There's like a thousand polar opposite quote pairs to be found in the bible.
its almost like the book is incredibly contradictory

Frank doesn't give a shit about people's sexual preference, beliefs or fetishes. He only wants to help those in need.
And? Its supposed to be treated as absolute and unequivocal truth from start to finish.
former christian here, catholic even.
every priest i've ever talked to said that there are cultural differences that should be taken into account when reading the bible, all stuff must be interpreted and converted into something modern without losing the original intent of the texts.
there are some exceptions, such as the parts that explicitly state rules (such as ten commandments) and even then those will be contradicted by something somewhere else in the bible.
one even told me that any christian that interprets the entire bible literally and verbatim is living in the past and/or are a massive tool.
But without the threat of eternal damnation what stops anyone from sinning? It's obviously a slippery slope.

I think he's saying that bad people will still go to Hell, but good people with "bad" habits (such as homosexuals or atheists) won't.

I don't think he's saying that everyone's free to sin and be as evil as they want. It seems more like he's saying "God doesn't care what you believe in, as long as you're a good person".
What about gays?
Ephesians 2: 8-9 does not agree.
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.
this pope is currently making some good noises re: poverty, child abuse and sin, but continues the catholic tradition of making terrible noises about abortion, homosexuality, ordination of women, feminism:
"The pregnant woman doesn't carry a toothbrush in her womb, nor a tumor. Science teaches that from the moment of conception, the new being has all the genetic code. It's impressive. It's not, therefore, a religious question but clearly a moral one, based on science."

"Gay marriage is "an anthropological step backward. If there's a private union, then third parties and society aren't affected. But if they're granted marriage rights and can adopt, there could be children affected. Every person needs a masculine father and a feminine mother to help them settle their identity."

"If they're not part of it, a religious community doesn't only transform itself into a macho society, but also an austere one, hard and poorly respected. The fact that a woman can't be a priest doesn't mean they are lesser than the male. It's more — in our conception, the Virgin Mary is above the apostles."

"A philosophy of constant feminism doesn't give the woman the dignity she deserves. ... It runs the risk of becoming machismo in skirts."
and is maddeningly vague on condom use in africa - to my mind, this is the most pressing humanitarian issue the catholic church should be helping to solve.
all in all, what the pope rambles about matter less than how his attitudes affect the actions of the church. I think it's far too early to judge, but here's hoping he actually gets some reform accomplished during his lifetime
Not sure how accepted this opinion will be here, but he does have a point about proper childhood development requiring a father and mother figure.

Then he's a heretic, that isn't Catholic Doctrine.

It's the Catholic Church, if he'd been progressive by modern standards on those issues, he'd never have been elected.
What i'm hoping is that he scales back the bollocks on condoms, and opens up more about the child abuse scandals, cooperating more fully with local authorities or giving those who don't a good slapping.

I think he was saying that condoms are ok, but that instead of using them to combat AIDS people should just abstain. A lofty ideal, but people are too horny for that to happen any time soon.
Not really.
Single-parent families typically do a horrible job at raising children though.
Wait, the Pope of the Catholic fucking Church literally said that one does not even need to have any faith whatsoever to get into heaven? You only need to do good things and live a good life?
For all the conflicts over the centuries that have been fought over the role faith plays in what makes a good Christian, for the Pope to just come out and say you don't even need to believe at all is a pretty big thing.

Don't. Generalize.
It leads to nowhere

Extremists are going to have a field day with this, though.
Single-parent families typically do a horrible job at raising children though.
You specified a father and mother figure and referred to the pope's opinion, seemed fairly obvious it was a comment against gay parents rather than single parents.
Wow, I really don't know what to say about this. That's not something you'd hear from the pope very often, is it?
“Doing good” the Pope explained, is not a matter of faith: “It is a duty, it is an identity card that our Father has given to all of us, because He has made us in His image and likeness. And He does good, always.”

And? Its supposed to be treated as absolute and unequivocal truth from start to finish.
Loads of christians have rejected biblical inerrancy for centuries
Pretty soon he'll just retcon everything and turn the vatican into a casino
For every action there is an opposite reaction. Chances are there will be someone renouncing the pope and calling him a heretic lol

For sure. Fun days ahead in the Vatican.
Poperah Francis!
YOU GET REDEMPTION! YOU GET REDEMPTION! AND YOU GET REDEMPTION!
These are the words of a true mediator of peace, whom the pope at this day and age should be other than just the fatherly figure of the catholic church.
