people want to much from a game. it isnt just a click and drag. it takes almost 4 years for a game to come out perfectly. and you just dont give a shit for those hard workers
So because they worked hard on the game it's good? I don't care if they make the most impressive looking and realistic game ever. If it's not fun, it's not worth playing.
And before anyone says anything, Crysis was a great game. Better than HL2 by far.
I'm sure back in the day people were so impressed by realistic physics in video games that they forgot the game was bad. I can understand that. But think about it. You are grabbing cinder blocks, putting them on a platform, and then advancing. Where's the game in that? That's work. That is the definition of work. Most of these physics type puzzles were the lower points of the game for this reason.
You sir are obviously under the age of 20. I remember back when videogames BARELY EVEN EXISTED, and the only way you could play them is if you bought a 600 dollar console and then a 50 dollar joystick controller with one button, and even then most of what you could do was bounce a tiny four pixel ball across the screen to another paddle, which would then hit it back, and repeat ad nauseum.
Nowadays we can do shit like we can do in Garry's Mod, toss shit up and watch shit come falling back down and--

why in the fuck am i even arguing with this idiot
You've gotten answers, that you abruptly disagree with. It's obvious we can't change your mind since you don't believe in opinions, so please shut up and leave.
"Because it's fun" is not an answer.

Crysis WAS a good game, gameplay was fun, HL2 might not have as amazing gameplay, but the story and stuff which you seem to be able to ignore, drags it to beat Crysis by far.
...in my opinion
You argue because you think your opinion is better than my opinion. That's the only reason anyone ever argues.
"Because it's fun" is not an answer.
What is there to possibly say
Now please just accept that nobody will ever be right and go the fuck away.

This doesn't make Half Life 2 a good game.
goddamn AUTOMERGE

Could be.
Are you fucking kidding me? The video game market was full of Quake clones in 90s. Half-Life was the FPS I have ever played in 90s, and it's still a great game. Look at Valve's rivals today. They're either dead, or making lame games for handheld consoles.

ask your mom or dad or a old guy what they used to play back then. a bat and a ball thats it. we didnt here em complain. tell me. if there were no games or anything now what would you whine about. and yes hard work counts. it makes it replayable. Cough NASCAR THUNDER Cough its replayable and non boring
This doesn't make Half Life 2 a good game.
You're right a lot of stuff makes it a good game. But you're a fucking idiot and will deny that it's a good game with all your heart, you don't seem to understand the concept of opinion. Just leave, your trolling is not appreciated at all, and if you aren't trolling may got have mercy on your retarded mental capacity.
This doesn't make Half Life 2 a good game.
umm how does something not close to hl2 make hl2 a Bad Game. your a troll
TheSpy, I'm sorry but you're not really good at this arguing thing, well maybe I'm not either, but you're just doing awful.

Yep valve are the undisputed leader of the FPS genre
I mean who cares about infinity ward or bungie I mean they're nothing
Your reason for not liking Half-Life 2 is not a reason. It's an excuse. "It's boring" TO YOU. "It's generic" TO YOU. YOU THINK "it's dumb". And no matter how many times I say it, YOU will never accept this. YOU will never say your opinion is your opinion. YOU will always firmly believe your opinion is fact, and there is nothing I can do about it.

I'm sure by the standards of the 90's Half Life was great. But as learn more and more about games they just get better.
It's like if, uhh, say someone had a recipe for the best ramen ever in the 90s. It might be the best ramen you at at the time. But now 20 years later someone makes super ramen but now there's no need for normal old ramen because we became better at making ramen. And yes, games today may become the old ramen of tomorrow, but some games can pass the test of time to some degree. Half life is not one of these games.
And don't diss the handheld consoles. Play some Clash of Heroes some times.

Valve came first, Valve encouraged innovation, so yeah, they're nothing.

