Swilly is right in that there are bad business practices at valve, it's flaw don't make it like a normal company but below average. The only reason why it's afloat besides steam a the few (not majority) people who work hard while some take vacations like Mojang while get the credit, (it's a simplification but mostly correct, edit: some parts are great others not, you can't point fingers like microsoft and say ms hardware has a better division then xbox due to ect). I'm not going to go into the various problems, but mention such hardworking people like the ones still in hardware that weren't fired. I have to say the people I know still working at valve are hard workers and if what they've been working in secret becomes public and people are let down, then don't blame them. If there is someone to blame (besides the one or two people who got through the checks and balances and fired roughly 30 people out of spite), it's Gabe Newell for not hiring the required shoes to fill. And if you don't like the VR then also blame Michael Abrash.
Quick question, can Linux run exe files?
Quick question, can Linux run exe files?
Short answer - strictly in context with Steambox, almost definitely not. Long answer - Linux can do everything [sp]nobody guarantees you will get it working within your lifetime, tho[/sp]

[editline]22nd September 2013[/editline] You can imagine it like new console generations mostly lacking backwards compatibility these days.

PS4 can't play PS3 games nor PS2 games (unless you buy some sorta 10$ certificate for a "remade" game that you already own. Nintendo 64 can't play Super Nintendo nor NES games. Yeah, fuck consoles.
But if the Steambox will run linux doesn't it mean that you can get emulators for everything that came before the Xbox360/ps3?
I don't think there's a stable Xbox360/ps3 emulator yet but yeah, if it would, it would be hilarious. Steambox would have better backwards compatibility with old consoles than contemporary consoles :v:
I'm not really convinced that a Steam Box will be a success. PC gamers tend to play on gaming PCs or they just play on laptops that they also use for other stuff. People who don't play on PC play on consoles instead so I don't really know what kind of people they are hoping to attract to the Steam Box. However Valve are not stupid and I doubt they would go through with this if they weren't highly confident so I am kind of curious to see how it does.
Its actually a really nice looking design. The ball would probably help with that precision problem controllers have, not sure how much, but it'd probably be better than a joystick. [editline]22nd September 2013[/editline] Notice how its two sets of buttons too. No d-pad. or at least, no single piece of plastic.
A controller like this would be very interesting, as not only the ball is a huge change, but I can imagine games having their own kind of dockable controlls which are sold with the game as well.

It's a nice compromise between a stick and a mouse.
Yeah, I like the idea of the ball. It's a nice compromise between a stick and a mouse.
Certainly beats the restrictions caused by a joystick.

The three announcements will be: 1) Half 2) Life 3) Cancelled
Trying to remain optimistic, but Gabe has broken my heart one too many times. Selfish prick.
As long as PC remains a primary development source, and they continue to help PC gaming grow back to health like they have been, I don't mind whatever they want to do. There is no way I would buy a "Steam console", I am going to be upgrading my PC soon to capabilities way above any console, and have no interest in it, however I think it would be very neat to see, and although Valve aren't perfect, and they DEFINITELY are crazy, one thing they aren't is stupid. I don't really want them to become some kind of weird console dev, but I wish them all the success with this, a Linux based console/PC hybrid thingy might be interesting. Time will tell I guess, but seriously, why in the world would I want a console when I have a powerful PC? Well, the answer is I wouldn't, meaning they would have to strike a VERY difficult balance between price and power, and that's really the problem with ALL consoles, so hopefully they have put a large amount of thought into this to make it different and help to separate it from that somewhat stagnating and very slow moving market.
I hope this is Steambox with GTA V as a launch title.
I hope this is Steambox with GTA V as a launch title.
Prepare to be dissapointed
I wouldn't doubt that all of the announcements aren't directly game related, but of all things to announce if they were to announce something game related, it's probably Source 2, considering that the engine is the one thing we know exists.

We also know for a fact that exists.
Quite, I'm actually at the point where I'd actually be okay with L4D3 coming sooner rather than later, I mean, it's been almost as long as the gap between HL1 and 2 since Episode 2, I just don't care anymore.
its gmod 3
They're announcing that they are launching an Steambox, Steam Handheld and the launch titles for both are Half Life MMO. Trust me, My uncles nephew told me.
Place your bets, announcement in 3 hours!
Place your bets, announcement in 3 hours!
Controller gets announced first.
probably late but the 3 circles look like: 1. ?? 2. someone in front of a TV (steambox) 3. two people (steam family trading)
probably late but the 3 circles look like: 1. ?? 2. someone in front of a TV (steambox) 3. two people (steam family trading)
Yeah, but they've already announced Steam Family Trading, so I'm thinking this is something new... Maybe a multiplayer game? Or maybe it's two games?
Place your bets, announcement in 3 hours!
1. Steambox 2. Something universal 3. Something that we will greatly exaggerate and get wrong, as per usual
Yeah, but they've already announced Steam Family Trading, so I'm thinking this is something new... Maybe a multiplayer game? Or maybe it's two games?
Maybe the beta is starting in 2 days?
If valve were on the stock market, i'd sell some stock right about now
