine has a more pronounced lip that has a cut horizontally, and the framing along the top is longer. The AMD-65 magazine has a "T" shaped lip with no cut, shorter framing around the top, a lip under the framing that the AK mags don't have, and a different locking spine on the back top of the magazine (AMD-65's is on the top and runs the entire width of the mag, AK-47's is an inch or so down and doesn't run the entire spine.)
Yes but the AMD-65 is ugly as fuck and looks like the retarded half cousin of the Kalashnikov, where the AK-47 is gorgeous So, completely different animal.
But your comparison was retarded. I mean I can get they're different, but to compare one to another rifle that the only thing they share in common is a caliber and cycling action, you haven't got much to go off of. At least with AMD-65's the parts can interchange with stock AKM's, so much so I'd say the parts commonality would be %80-%90. Just remove the ugly as fuck forward handguard with some other AK forward handguard and honestly, you'd have a bad ass side folder.

Also, since the AMD-65 lacks an upper handguard around the gas tube, its gas block does not have the hardware to hold a standard AK-47 upper handguard. You'd need to replace it with an AK-47 gas system.
The AMD-65 has a different handguard retainer than the standard AK-47 pattern rifle.
It would still hold it. Do a 5 second google search and you'll find many examples of people doing this. I'll save you some time though. This is a gas block for AMD-65's. There is no difference minus bayonet lug. The gas tube, which on normal AKM's has the upper part of the forward handguard, can be modified to accept AKM upper forward handguards. It's using a dremel tool to cut metal and you're pretty much done.
You'd need to replace it with an AK-47 gas system.
Again back to parts commonality. You can do that. Again, see above link.
But why bother For the additional price of the parts you can just buy an actual AK-47 variant and NOT have to do all that shit. You can get a (higher quality) Yugo M70 AB2 underfolder for $500. The parts kits for an AMD-65 are $420 and between $450 and $550 for a built model
So I have read the posts in this thread and I am still a bit confused, is this just a company with the rights to the Kalashnikov name in the US producing AK pattern guns under that name? Because if so there is no quality behind it. Its like the fact that "polarioid" still exists but the things they sell have no connection to the decent cameras people remember.

I wasn't arguing personally for it, I wouldn't consider it unless I wanted this rifle, I just wanted to say that you weren't correct because I knew you could have an AMD-65 with normal forward handguards. In other things, I found this all on Reddit. Kalashnikov concern is in process of opening production here in USA. If everything will go well, we will see first, made in USA Kalashnikov Concern AKs later this year!!! All calibers will be produced, including Saiga 9 in 9mm.
All my STALKER fantasies realized :v:

So you're right, absolutely nothing to guarantee quality. They don't even so much as have communication with Kalashnikov or anyone involved in making legit AKs. These guys just decided to start building their own AK knock offs and use the Kalashnikov name. If it weren't for us hating the shit out of Russian and sanctioning them a bunch they could probably sue the shit out of these guys.
Oh my god. Please please please VSS Vintorez, AS VAL, SVD/SVDK, and SV-98
Nope. Izmash is owned by Kalashnikov Concern, not the Tula Arms plant. However. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bizon_SMG http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vityaz-SN
And? They can still make copies. What're they going to do? Invade America to liberate the ethnic Russian weapons living here?
They could absolutely legally sue companies that copy shit.
They could absolutely legally sue companies that copy shit.
Actually Kalashnikov Concern gave it the green light. http://rt.com/usa/225011-kalashnikov-ak47-us-production/
Kalashnikov welcomes the initiative of US-based RWC to launch production of the famous Russian brand in America, because economic sanctions have completely closed the US market for high-demand Russian-made weapons. On Thursday, the Kalashnikov Group gave the green light to the US-based Russian Weapons Company (RWC), which had earlier announced plans to dodge anti-Russian sanctions and begin a domestic manufacture of the famous Russian brand.
Only person angry about it Yelena Kalashnikov because she feels her fathers rifle should stay with Russians instead of being circulated like it is. The parent company, though, has given their thumbs up to this plan.
