Do you have any arguments left that aren't disproven yet? Or should we just start to ignore you...
#3 really pissed me off, GMAN IS SUPPOSED TO BE A MYSTERY DAMMIT
It's people like this that are the reason we get shit explanations to stuff up plot holes in games. The Gman wouldn't be interesting if we knew why he was there.

1. Fact: Alyx Vance is overrated
Not just overrated, But easily one of the worst characters to ever disgrace fiction. And an insult to the gender and race she represents. I said it before, And i'll say it again: She is gaming's answer to film's Jar Jar Binks and TV's Wesley Crusher.
Sorry, we forgot that realistically proportioned women who didn't fit every mainstream stereotype were in fact offensive.
Then maybe Half Life just has a shitty story. Or maybe it's because it's FO3's gameplay that immerses me into the game, where Half Life relies on its story to do it, which still leaves bad gameplay. I do believe that being part of the world is part of FO3's game, not plot. Having the open world to explore with many different places to go is part of the game, and it's that world that is immersive. If you were to reduce FO3 to Half Life's level, which is remove all game mechanics, then yes, Fallout 3 would be a shitty game because it would be exactly like half life. But FO3 has many more things than Half Life does. Such as different weapons that actually do different things, not just shoot different bullets at different fire rates.
What do you mean?
Every here needs to stop sucking Valve's dick. Half-Life is a good game, but its not that great. Its replay value is shit I can not replay the game without getting bored and playing some other game. The gameplay gets boring after a while its always do this puzzle, then shoot some combine/marine then go to this place, repeat. I'm going to get flamed to shit by this post.
What do you mean?
The point of half-life wasn't to buy gun upgrades or grind side-quests, there wasn't ever supposed to be an RPG element to it like that. Fallout was supposed to have one from the beginning, they're two different concepts.

It would be like saying Doom 3 was shit simply because it didn't have the tactical elements of SWAT 4.

I agree
Half-Life 2 is one of the most overrated games I've ever played. Annoying characters(I hoped for Alyx Vance to die several times, I hated that bitch), bland level design(except for Ravenholm, but it made up for not being bland by simply being poorly designed), a ridiculous plot which goes on and on and on, but never starts to get interesting and one of the most downright boring protagonists in any game ever, I'll never understand why that game is so praised. I guess because it looked nice back when it was released and its physics are alright.

It because Facepunch gets horny everytime Valve says something or does something.
Hah annoying characters have you played MW2 singleplayer, "OSCAR MIKE" "COME ON WE ARE OSCAR MIKE" "RAMIREZ WE ARE OSCAR MIKE" "MOVE MOVE MOVE WE ARE OSCAR MIKE"
What a joke. I only agree with the 5th reason.
The rest of you;

