I was thinking that too, it's so obvious when a guy is just carrying around hundreds in his wallet like they're nothing
I even doubt the very rich carry hundreds like that when they could pay with credit or debit (both of which are a lot more convenient and easy for a rich person to pay off)
What happens if you receive counterfeit bills in a legitimate transaction, fail to realize they're fake, then attempt to use them? Surely there's been cases of innocent people being charged with use of counterfeit money?
The Secret Service once came to my old high school after some moron paid for his school lunch with a counterfeit $20.
He was arrested. And charged with a federal crime. Over a $2 school lunch that tastes like shit anyway.
I want to know how the student got the plates.

Probably, but I bet he will be questioned thoroughly and they'll take it from there. He was a student walking around with multiple counterfeit $100 bills though. The article says that he paid for the Xbox with them then when they arrested him they also seized more fake $100 bills.
He'll probably be charged for them if he doesnt have a good enough excuse for having them, and even if he has an excuse for walking around with fake $100 bills, they probably wont believe it unless he can actually help them trace them back to where they came from.

Most businesses keep a highlighter that checks the legitimacy of bills by a register, ideally, they are supposed to be used anytime big bills are involved, or if there is any uncertainty regarding validity. Not sure what would happen if a faulty bill was mistakenly accepted, but I imagine they will just attempt to trace it, because simply using a false bill by mistake isn't your fault.

Cafeteria lunch is serious business as well
What happens if you use fake money but didn't know it was fake
Surely the stuff can stay in circulation for quite some time

The Secret Service will just ask you how you got the money and start playing connect the dots from that point on. My econ teacher unknowingly used a faked 20 and the Secret Service called him about it.
They'll eventually find their way to a bank. That's when they will start sorting out the counterfeits before they transfer the cash to the fed.

book him anyway.
his fault for not carrying an official US Treasury blacklight and oil testing kit.

Yeah, they'll probably charge him for it and threaten him until he cooperates and does whatever they want.

Depends, like I said before he was walking around with multiple fake $100 bills, so he most likely knew they were fake. There are hundreds of thousands of fake notes in circulation in the UK, but most shops just check them and turn them away.
1 in 30 pound coins are fake here too, thats why they are considering scrapping them all and redoing them. Most people have some in their purse/wallet, hell, I just had a look and theres one obvious one on my desk (No writing or markings around the edge, completely wrong picture and inscription for the date marked on the coin). Nobody checks them though, I guess it doesnt matter a great deal because they have just become part of the normal currency.
the strange thing is that i could've actually used counterfeit money and not known about it
What happens if you receive counterfeit bills in a legitimate transaction, fail to realize they're fake, then attempt to use them? Surely there's been cases of innocent people being charged with use of counterfeit money?
In this country, when people who counterfeit bills need to get rid of the money to avoid being caught, usually go to the central flea market and go around looking for poor teens and give them the money for them to spend it in there. And as the people who have stores and business in there are all pretty informal and don't have measures to fight this they get screwed.

Nothing really, in my case they just got my name and some basic info, asked me a few questions, where I got it from, and that's it. Now if my name comes up again.. And not to mention I only had a $10, but I'm sure the same principal would apply (I didn't counterfeit it mind you, I was the innocent guy you were referring to). I mean clearly this guy was in on it since he returned it the next fucking day. He's simply an amateur with access to professional tools.

umm
how the fuck would he have known it was counterfeit? Unless he did it himself and it was clear...
the strange thing is that i could've actually used counterfeit money and not known about it
How did you realize that it was counterfeit?
I remember that at the age of 5 i tried to pay with money scanned and printed in black&white...
If he were smart he would of payed in a random of assortment of large and small bills, like one $100 bill a few 20's, 10s, 1s, etc
If he was REALLY smart he wouldn't have made any $100 bills to begin with.
I really don't understand why people even bother counterfeiting $100 bills, its like they WANT to get caught.
I'm not condoning counterfeiting! I just always wondered : why people who counterfeit money always go for $100 bills and not something smaller.
What a waste of fake money.

The people accept it, and I think it is technically real currency.
[editline]30th December 2011[/editline]
Also couldn't you pay in bottle caps as long as the person accepts it?

But he was making it with a real American printer, doesn't that make it not counterfeit?
