No, it sucks as a whole.

See there you go again, stating your opinion as facts. A guy even gave you a huge rant about why exactly it is good and your only response was "We're talking about a game." If you simply said that you think the game is bad I'd respect your opinion but what you're doing is obviously trolling.

As mentioned previously, the story plays a big part, the atmosphere plays a big part, you go to places like Ravenholm and the coast, the characters play a huge role, there's the gravity gun, for its time it had amazing physics. You're comparing it to Call of Duty 4 and saying that was far more diverse, which is simply wrong, I'm sorry but that's just not right at all.
You're also still saying that it's bad, as if that's a fact, when it's just your opinion. If you'd said "I don't like Half-Life 2 very much and here's why" you wouldn't recieve such negative feedback. Plus the reasons you don't like it don't make much sense, at least not to me or the others, but the thing that gets me is you stating it like a fact.
[editline]10:08PM[/editline]
I pretty much did exactly what I didn't like you for doing, I'll correct myself. In Call of Duty 4, in my opinion, there's more of this "only ever pointing and clicking" than there is in Half-Life 2, and far less diversity in how you do it. My apologies for the hypocrisy.

Okay I don't like Half-Life 2 and here's why.
The combat is the most basic gunplay in any game ever. You literally just point at a dude and shoot. And they shoot back, and one of you dies. Imagine running in a field of red circles and you have to click on them before time runs out and you die. That's basically Half Life. You have different guns but they all shoot the same particle and only do different amounts of damage at different fire rates. The only 'different' weapon is the gravity gun which is worthless compared to a gun because using it requires a prop and once you use you can't even see in front of you anymore since it's in front of your face. With guns there's ammo everywhere so there's never a problem. With guns simply being more effective there's no reason to use the gravity gun.
All the physics puzzles are stupid. They stop whatever action there is and force you to do work. WORK. Move all the cinder blocks to this spot, move the washing machine into this platform etc. It's not fun. Sure there's physics, yes it's good physics, yes it was impressive in 04 but it's not fun. It's just there to look at.
Levels are dumb. There's almost no reason to explore. You're usually set on a straight path, however wide the path is, and if you ever need health or ammo you just stop and turn left or right. The only interesting things happen when you're not shooting. Be it in a boat, car or crane.
All the enemies are basically the same. The only differences being if they have guns or not. Combine shoot at you from afar, and antilons, zombies, whatever hit you up close. Big deal.
The ending is stupid. Something explodes and then gman comes out and's like blarah I get off walk away and then it's over. That's like the least satisfying ending ever.
If you want to you can add "I think" at the start of each paragraph but that'd be stupid.
I don't really mind the puzzles, they take a break from the boring generic gunplay.
I can understand why you dislike the game, but how the hell did you come across this site if you don't like the game?
Hard difficultly wasn't really hard, it took longer to kill them, but still, there is dumbAI.

Because I liked Gmod

What you're saying about the guns is basically how all FPS are, it's very hard to find a FPS where you don't simply use different weapons that shoot bullets. The thing about a field doesn't really add up since the maps aren't just one big area after the next.
The physics puzzles are there to make you stop and think so you'll be prepped for more action afterwards, so it's not constant shooting, which you're complaining about. Apparently that didn't work for you but it did for me and many others.
The levels are linear, like in so many other games.
The ending, well that's your opinion I guess.
You know if I was as dumb as evil_toaster I'd be able to make any game sound bad.
Fortunately I'm not as dumb as him.
What you're saying about the guns is basically how all FPS are, it's very hard to find a FPS where you don't simply use different weapons that shoot bullets.
This is why so many FPS's are bad. Just because almost all FPS's are like this doesn't mean they're good because of it.

I'm talking about things fun and not fun. And doing lame ass physics puzzles to not make me more prepared for another point and click fight

It's a skill, not a perk.

That's why you THINK so many FPS are bad.
Doing physics puzzles wasn't necessarily meant to be all that fun, it was just meant to be a break from the constant shooting, which you complained about.
That's why you THINK so many FPS are bad.
So you want all FPS's to be controlled on-rail shooters where you point at the same enemy for 10 hours? That doesn't sound fun at all.
If it's not fun why is it in the game.

Nope, I never said I want them all to be that. But it isn't any worse than any other FPS, in fact, I think it does a much better job of it.
I never said it isn't fun, I said it wasn't mean to be "all that fun", and like I said, it's there to let you take a little break from the shooting, so you'll be pumped to do it again. Most games have some function that isn't all that fun but some form of it is necessary.
But it isn't any worse than any other FPS, in fact, I think it does a much better job of it.
A better job of being boring and generic?

If doing things in a game that aren't fun is necessary then there is something very wrong with the game.

Nope, a better job of being fun, like I said.
Not really, as an excellent example, Half-Life 2 is a very good game, and it had physics puzzles that weren't explodingly fun. Personally though, I found them enjoyable.

I didn't find it great compared to other FPS's. Sure, it had a lot of effort and it didn't completely suck, but the game was just "meh" to me, nothing special about it besides it's mods and physics.

If you think so.
If you think so.
I guess that happens if several people set high standards for it.
If you think so.
What I'm trying to understand is why everyone else thinks otherwise. Why do people like Half Life? Tell me please
I guess that happens if several people set high standards for it.
It depends really. The only reason I'm arguing with Evil_toaster is because he's constantly been saying that the game is crap and refusing to accept that others may like it.
It depends really. The only reason I'm arguing with Evil_toaster is because he's constantly been saying that the game is crap and refusing to accept that others may like it.
Because I don't understand why
What I'm trying to understand is why everyone else thinks otherwise. Why do people like Half Life? Tell me please
Because they think it's a fun game. Because they think the game mechanics are great, like I do, and they enjoy the atmosphere, music(in my case at least), the story, the characters. We've been through this.
[editline]10:54PM[/editline]
Personally I don't really understand why you dislike it so much. Sure you've given me reasons but I completely disagree. I'm fine with you not liking it but simply stating that it sucks is almost an insult to us who think otherwise.

What game mechanics? I see none. There is only moving and shooting and that comes with the genre.
Atmosphere, music, story and characters are not game mechanics.

I don't see the point in putting that on your profile page but okay.
What game mechanics? Really? Okay, you're clearly not going to even try to be sensible so I'm just going to stop now.

But for me, it was Tuesday.

"That guy doesn't like Half-Life, he must be trolling!"
Is it that hard to just accept other people's opinions without going into a fanboyish fit?

No, it's the style of his posting that screams "troll".