2. Gordon Freeman is a shallow hipster icon with no real substance
Spot-On. The more you think about the "character" of Gordon Freeman, The less he makes any sense. Valve really expects us to believe that a scientist can turn into a Superhero, Be displaced 20 years out of his own time, And go for over a week without rest and not even make an attempt to communicate with other characters? That leaves some nasty implications of Gordon Freeman being a sociopath. Plus i hate how fanboys use him for all of their bloodthirsty, perverted wish fulfillment.
3. They will never explain G-Man
Not only is the G-Man a nice way to handwave any non-sense Valve wants to, the entire plot of Half-Life past the first one makes no sense when your entire plot hinges on your main character not communicating. I wonder how they can explain that. "Oh, the G-Man took Gordon's voice away from him"?
4. A crowbar does as much damage as a gun?
None of the weapons make any sense. The writer should have brought up the SMG Grenade Launcher though. If only for the mind-boggling way it was modeled.
5. Valve takes their sweet ass time with everything
This is the only point i partly disagree with. I think Valve has realized how deep of a hole they have dug themselves into and are letting Half-Life die quietly. At least, That what i am hoping they are doing.
So Valve. If you read this, Here's some advise: BURY THIS PIECE OF DOGSHIT FRANCHISE.
Oh god the idiocy in this post is undeniable, even Evil_Toaster would think this man is an idiot.
Naw I kinda agree with him. Alex sucks, Gordon Sucks, G-Man sucks. So much for a game being all about characters and plot and all that
hl1 was great back then but now its more like a meh. same with hl2. hl3 will be cool if it comes out sooner or later
Holy shit you guys are so stupid, this article is just a joke.
And Evil_Toaster is trolling, how can you guys not see that? Gee, half-life fanboys are worse than halo fanboys sometimes...
Okay okay, here is what Half Life is
You look at a combine (or marine, if it's HL1) you hold down click, you start shooting at them, they start shooting at you. You both take damage but since you have more health you win. Then you find health packs in oh so cleverly placed corners so you survive and repeat.
That is half life. It's a fucking FPS. You point and things and click. Where's the game?
Sure there were cool parts like the boat part or the car part or the crane part, but they were too infrequent. Especially in Half Life 1 where you do NOTHING but look at marines, hold down fire, and wait to see who dies first.
Let's take a game like Call of Duty 4, pretty much every single mission you're doing something new. While sure, most of it is still pointing and clicking, each level is doing something different so it stays fresh. Not the case with Half Life, where you fight combine in the whole fucking game.
Or maybe a game like Dead Space. The game had serious atmosphere, something people claim exists in Half Life but I don't feel it. Not like I feel it in Dead Space. Dead Space even had fucking game mechanics for god's sake. Dismemberment, inventory, all that good stuff. Half Life just has, shooting. That's really it.
Were you too busy "pointing and clicking" at the combine to notice the story at all?
In Call of Duty 4 you have exactly as much of variation as with HL2. In HL2 you have puzzle sections, you have different atmospheres in maps. Just like CoD4 has different stuff, HL2 has some too.
The only reason you made CoD4 sound better is because you just like it more. But that doesn't mean HL2 is any worse.
This thread is proof that Facepunch is 99% diehard valve fanboys.
I love valve myself, but goddamn, you guys went overboard. Incoming boxwagoning.

I pointed that out, and realized it the second I saw his post.
@Reason #3
Sure lets go ahead and explain the Gman, and take all of the mystery out of the game.
While we're at it, lets go ahead and make the Combine Overworld blow up for no reason, so we can go ahead and get the fight over with.

The story does not make the game any better.
In CoD4 you do fun things. As opposed to HL2 you do not. i.e. move cinder blocks before you can keep playing.
CoD4 is better because it really is better.

As soon as i read the first paragraph i thought, "this guy probably plays Modern warfare...". Not that that's bad, MW's pretty good, i just kinda laughed.
Anyway,Half-Life 2 ISN'T just stand there and shoot. you have to avoid fire, because usually it isnt just a single combine where you can just stand and shoot, it's at least 2-3 where you're overpowered. even if you DO end up killing them by just standing there, now you have low health. Ok, just check around a corner and heal. No, there isn't a health pack around every corner. they ARE placed obviously hidden, but not often enough that you don't die. and the game isn't the same thing throughout. The air boat part up to Black Mesa East has to be the only part where you do the same thing for a very long time, correct me if I'm wrong. Also, you don't just fight the Combine the whole time, there's Ravenholm, the Jeep part going across the beach, and...that's all i can think of. The majority of the game IS the combine, but it's supposed to be. They're the antagonists, Gordons the protagonist. Plus, there are different types of combine, there are the striders, and lot more that make it more than just "combine the whole fucking game".

You just describing standing and shooting in many different ways. Or moving and shooting, but they might as well be the same.
What I'm trying to say is that there is nothing great about HL2's gameplay. There's nothing that makes it special. It is completely generic combat with nothing else. And that makes it boring.
[editline]07:22PM[/editline]
Or rather, standing and shooting many other things, not many different ways.
4. A crowbar does as much damage as a gun?
Yeah, and so does a knife in every other FPS.
