Good luck to valve getting all the game devs switch their games over to opengl/what ever the fuck else works

The advice from GPU vendors and many people in the video game industry is now "Use OpenGL.", so they already have.

That is great news then. Wont have to go with microsoft's bullshit in the future only because most of the games work with windows.
Well, it clearly says "The Steam Universe is Expanding in 2014" so i would guess some sweet new features to Steam like a overhaul and of course a SteamBox.
Honestly not expecting any games.
Also just looking at that Steam page already gives it away that its going to be some sort of Steambox.
I think it's pretty safe to say that no matter what it is, the name will be astronomy related.
Didn't they fire their hardware department forever ago when they were conceptualizing the steam box?
Why do people think it's still a thing?

Uh?
No?

Also i'd say it helps when this happens.

That didn't have anything to do with the SteamBox. Most of the people that got fired were working on AR related stuff.

Except using OpenGL is pointless if you're also targeting xbox, and the fact that OSX doesn't support OpenGL 4+ (except mavericks).
But the really big issue here, in both windows and linux/osx, is drivers. neither NVIDIA nor AMD are ever going to open-source their drivers, so even if OpenGL got really popular, you're still going to have to rely on them to implement and support those standards. Plus, of course, nvidia nor amd care if they actually have to implement all of those standards the right way because there's no driver certification for this shit in the world of linux.

The features in OpenGL 4+ are still high-end techniques, and Mavericks is not a large upgrade.

AMD and nVidia are on the OpenGL ARB, and they both have stringent tests to ensure they conform to the specification, so yeah they do actually give a shit.

Half AR other half VR, VR people are still there. Could some have switched over to the demand for a steam box, modular controller, platform for biometric feedback, or an open source input platform to compete with xinput (last one is an assumption). Something else could be announced from either valve hearing the feedback from the hardware department needing mechanical engineers or having people already hired learned the skills needed to fulfill the employees shoes.
Oh no?
my point was more of opengl being open source doesn't actually matter because of that.

if that was the case, then we wouldn't have had the issues regarding vender extensions and the wildly varying support level of intel gpus (intel is also part of the khronos group).

Intel do not make GPUs for rendering, Intel makes GPUs for making sure there's an image on the screen.

Also new content for Portal 2

It's got to be the Steambox. Big Picture mode is fixed. It now runs at ~60FPS without broken triangles, which the previous version had neither.

No joke I'd definitely buy that.
Also one of valve employees twitter channel posted those signs the day before the reveal
left for dead 3
I don't think so, judging from what the leaked changes were saying they have only recently started working on it. (they had just started changing the hitboxes over to source 2)

Linux gamers don't exist because there are no linux games,
linux games don't exist because there are no linux gamers.
Games don't get ported to linux because the market is too small,
valve uses the Steambox(and their position) to force the market growth of the linux platform.
Taking a guess based on the symbols in the circles, the first is probably the platform itself. The second is probably expansions so something like the controller. The last one is most likely about connectivity and online functionality.
This is what I think too, there is at tv screen above the three circle too.
Watch it be a netflix like service, SteamTV for the SteamBox

Many other incarnations of this have failed. Most internet speeds still aren't up for streaming games. OnLive is probably the most notable failure of this system and Sony is attempting to do it with the Ps4 (their gaikai service will be able to stream older titles but won't be available at launch)
Even then Valve's servers a little shaky (every time a major TF2 update comes out it takes ages to download and play). Granted, they do have a shitload of traffic when their servers freak out.
[editline]21st September 2013[/editline]
My guess is the 3 announcements will be an actual linux box by valve, a controller, and a chrome cast sort of device that will let you have 1 gaming computer but stream it to your TV so you don't need a million different boxes. Streaming content on the same network is way more feasible.
Though this theory doesn't seem likely with the whole o, [o ], and o + o (ie probably 2 announcements and the third is about how they work together)

I'm not saying a system like onlive, I'm saying something like netflix, where you can purchase TV shows and movies and have them streamed to your steambox

Valve isn't stupid, if they would launch the SteamBox with something Netflix like, it'd be Netflix. :v:

Valve already has a repository with some Debian packages to customize out of the box Ubuntu to work as a "SteamBox OS".
See my blogpost here.
Sorry if late, but did anyone else notice that the controller in the image is made out of two layers of cardboard paper?
Not sure what it could mean (if anything)...

The initial big picture video had something like that too iirc, it might just be nothing you know.
It's probably just the visual style they wanted to go with to present the thing from the start.
