• Google and Verizon in Talks on Selling Internet Priority

To the people that say this isn't going to impact much, you're right - BUT this is just the first step. This is the beginning of the end of net neutrality which is bad for all of us.
That's not technically a wide-area network. It's like saying I'm violating net neutrality rules by transferring data from one PC to another on my own network at one hundred times the speed that they could access the internet.
True but unless Cisco was lying to me certain government sectors are on the public web and are accessible by both you and me, and their packages get prioritized.
:ironicat: I was laughing at your stupidity.
you must know all about the internet my apologies :rolleye:
Boycott time bo...gents... In all seriousness, google will probably want to still reign dominant on the internet and just go "Fuck no" to verizon. Also they have nowhere else to go since their revenue mainly depends on their users. And not even a fraction depends on the nexus one and we probably won't see something like that come out of google again. All in all, they'll be screwing themselves up the ass doing this, so will verizon. Even though they can still survive if they did it.
You're underestimating how fast packages get sent across the internet. The throttle will make a difference of less than 5 seconds.
Which in the timescale of an average internet user is aproximately 5 minutes past the heat death of the universe. [editline]07:02AM[/editline] And again, if they're succesful with this it will become popular. Now imagine a site you want to access that hasn't paid any fees. It may not be the most important or popular or frequently visited site on the internet, but you need it right now. But your ISP is throttling it, their ISP is throttling it, the ISP that owns the DNS servers in the middle is throttling it, and it's grandmother is throttling it too. It'll pretty much be the equivalent of dee dee oh es

uhh...
Google has dismissed reports that the company is in talks with US telecoms operator Verizon that could bring an end to net neutrality. ... A Google spokeswoman told the Guardian: "The New York Times is quite simply wrong. We have not had any conversations with Verizon about paying for carriage of Google traffic. We remain as committed as we always have been to an open internet."
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2010/aug/05/gogle-denies-verizon-deal-net-neutrality
The deal was arrived at separate of the ongoing negotiations between the Federal Communications Commission and other Web and telecommunications giants, according to Bloomberg's anonymous sources. As part of the deal, Verizon would agree not to selectively throttle Internet traffic through its pipes. That would not, however, apply to data traveling over its wireless network for mobile phones, the report says.
http://news.cnet.com/8301-31021_3-20012703-260.html
You can do something about it: First, call FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski at 202.418.1000 and tell him not to sign on to any closed-door compromise that kills Net Neutrality (See the call script below); Second, submit a comment to the FCC urging it to stick to its original plan to protect the open Internet. I’m calling to tell Chairman Genachowski that the fate of the Internet is too important to be determined in closed-door meetings with a few massive companies. Any compromise that allows Internet providers to build toll lanes online is not REAL NET NEUTRALITY. The chairman should keep his pledge to protect the free-flowing Internet. We need REAL NET NEUTRALITY and not a weak compromise that allows big companies like AT&T to degrade or interfere with my Web experience and limit what I can do online. The FCC must reclassify broadband as a "telecommunications service," and put in place real Net Neutrality rules to keep the Internet open and free of corporate gatekeepers. Thank you.
Local ISPs are the bomb.
I don't actually give a shit. I'm wealthy enough to pay for the internet, even with the changes.

The horror, imagine a world where we had to pay to view websites and videos!