Sometimes you have to enjoy the simple things in life.
and let me get off topic here. when i play a game i like it and find ways to entertain myself until i get bored of it and leave it to dust. there are many ways to get entertained in hl2 now that we got gmod. its funny that you never mentioned with gmod playing hl2 will be funnier and more entertaining. its better then throwing rocks at water hoping for them to skip. and why sont you mention any ps3 360 or wii games. if you were trapped in a room with nothing else to do but play hl2 or skip rocks what would you choose. i would pick hl2
But you're a fucking idiot and will deny that it's a good game with all your heart, you don't seem to understand the concept of opinion.
I'm gonna quote this and show this to everyone. I'm going to put this on my Steam Profile even.
Okay. Doesn't make the game better or worse though.
Okay asshole, get something through your head. The things you're complaining about are the things that MAKE it A FIRST PERSON SHOOTER.
Half Life 2 changed the game when it came to shooters, you never had real-time physics before, you never had character body and facial animation detailed enough to create a truly CHARACTER-BASED story for a shooter. Even Bioshock, the first and EVEN most of the second, never applied facial animation. Half your interaction was with a radio telling you what to do or laughing at you in a corner. Not dissing Bioshock of course, both games were fantastic in terms of gameplay and narrative, but even a 2007 game wasn't able to provide a degree of character empathy as good as a game released in 2004.
On top of all that, Half Life 2 provided the fucking Gravity Gun. Oh, it's nothing but shooting combine all day? What about the puzzles? Challenging and out-of-the-box enough to break up the shoot-em-up segments, they were the first of their KIND because again, NO GAME HAD TRUE REAL-TIME PHYSICS BEFORE!
And "just shooting Combine" is bullshit. Half Life has a Hell of a lot more variety in enemy-type than either Bioshock or Modern Warfare, especially the latter. You employ different tactics on the fly when dealing with soldiers, antlions, zombies, guardians and striders, to name a FEW.
And your wholesale dismissal of the narrative elements of the Half Life Universe is staggeringly stupid. This is the same as the TV Tropes shit that's turning every douchebag into a "world-weary" bitter culture veteran. Half Life 2 and it's parts meshed together to create a world with just as rich and telling of a story as Bioshock did. Mostly in how the story wasn't TOLD to you, it was SHOWN to you. You were never TOLD what happened to Ravenholm, or those old abandoned homes on the shore, you played the detective if you were keen enough, seeing the little headcrab canisters in the roof and the bodies by the fire, the broken wall and the lone poison zombie wandering around upstairs. It all tells a story, and every part of Half Life 2 has its tale.
Yes, gameplay is important for a game, and for a 2004 game, Half Life 2 was fucking KING of the FPS genre. Yes, it's fallen a little behind, because technology has improved around it, but you forget that incredible games like the Left 4 Dead series still use the Source engine to great effect.
You call Half Life 2 a horrible game? I let my buddy come play it for the first time on my computer a few months back, had a marathon run. This guy has played plenty of stuff, yet not as familiar with Valve. He couldn't get enough, in 2009, with a 2004 game with dated graphics. He was having FUN, glued to the seat. You don't have fun in a game and refuse to hit pause if the gameplay is bland. You can't see the forest for the trees, can you? Face it:
Valve came first, Valve encouraged innovation, so yeah, they're nothing.
Yep because ID software never existed and they never make games anymore
also gearbox have totally stopped making shooters after brothers in arms I mean what are the chances they're gonna make a rpg and a fps hybrid
Face it valve are not the undisputed kings of FPS they have rivals many of them more popular and successful
I'm gonna quote this and show this to everyone. I'm going to put this on my Steam Profile even.
It'll only be ridiculous out of context, therefore I don't care.

Valve started INNOVATION
ID started FPS
difference
Welp, I think J-Dude just completely broke any argument Evil_Toaster might have had left.
answer this toaster. if you were stuck in a room and you could only do 2 things what would you pick. playing hl2. or grabing the gun on the table and shooting yourself. tell me what would you pick
