Not in Britain. Each time you get reprimanded, the sentence gets more severe. Assault someone once, you'll probably get away with a slap on the wrists. Assault someone six times, and you're looking at jail time.
We have that in the states as well so I don't know what Xen is talking about.

It's arresting someone for exercising his opinion and saying what he did was was even worse because he's done an actual crime in the past.

To the people at the beginning of the topic: Burning a book to destroy knowledge is bad, burning a book to celebrate or test the freedoms you're given in a society is a little different, i would say. (For example i would burn a Qur'an, a poppy, a Christian bible and the homework of a thousand mormon children) Still dumb shit stole the book :v:
:v:
:v: He's saying that burning a book as a protest is different from just burning a random book.
A book is source of knowledge, no matter what it says inside. Read Fahrenheit 451
welp i guess i better start the oven those high school diaries arent going to burn themselves you know
The thing that sucks is, burn a bible and nobody gives a fuck. The book itself has become an amurican gimmick. A gag prop, if you will. Tbh, I'm waiting for some dumb redneck to burn a Qur'an and start a fire by accident. "NEWS: CONCERNED CITIZEN BURNS DOWN HOUSE, KILLS FAMILY OF FIVE IN ANGER OVER MUSLIM RADICALS"
[img_thumb]http://theinternettoday.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/scrotie.png[/img_thumb]
Probably hilarious. If you're trying to somehow get me to be hypocrite, this is one matter I won't be one about.
Alright. So he shouldn't be punished for the sheer fact that he burnt a Quran. But notably, burning poppies, an assault on something historical, is different from burning something of religious significance. I'm not sure how one man burning a stolen Quran can be considered a protest, no matter what he said. He still shouldn't be prosecuted. No matter how much speech hurts us, no matter how hateful, no matter the actions, we must not condemn someone criminally for what they say.

Unless it's extremely old / rare, or some sort of special edition, books are mass printed nowadays. Just walk to the nearest store and pick up another identical copy.
[img_thumb]http://davidickebooks.co.uk/images/uploads/david_icke_guide_300.jpg[/img_thumb]
Again, hilariously funny :v: [editline]20th April 2011[/editline]
Is it even possible to burn a book to "destroy knowledge" anymore?
Its more the intent now and days to anything else.
Wouldn't intent be 'extreme disproval'?
Wouldn't intent be 'extreme disproval'?
If you actually read the book. If you just a burn a book because of what it stands for instead of what is actually inside then it shows ignorance and an unwillingness to change your opinion or even try to challenge it.
Possibly Kirrimir is not offended by book burning because he doesn't know how to read???
What does this post say?
That kind of jail time is pretty serious. "Hate crime" is the only offense I'd agree with (other than burning a library book) but it's not like he defaced someone else's church or something.
