Not all women are that tall. Seems a little discriminatory to rule out shorter women from action roles.
??? Is it discriminatory to not cast a skinny pale nerd as a terminator???
I dunno, she seems fine for the role.
A little bit of makeup magic to make her look more pouty and voilà.
Why not just cast Camilla Luddington?
Usually I'm against characters played in LA by their VA since they don't match the look but Camilla is an actress and they literally used her face for the game
Oh, she was the robot girl from Ex Machina.
Well, she's certainly pretty, but I don't really see her as Lara Croft though, personally. I've been surprised before, though, I'd have to see her in-costume first.

Her Jawline is more prominent while Lara's isn't all that much, thats my only complaint that I have.

Based on Ex Machina it seems like that can be hidden with just camera angles, if necessary.
Face wise there's a bunch of female actors who could do the job, Emilia Clark, Emma Watson. I mean if it's an origin story she would not be a battle hardened warrior so i can see them both being believable action wise too (not so much watson).
But my personal choice would be Emily Blunt, edge of Tomorrow being the major influence on my choice.
That being said i got no problems with AVA other than her not really being a household name yet.
Why are all the new "action" actresses so damn tiny ? The one from Rogue one is just 159 cm tall and this one is 166 cm. It's not like Tom Cruise will be in the movie too. Look at Sigourney Weaver, 182 cm tall strong woman, you know you can't mess with her. These just look like kids in a movie.
Afaik Tomb Raider (2012? 2013?) starred Lara Croft as barely out of her teens.

She's 21 in the 2013 reboot.
Lara doesn't strike me as all that tall to begin with. Compared to other characters in the game, Lara looks like she's 5'5"-5'7". The only thing that might be weird is if she doesn't put on some muscle; Lara does an awful lot of climbing around.

IP movies really care about protecting investments now. Camilla Luddington was good in the Tomb Raider games but outside that she's known for playing Kate Middleton in a lifetime made for TV movie and a late series regular on Grey's anatomy
Vikander might not be a huge name, but she's been in commercially successful and critically acclaimed movies so she's a more safe bet for them
Should've been Daisy Ridley.
She was good in Star Wars, but I personally don't think she's the best option for Croft.
From what I seen of Alicia, it's possible she could pull it off.
On another note:
How have video game movies been doing as of late? Are the actors careers hurt after the movies?
I think Fassbender in AC is the next game movie to come out if I'm not mistaken.
how about not making a tomb raider movie in the first place. and returning the old roots with the games instead of this poorly written ass we get nowadays
Feels like a waste of her talent.
Good choice, I'd say. I expect some commitment on her part, and hope to see that she trains and bulks up enough to look like she could climb the Rockies blindfolded without breaking a sweat - what I mean is, *sell* me on the idea that you definitely look like Lara Croft, similar to Tom Cruise in M:I III.

A chick with the body of a ballet dancer dressed up as a hardened outdoor explorer and rock climber would have an impact on anyone's suspension to disbelief. You can't expect people to believe that a scrawny-looking girl has that kind of strength and stamina.

My perfect cast for Lara would have been Emily Blunt. She would absolutely own the role, but alas, that didn't happen.

She has the body of a 10-year-old, that'd be awful.
