but to say that the UK receives no benefits from being in the EU is just a lie.
This has been pointed out to him multiple times, but it just goes in one ear and out the other.
I fail to see how other Europeans being able to fish in British waters destroys British industry or ruins anything, but to say that the UK receives no benefits from being in the EU is just a lie.
It's a problem because our fishing industry has been downsized to accommodate it (So British Jobs WERE lost, so it has basically destroyed our fishing industry), and whilst ours are subject to very strict quotas enforced on them by our government, the EU doesn't make our laws about catch quotas applicable to the fishermen of other nations fishing our areas of the North Sea. This undermines our efforts to preserve our fisheries, makes our fishermen very unhappy ("We're being regulated but those damn factory ships can come in and they don't get anything like the quota we do!") and generally renders our initiatives to defend the future of the industry moot.
That's just the tip of the iceberg. My older sister and many of my best friends are Marine Biologists/Fisheries Scientists in the UK, and its a bloody mess.
I should make the point in relation to my above point - I am not anti-EU, I'm pro-EU, I just don't delude myself into thinking that its the amazing love-fest that some people make it out to be. It has serious issues that do need to be addressed for its long-term functioning, but withdrawing from it will not help.
But the euro is failing :(
We're never going t oleave the Eu, and even if we did it's not like we'd be shut out of the market.

Well of course there are problems with it, but if the problem with a particular industry is that the policies are inconsistent between member nations and the EU, then I think the solution would be to align the policies, not scrap the whole EU because of a laundry list of comparatively minor issues (compared to the incredibly powerful economic bloc that the EU is, it's the largest in the world).
