People don't play Half-Life games solely for the gameplay. They'd get bored and give up. Instead, they get immersed in the story instead of the psuedo-interesting gameplay elements. You're right, Half-Life was not the best game in the universe, but it kept you interested. People enjoy Half-Life 2 because of the characters, not just shooting things, which some enjoy doing too.
The thing about FPS games today is that they really emphasize on the Shooter part of the genre name. If you aren't shooting at something you're preparing to shoot at something 24-7, and Half-Life was one of the games that broke that genre. You don't even get a gun in Half-Life until almost half an hour in if you're paying attention and don't kill the first Barney you find.

i agree the game gets boring after a while but it doesnt mean you win. you get nothing. so you loose. i stop playing games i beat but i havent beat hl2 yet. im on the last level anyways.

First off, the game doesn't suck. If you strip away the characterization, the plot, the setting, and the diverse weaponry, then yes, it's a bone dry FPS.
